"I regret that you all must face so many obstacles, and must often wonder if it is really worth the effort. "I apologize that so many of us do not take the time to become acquainted with the issues. Unfortunately, a local election often is influenced by many petty grievances., "It is to be hoped that one day, we may all realize that to decide for one candidate, does not automatically indicate an abiding distaste, nor lack of appreciation of his opponent. It is the duty of the intelligent voter to weigh the merits of each candidate, and ultimately choose the one closest to his ideals. "I would hope that one day all our local candidates would be provided the opportunity to present their views at an open meeting -- sponsored, perhaps, by a service organization. Many have argued against involvement in politics, but to present all the candidates could hardly be construed as endorsement by the organization. "I hope that in the zest of campaigning, none of you, in retrospect, has cause for regret. No office is worth a victory, if achieved by unworthy means! "To the winners -- congratulations and good luck for a successful term of office. I hope you always are mindful of your duty and public debt, by virtue of our vote of conlidence. "To the losers -- please remember not only the loss of the race, but remember, too, the many people who believed in and voted for you! I hope your interest will not waver; and that you will contribute of your talents by participation in your area of interest, perhaps by concerted effort to attend City Council, school board, and township board meetings. We all should, shouldn't we??? They are open to the public; and we're never too old to learn! "The contest • i» over; the victory won -- so now let's get on with the tasks at hafld.
