He will now be stationed in Oklahoma. Forgotten People It seems as though we have forgotten about a very fine neighbor of ours, Frank Adler. About a year ago he had an accident which has left him in poor health and bad vision. Also, recently he has undergone surgery of a different nature. Now he is recuperating nicely, but would really ap- Gar bilge I have received another complaint, this time about the garbage cans and all the papers that are flying around into other people's yards. If everyone in the village would pick up the debries and junk in their'yards we would not have to have this in our column. Spring is here now so let's all clean up and make this a better place to live in. Busy Grandmothers The two buisest people I know in Sunnyside are Mrs. MacLaughlin and Gert Mackinson. Practice hard, Sheila, we'll all have our windows open wide this summer just to listen to your fine music. nlJ & A disturbing subject of conversation just now is "goverriment falsification" of news. Whether Congress can do anything effective about this situation is an open question. Net only have the mass media and the public been justifiably annoyed by this administration's deliberate flouting of the First Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and a free press, but •tfheir confidence in governmentreleased informatfon has been seriously impaired. This member of Congress doubts that the legislative body will take any real corrective action. In full recognition of the fact that the executive Accidents / It seems that two of our young ones had a little misfortune happen to them. Blensed Virgin Sodality The Blessed Virgin Sodality will receive Communion at thr second mass on Sunday April 7. Breakfast will be served right after mass at the Community Hall. branch of our government is "menacing, manipulating ami distorting the news," the doubt is still present--and expressed here. The basis for this doubt is simply that most of the news manipulation is motivated by paitisan political reasons. And it is too much to expect that til* Democru tic-con trolled Congressional "coBinnUeeS* will g.v so tar as to impugn the Democratic Chief Executive or hk appointees. As a member of the House n immittee on Government Opations, this writer has atnded hearings on this vital subject. Congressman John E. MUSK, Democrat of California, who initiated an 'investigation cl' news manipulation under the Eisenhower Administration, heads the Democraticcontrolled subcommittee in charge of these hearings. The sub-committee was able to achieve substantial results at earlier sessions in exploding the myth of an executive privilege to withhold information. But, in that case, Democrats were investigating Republicans. In a more recent review of the Executive's claim to the right of secrecy with resjiect to military information, Chairman Moss's sub-committee ap|>carcd much loss inquisitive and not at all critical. This, of course, was following the election ot President Kennedy. Today, the misuse of "privilege with respect 1o public information" by the Executive department is obviously m^re flagrant. The Pentagon's public information officer claims that. government has an inherent J right to lie. Again, it is claimed that "management" of the news is a defense weapon which may be used with impunity. American news media, frankly dubious of the "camouflaged" handouts from the Pentagon, frequently use "foregin" sources in preparing factual news stories.- -- . •--»-• - The public's suspicious re<- ception of "governmental" statements--as l>eing less than the whole trout h---in • well grounded.^A loss of confidence is an inevitable result of confirmed suspicions. Congress can--and should--<lo something decisive to correct a rapidly deteriorating situation of "newi> management." The not-srsubtle implication is whether Democrats investigating Democrats can "hew to the. line, and let the chips fall where ' they may"? GOOD,ROADS DAY Each April 15, beginning this year, will be known officially as "Good Roads Day" in Illinois under provisions of a bili signed into law by Gov. Otto Kerner earlier this month. Enactment' of the legislation came 50 years after Illinois inaugurated its program of state aid for counties building paved roads. Such aid was provided in what was known as the Tiee Bill, approved by the 48th General Assembly in 1913. Thf legislation that has created "Good Roads Day" asks that April 15 "be observed throughout the state as a day for hold- _ Pag* Wlneteeri ing appropriate exercises In the public schools and elsewhere to show the value of our public highways toward the economy of our state and the contri buttons they represent to the prosperity, comfort and wellbeing of the citizens of Illinois." CUQD ivr AT HOME AND SAVE DOG PROBLKM Dogs that are allowed-to run freely or are abandoned in the country to fend for themselves, harass or kill wildlife, according to a report from the Illinois Department of Conservation. Studies of the Illinois pheasant indicate that free running dogs and ground squirrels are responsible for more nest and egg destruction than any pther predators. The studies also indicate that dogs, singly and in packs, injure does about to drop fawns and kill fawns that do not have the endurance for a fast run. DR. HENRY FREUND OPTOMETRIST At 1224 N.
