Dember, electronics technician third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Dember of 114 Morningside, McHenry, is serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier I'SS Ranger,, which recently visited Cubi Republic of the Philippines. The Ranger visited the Naval Air station Jan. 6, during her current Far-Eastern cruise as part of the Seventh Fleet. This is the super-carrier's fourth tour of duty in the Western Pacific. Earlier in her current cruise, the Ranger visited Yokosuka, Japan. William H Hansen, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry R. Hansen of 3719 Freund ave., McHenry, is undergoing nine weeks of basic recruit training at the Naval Trainingcenter, Great Lakes. Foerster, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer C. Foerster of 3014 W. Mourine lane, McHenry, completed ten weeks of basic training at th U.S. Naval training center, Bainbridge, Md., and was graduated during military reivew on Jan. 18. The local WAVE, a former McHenry high school student; will spend a fourteen-day leave with her family before reporting to Bainbridge for general duty administration. Seaman Apprentice Foerster received instruction in naval orientation, naval history, citizenship and current , event.', naval ships, aircraft and armament, Navy jobs and training, etc. The McHenry WAVE enlisted at the recruiting station in Woodstock Nov. 8 for three years. truly appreciated. Bo< lens of McHenry and other members of the 8th infantry division's 16th artillery recently took part in Exercise Shaker in Baumholder, Germany. Brig. Gen. John K. McCormick, commander of the 8th division artillery, commended the men of the artillery on their performance during the live-fire training exercise. Boelens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Boelens, 112 W. Hilltop drive, is a surveyor in the artillery's headquarters battery in Baumholder. He entered the Army in December, 1961, completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and arrived overseas in May 1962. The 23-year-old soldier is a 1956 graduate of Albert Lane high school in Chicago. Friends of Michael G. Mayfield will be happy to learr: that he has been named "soldier of the month" of his unit serving in Kcrea. In a letter to him signed by Carroll C. Jacobson, Jr., lieutenant colonel, the iatter said. "I wish to congratulate you on your outstanding accomplishment which has brought yoi. recognition as "soldier of the month" for January, 1963. Miller is now attending technical school for jet bombers at the Air Force base at Amarillo, Texas, where he will remain for fifteen weeks. David enlisted on Nov 5, 1962, and took five weeks of basic training at San Antonio before going to Amarillo. The young man is the son of Mrs. Dorothy M. Miller of McHenry. Timothy M. Mieling, radarman seaman apprentice, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gregory W. Mieling of 3811 East Lake Shore drive, Wonder Lake, is attending radarman school at the Naval Training center, CARIBBEAN - Roland G. Ullrich, seaman apprentice, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs Roland G. Ullrich of 3912 West Grove, McHenry, is serving with Tactical Air Control Squadron 22, which is engaged in a two-month amphibious exercise in the Caribbean. The exercise, dubbed Phibulex 1-63, involves five ships with more than 3,600 Navymen and Maiines embarked. The purpose of the exercise is to train the men in amphibious strike force tactics. The ships departed Norfork, Va., on Jan. 7, and are scheduled to return in March. Phillip E. Bartmann, 19, son of Mrs. George J. Fraunhoffer, 405 N. River road, McHenry, recently was promoted to specialist five at Richards- Gebaur Air Force Base, Mo., where he is a member of Headquarters, 4th Region, Army Air Defense Command. Specialist Bartmann, an electronics specialist, entered the Three county driver licenses were suspended this past week by the office of Secretary of Slate Charles F. Carpentier. They include Alfred J. Dorion, Robert A. Grant and David C. Lueck of Crystal Lake; Will R. Quinn of 5006 Westwood drive, and Stanley P. Zynskl of Rt. 2, McHenry, all for three violations. Probationary permits were issued to Joanne H. Ebel of Algonquin, James H. Morgan and Robert E. Parrish of Crystal Lake. » J NIGHT CLASSES .» Classes for the Grant Community high school adult ©verting school began on Monday, Feb. 4. total of 13 classes have nret. School officials believe that because of the severe cold weather on the nights of registration many people did not sign up for courses. Consequently, late registration will be accepted the night of class meetings next week. The high school general office will be open on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 11 through the 13, to accept any late registrations. TOUR PARK Mr. and Mrs. Tom Landre and family of Elm street, McHenry, recently took a guided tour at Carlsbad Caverns National park in New Mexico. His enlistment option was for airborne training, and after completion of basic he will move on to Fort Benning, Ga., for jump school. Phone 385-0044 Lt. Col. Robert H. West has informed Mrs. Frances Mc- Gowan of 1409 N. Green street, McHenry, that her husband, Pvt. Donald H. McGowan, was chosen by the officer of the day as outstanding soldier in the entire formation at - a recent field artillery Guard Mount at Fort Sill, Okla. The selection is based on soldierly appearance, knowledge of general and special orders, cleanliness of uniform And equipment, and attitude. There was approximately 100 men in the Guard Mount, which makes it evident that competition was keen. ROTARY NEWS The McHenry Rotary club was host on Jan. 31 to the AFS student who is now spending one year in this country, Carlos Ribas. This is the second time Carlos was a guest of the club and he gave a very interesting talk on his country and impressions he had gotten during his stay in the United States. Norb Mauch and Gene Freund are arranging a Valentine's party to be held at the McHenry Country Club the evening of Feb. 14 (Valentine's Day) for Rotarians and their wives. No doubt this will be one of the most outstanding affairs planned for our club this year as Norb (Mitch) Mauch and Gene along with their Rotary Anns, Helen and Olga, are noted for the warm hasiptdtity in evidence any time they are assigned on committees. Other future dates on the Rotary calendar include Thursday, Feb. 28, charter night for Mt. Prospect club, Arlington Heights sponsoring club to be held at Ray Foley's restaurant. Lincoln and Touhy Avcs., Lincolnwood, district conference April 16 and 17, Aurora Hilton motel, west end of East-West Tollway, district assembly May 8, Surma's restaurant, Homewood, sjwnsored by Governor Sandy's club Homewood, practically a MUST for all incoming presidents, secretaries, treasurers and directors. Secretary Heijiy Freund announced that twenty-one members had 100 percent attendance for the period of July 1 1962 to December 31, 1962. Attendance Chairman Herb Reihanspcrger and his assistant, Dan Justen, along with Doc. Freund, really deserve credit for getting the boys to make up. Three were fined on speeding charges in the court of Justice of the Peace Charles M. Adams this last Saturday. George Dunford of Genoa City, Wis., paid $13, Robert Jensen of Wonder Lake paid $12 and Dennis F. Young of Round Lake was fined $25, all for that offense. Stephen Reynolds of Woodstock was fined $8 for improper passing. A fine of $10 was imposed on Larry Jensen of Crystal Lake for disobeying a stop ^ign and $8 for not having an operator's license. Hugh McVey of Elgin paid $6 on a charge t>f driving with an expired operator's license. John Anderson of 1512 W. Hickory street, McHenry, was fined $50 for having open liquor in a motor vehicle. The lowest temperature re*w, corded during the month was a chilly 26 below zero on 24. On Jan. 9 the temperature reached the . high for the month, 38 degrees. After Jan. 11 the temi>erature did not rise to the 32 degree mark, again during the month. Total snowfall measured 13 inches.
