It is all' over for the War- • iMfiSi jpior- basketball team for this . , "year. We saw the boys lose a . ^ , 67-61 tussle to Woodstock Tuesday night in regional tour- Bamerit play in the new Elgin Larkin school. This was a real tight game &U the way, but the Warrior defense could not find a way to stop Anderson, a class.v basketball player with 33 points to his credit. Woodstock has all juniors in the lineup so look but for them next year. Nobody ran away from our Warriors this year, but the team lacked the punch to get on the winning side in the standings. It seemed that players took tyrns in being high point man. If any two of them could have clicked the same night, some of those games could have been won. * "< '• We liked the hustle on the '•••^tfam and find it hard to criticize' any team that is giving it the old try. Woodstock Puts McHenry Out Of Regional 67-61 The Woodstock Blue Streaks knocked the McHenry Warrior basketball team out of the regional tourney competition with a 67-61 victory at Elgin Larkin Tuesday nigjit. During most of the game the two teams bottled on even ^errrls as they had in twto previous games during the season. The Warriors started cold on shots, but Joe Fino's strong play and- scoring under the boards kept the team in competition, Fino fouled out of the game; and that revoltin' development did not help McHenry's chances one little bit. The Warrior defense failed to cope with the Streak offense, particularly the 33 points rolled up by the classy Anderson. Varsity McHenry FG FT F T L. Smith 5 1 3 11 T. Freund 2 1 3 5 T. Led by Lloyd Smith and John Rourke, the Warriors fell behind the Bronchos in the first period and were on the short end of a 13-6 score at the end of the quarter. The Orange and Black stormed back in the second period outshooting the Red and White home team by a 21-12 count, and thus left the court at the half with a 27-25 edge. Barrington bounced back in the third period on the strength of some excellent play by Condill and Graver to take a 42- 40 lead into the final period. A well balanced team effort was too much for the Bronchos in the last period as the Warriors maintained a safe lead on the strength of their excellent free throw shooting. Smith played an outstanding game, his best of the season as he tallied 18; points and led the team in rebounding wish 16. Rcurke also tallied 18 points toward the Warrior victory. The win enabled the Warriors to finish the conference schedule with a 5-9 record good enough for sixth place. Palatine successfully defended their 1961-62 crown as they went through the conference undefeated with a 14-0 record. This is the motto of the United Marian Lose# In Regional To St. Ed's, 67-63 On Monday evening Marian Central dropped a close 67 to 63 decision to St. Ed's of Elgin. The Green Wave of Elgin proved to be too strong from the free throw line as they scored 31 Doints on charity tosses. In a game marred with too much whistle tooting and Marian's ability to score •only 13 of 27 from their own free throw line many of which were one and one situations. The Hurricanes thereby ended their most successful season to date. Sporting, a 20 win and 4 loss record at the be ginning of the contest the Hurricanes found themselves quickly in arrears 7 to 1, but battled back to knot the scene at nine all. It was a see-saw affair and St. Ed's left the court at half time with a 34 to 31 edge. Without the services of their 6'5" sophomore center, Paul Nitz, who was en the sick list, the Hurricanes found difficulty in trying to control 'he backboards. This problem was duly increased when Rex Hester, who „ scored 9 field goals in the first half was forced to occupy the bench in the third quarter, because of picking up four personals in that first half. But, Coach Joe Gubbins went to his bench successfully with John Corso and Pete Parker, taking up the slack and at one point in the third quarter, the Hurricanes found themselves in the lead 48 to 44. Then the rool caved in, as the Hurricanes went to the free throw line four times unsuccessfully, all on one and one situations. The Green Wave roared back to take the lead 50 to 48 and that seemed to be the turning point in the game. The Hurricanes staged a last ditch effort with less than two minutes left in the game and the score reading 64 to 51, St. Ed's, and came within two points of the leader's scoring with seven seconds left to make the score read 65 to 63, a foul was called against Marian, as they tried to gain possession of the ball in those closing seconds and Evans of St. Ed's made the final score read St. Edward's 67, Marian Ontral 63. The high point man for St. Ed's was Evans with 30 points and for Marian's Hurricanes, Rex Hester with 21 points. ST, MEL HANDS HURRICANE FIVE * 60 TO 52 LOSS The Marian Central Hurricane? traveled to Chicago Saturday night to take on St. Mel's and returned home on the losing end of a 60 to 52 score. 6 Playing on a revamped swimming pool, turned basketball floor, proved to be the Hurricanes undoing, as the local county five, who are used to playing in spac'ous fieldhouses, could nor. get used to the confined quarters. Marian played St. Mel's on close to even terms the first half, as the teams went out for their half-time intermission with St. Mel's leading 29 to 27. Hoder of St. Mel's was high point man for the evening with 24, with three local lads scoring in double figures for Marian, Stilling's high of 16, followed by Hester's 13 and Vycital's 10. MARY'S CAGERS LOSE TO DIXON IN FINALS 29-25 After playing the best basketball exhibited in ^the tournament in the semi-finals, St. Mary's of McHenry went cold in the finals to bow to St. Mary's of Dixon 29-25. Only Jackie Hester continued to play sharp ball offensively, as his mates' insulated suits suffered malfunctions and could not guide the ball into the hoop. St. Mary's of Dixon, with two boys around six foot mark, protected their defensive board well and gave the McHenryites fewer chances to compensate for their errotic shots. In the final reckoning, free throws, as they so often do, spelled thcdifference, as the victors sank six consecutive gift tosses in the last minute to extend their tenuous lead to four points and the Rockford Diocesan championship. .In the afternoon semi-final, the local St. Mary's with perfect- functioning heated suits, roared out to a 27-10 half-time lead. All the starters (Jackie Hester, Jim Frost, Pat Camasta, Jerry Glosson and Bob Schaefer) performed as if they invented the game. In the second stanza, our Royals coasted into a 40-24 triumph on the shoulders of Dave Schaefer, Dave Meyer, Bob Funk, Dick Jaeger and Gary Schmitt, with some added help from Roger Pawlikowski, Tim Kaleno, Francis Mazzone and Frank Harrison. (Two other squad members, John O'Brien and Larry Smith were left at home to help carry one of the Junior Foresters teams to victory.) In the other semi-final, St. Mary's of Dixon defeated Holy Cross of Batavia in a hard fought game 31-27. For the third place trophy, Holy Cross dropped an exciting come-fromway- behind decision to Rock- St. Bernadette (St. Mary's victim) 39-37. Front row left to right: G. Sorenson, J. Anderson, R. MS Schuerr Qualifies For State Finals In Wrestling Larry Schuerr, a 154 pound Junior, placed second in the Waukegan Sectional Tournament. He lost to Madison of Waukegan. Because Larry placed second in a t well-fought nicitch, he travelled to Champaign- Urbana to wrestle at ihe University of Illinois Friday and Saturday. Bob Wahl, conference champion in the 180 weight division, lost the semi-finals bout to a boy from Glenbrook North by a 1-0 in an overtime. But Bob wrestled again that night in a consolation match and beat his opponent, a boy from New Trier, 9-0 to place third in the tournament. State Tournament When the final results of the State Wrestling meet at Champaign-Urbana, Illinois last weekend were compiled, it was discovered that the McHenry Grapplers suffered only one major set back. Larry Schuerr, a 154 pound Junior, lost his first round match of his career to Tim Murphy of East Leydens in a brilliantly fought battle. Larry displayed some of his finest wrestling holds, but failed to win as he settled for a 7-2 loss. However, great optimism is held for future appearances of this speedy Junior.
