From some bouts we have watched, 'twould appear the participants were way ahead of legislation. Since that now famous Liston- Patterson farce, boxing has taken Its lumps/ The paying dlrtomers are the ones who took the blows in that so called fight. The> took it smack dab in the rib area or hip region -- depending on where they carried their billfolds. Take legalized boxing out of the state and what about the kind that isn't legal? Now, we know it isn't legal for baseball players to square off and start punching, but let tempers wear thin and baseball turns to boxing. You know all about illegal u?e of the hands in football, but illegal use of the fists is soon forgott<r when things get out of hand. Many a basketball player has turned boxer without notice when he feols an opjiorient has done him wrong. . It is just that this winter has made us tired. What ever happened to Hadacol ? ^Jfurricane On Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 22 and 23, Marian held its annual retreat. The retreat master was Father Lawrence London, the Chaplain at St. Anthony's hospital in Rockford. The students attended Mass in a body in the gymnasium these two days. The Marian Fathers Club will hold its third annual Father- Daughter Banquet Sunday, Jan. 27, at 6:30 p.m. Art Hodes, a famous jazz pianist will be the speaker at the banquet Mr. Hodes, who calls himself "The Dean of Dixie" and is the greatest, white jazz pianist in the United States, and has lectured at Harvard, Yale and other high academic institutions. Mr. Hodes is also a recording artist and has made numerous appearances on radio and TV. The chairman of the banquet is Robert Kordenbrock Of Crystal Lake. The Junior class will have their class rings blessed Feb. 1 by Monsignor Joseph Healey of Harvard. Monsignor Healey recently received . this new honor of Monsignor and is the newly appointed Dean of the McHenry Deanery. The student body will give the Monsignor a gift in honor of his new appointment. Six members of the Marian debate club will debate at Marian against Saint Francis of Wheaton, Tuesday, Jan. 22. It will be one round after school. The faculty beat the varsity club 53-38 last Thursday in a real rough and tumble game. NORTH SllHKBAN A tour through some small towns to a larger city this week made us thankful for McHenry's snow removal crew. The larger city had the snow pushed to the curb and around the parking meters. On one side street we $ere glad to have snow tires. •.* Sat with Sib Whiting, one of McHenry's basketball stars of another era, during the last half of the Barrington game. Of course, we went over the years and discussed how the game has changed. Naturally we like some parts of the pld game better. Somebody walked off with our mbbers at that game. We j[oked about leaving them in the hail when we entered the gym. This wasn't as bad as the time we lost a iigw hat >cars ago in the old gym. Had to tie a senrf over our bald head that night. John Rourke, hustling Warrior back court man, was the game's outstanding performer as he alertly picked off passe; by the Broncos and added 2C points to the McHenry cause Lloyd Smith also did a fine job in the losing effort. Barrington jumped off ir front as they raced to an 18-1C first quarter advantage. Fred Kusch, 67" McHenry center, got in foul trouble early in the second period aiu! was forced to the bench aftei he picked up his third persoina' after 2 minutes. With Kusch out of the line-up the Bronco? had an easier job of controllinp the boards, and this helped them to build up a 36-26 halftime lead. The Warriors feil back 2 more points during the third stanza as the Broncos presented a well balanced attack during the period with four men denting the scoring column. The Warriors came back gamely in the fourth quarter but the rally fell short by five points. Jahnke led the Bronco attack with 17 points followed by Gary Showers with 16, while Graver and Jusits split 24 between them. In the preliminary game, the Barrington underclassmen were the first team to keep the McHenry soph point total below 50 points as they defeated the Orange and Black soph's 47-42. Regardless of weather conditions, the McHenry Sportsmen's Club will hold its monthly prize trap shoot Sunday January 27 commencing at 10 a.m. on the club grounds near Pistakee Lake.
