The commission is the official agency established by the Illinois legislature to develop plans for solving critical areawide problems in an area comprising Cook, Dui:a;;e, Kan.?, Lake, Mcilcnry and Will counties. Members of the nineteen member commission are appointed by the governor of lilinois, the rruy<;r of Chicago, 'and t'^e hoard chairmen of the six counties. As part of Us expanded work program for 1'.)c3 the commission proposes to make a number of sorrinl studies needed to complete the comprehensive plan, including, studies of municipal costs and revenues, land use data, sewerage and w a t e r d i s t r i b u t i o n s y s t e m s , ^ suburban industrial and commercial smiclures, suburban housing quality, and school'locations and needs. The comprehensive plan is to include « land use and development plan a circulation nk'n covering all, modes of transportation: a plan for use and management of water resources, and an economic devel opment program. 4 In approving the 1963 work program the Commission asked its staff to nlace special emphasis on initiating a metropolitan area transportation study so 'r t-iri of the comprehensive plan, and on working with state and local governments in developine a civil defense plan for the Chicago area. To finance program, the Planning commis- . ".-.-voved a budgetary goal of $555,000 for 1963. This com pares with estimated expenditures of $388,000 in 1962 SUMMER RESIDENT CHOSEN FOR WEST POINT CONFERENCE Karl R. Barnickol of 5810 N. Maplewood, Chicago, a summer resident of Woodlawn Park, McHenry, and a political science major at Johns Hopkins university in Baltimore, Md., is among the over 200 students from various colleges and universities across the nation who will take part in the fourteenth annual student conference on United States Affairs at the United States Military Academy, West Point, 1'rom Dec. 5-8. Students will discuss political, military and economic aspects if the Atlantic Community and its development. Keynote speaker is Dean Acheson, ex-Secretary of State and author, now practicing law !n Washington, D. C. Banquet pcaker will be His Royal Highness. Prince Bernhard of he Netherlands. A member of the political science honorary fraternity and dormitory student council, Barnickol is the recipient of an alumni association scholarship. Barnickol's mother is the former Rosalie Stilling of McHenry. , Howard V. Phalin, executive vice-president of the Field Enterprises Education corporation, Chicago, formerly of McHenry has been appointed to the advisory council for the Liberal and Fine Arts at the University of Notre Dame. His appointment was announced by Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., University president. The Council is composed of twenty-eight leaders n business, the professions and .he arts who meet on the campus semi-annually to consult with officials of Notre Dame and its College of Arts and Letters. Phalin has been associated with Field Enterprises since 1933 and became executive vice-president in 1953. He is a 1928 graduate of Notre Dame's college of business administration and was vice-president of his class. Phalin, whose home is in Winnetka, was a Navy lieutenant commander in the Pacific during World War II. He is a member of the Chicago Athletic association and the Merchants and Manufacturers club. Mr. Phalin, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Phalin, was born and received his early education in McHenry. At present, two students at Notre Dame, one from McHenry high school and the other from Marian Central, are attending on scholarships provided by him. DCCW DEANERY PRFSENTS PROGRAM KT ST. JOSEPH'S McHenry Deanery Council of Catholic Women will hold an open meeting on Wednesday. Dec. 12, at St. Joseph's parish hall, Richmond. Bene diction in church will precede the meeting at 7:45 p.m. Rev. Frank Miller is host pastor. Presiding will be newly elected president, Mrs. James Mclntes, of Richmond. Preparations are being made for a most interesting program. A skit "Four Christians in a Changing World," will be presented. Those participating are Mrs. Maurice Clark, ^ Mrs. Charles C u d a. Mrs. Leonard Pawlikowski and Mrs. Clarence Niesen. All ladies of McHenry deanery are urged to attend this meeting. HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS CHARTER GRANTED A charter has been issued by the state of Illinois to Northern Illinois Savings and Loan association in Cary. Roy Brunette, president and manager director, is also one of the owners of the McHenry Glass Co., at 3322 Elm street, McHenry. CONSTRUCT NEW BUILDING Confirmation of Modine Manufacturing company plans to construct a manufacturing and warehousing facility in Virginia was revealed Nov. 28 in a joint announcement made in Richmond by Governor Albertis S. Harrison, Jr., jyjtfl A. G. Dixon, president of ""Modine. According to the announcament, Modine will construct approximately 100,000 square feet of plant and factory office space in the Shenandoah Valley community of Buena Vista. Modine presently employs about 2,000 people nationally and has manufacturing facilities in Indiana (LaPorte), Kentucky (PuducahV, California (Whittier), and Illinois (McHenry) in addition to Wis- Pagt.Flve about 250 salaried personnel at corporate headquarters in Racine concerned with the corporate functions of administration, engineering, research and development, sales, accounting and purchasing OPEN DRIVE FOR COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL MEMBERS Mobile Unit Visits County The Mobile x-ray unit makes its third visit to Woodstock on Friday. Dec. 7. It will be in operation from 1 to 4:30 and 5 to 8:30 p.m., at the south side of the court hoUse. Mrs. Claribel H. Naylor, R. N., executive director of the McHenry County Tuberculosis association, which finances the x-ray program, in making the announcement, said "The response of our people to this new service has been good. We will not have the mobile unit here in January, so we are urging all who have been planning to come in for an x-ray to do so Friday." McHenry county citizens have an opportunity to invest in their community's future with this week's announcement of the annual membership drive by the Memorial Hospital for McHenry County association. The membership investment is used to support the hospital's broad program of projects which benefit patients, explained Leo Krumme, Crystal Lake, secretary of the association. The association is a nonprofit organization and is the membership group which governs the activities of the county- wide hospital. Membership also entitles members to attend the annual meeting dinner without additional charge. The 1963 annual meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 22, Krumme added.
