Dowe of 412 Front street, McHenry, was among the squad leaders who completed recruit training, Sept. 8, at the Naval Training center, Great Lakes. Squad leaders are selected on the basis of high initiative, outs t a n d i n g l e a d e r s h i p a b i l i t y , military bearing, and because they best express a high example to their fellow recruits. Those selected for squad leader posts serve in a supervisory capacity and assist in training the company. They are directly responsible to the company commander for the conduct of the men in the squad. Richard E. Schafer, machinist's mate second class, t.USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Schafer of 2916 North Riverside drive, McHenry, is serving aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Koel, which arrived in San Diego, Calif., on Sept. 11. It marked the first time the Navy's newest missile- equipped destroyer entered her homeport. The ship was built at Bay City, Mich., and commissioned into the Navy at Boston, Mass., on June 16. She sailed to the West Coast via the Panama Canal. The Hoel's first rescue mission was made during the cruise. She was dispatched to find a drifting small boat. Her crew spotted the craft at 3 a.m., 100 miles from Colon, Panama. The sailboat, with one man aboard, had been adrift for 10 days after it had become becalmed on the way from London, England, to Sydney, Australia. The Hoel towed the sailboat into Colon and continued on to San Diego. WORMS, GERMANY -- Albertus F. Van Berkum, whose sister, Mrs. Dina Van Schyndel, lives on Route 1, Spring Art On Exhibit Rudi J, Phote Artist Marilyn Bacon of Ringwood is shown sitting beneath two of her paintings, part of a large collection on display this month in the middle gallery of Riccardo's Restaurant and Gallery in Chicago. A visitor to McHenry admired some of Mrs. Bacon's paintings which hang in local business places, and on returning to Chicago recommended that the gallery owner invite her to exhibit. It is a distinct honor for the local artist, whose paintings have been popular at the local art fair each year. At left, in back of Mrs. Bacon, is a portrait of Atty. Robert Stueben of McHenry, and at .the right is a painting she calls "Pensive." Grove, was promoted to private first class Sept. 15 in Germany, where he is serving with the 48th Infantry. Van Berkum, a rifleman in the infantry's Company B in Worms, entered the Army in December, 1961, and received basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He arrived over* seas last June. The 20-year-old soldier was graduated from high school in Netherlands.
