WARRIOR NINE BEATS STREAKS; SHARE LOOP LEAD Showdown Battle Here Saturday With Libertyville Phil Schmidt pitched the McHenry Warriors into a tie for first place in the North Suburban baseball race last Wednesday as the Warriors edged Woodstock 4-2. Libertyville was trimmed by the Harrington Bronchos 6-1 to force the tie. Woodstock managed two runs on three hits off Schmidt in the first inning, but thereafter Schmidt was the master of the occasion, allowing four safeties over the last six frames. Dick Gaylord, Woodstock right hander, held the Warrior offense in check over the first three innings, striking out five. In the top of the fourth, however, John Hiller led off with a double to (left center, followed by an error on Jim Meyers roller to second. Then Lloyd Smith singled to right scoring Hiller, sending Meyers to third. Freund's fly to center scored Meyers with the tying run. The Warriors scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth. Meyers walked, Smith sacrificed, and after Freund struck out, Tim Farr singled to left driving in Meyers. Hiller Doubles The Warriors final tally came across in the seventh as Himplemann led off with a hit, Fino rolled out, Himplemann advancing to second, and after Schmidt fanned, Hiller doubled scoring Himplemann. Schmidt fanned eight Streaks while walking one. Gaylord also did a fine job on the mound for the Blue and White, striking out nine and walking only one. The Warriors and Libertyville have identical 7-3 records as they near a showdown next Saturday at McCracken Field at 1 p.m. The battle for the conference lead was washed out Saturday in the top of the fourth inning of game one with the Warriors leading 3-1. Before next Saturday however the Warriors must play Crystal Lake here on Tuesday, while Libertyville plays Palatine. Results in the last spring pheasant census, taken In 1958, and sponsored jointly by the Illinois Department of Conservation and the Illinois Natural History Survey, revealed pheasants were most abundant in the following 10 counties: Livingston, Ford, Marshall, McLean, Iroquois, DeKalb, La- Salle, Kendall, Kankakee and Woodford. Pheasants have never established thriving populations in the central western and southem counties. The 28 southern counties of Illinois in which pheasants were not found in previous censuses will not be included in a 1963 count being made with the cooperation of rural letter carriers. McHenry Country Club Newt Shamrocks Win Season Opener 4-1 Over Dundee The fusi round of the aggregate score twosome tournament got underway Sunday with the uniform of the day being parkas or whatever could be worn to keep out the cold and wind. Sixty-four members got off the first tee and from the scores that were posted, these men were just out there swinging to keep warm. *he foursome of P. Overton, J. Moss, C. Pyles and J. Smithson was «A^e Jgarmest on the course, averaging 101 strokes each for a total of 404 swings. Paul must have been haif frozen wtih his 79. He was one of three who shot in the 70's; the other two were D. Rosing and E. Seepe. This was out of 80 scores posted on the handicap sheet which shows that most of the fellows were off their game. But even at that, most of the comments were that a great time was had by all. Everyone met a bunch of swell guys. Game of the week goes to D. Weber, who is a 12 handicapper and shot a T6. Nice game! Low net winners in the 1 to 12 bracket were: F. Rourke, J. Varese and D. Weber; tied for 1st with 72's. In the 12 and up bracket, the winners were: 1st -- H. Jensen, 68; 2nd, E. August 4 McHenry at Little League Notes By Bill Bolger In just one more week, on May 17, 18 and 19 the season will officially begin. Games will be played on weekends only, until school lets out. Then there will be games each nite as well as weekend contests. Because of the interest in Little League teams, I'll explain briefly how the teams afe selected. Each year the rtiajor teams need about thirty boyd from last year's minors to replace boys who have graduated. After they fill up their rosters, the minor league managers get together and select the boys they feel are best for the minor league. They have to select all the 12, 11 and 10 year old boys before they can fill out their rosters with some 9 yr. old boys. Next the miniature league managers select their teams from the 8 yr. olds and the 9 yr. olds who are left. Occasionally, a boy developes Into quite a star in the minors or miniatures. When this happens the managers in the higher bracket have quite a battle to determine who gets the future great. Ron Mauer started the Shamrocks off in great Cxstyle this year as he pitched the full nine innings to lead the team to a 4 to 1 win over Dundee at McHenry last Sunday. Ron struck out 14 batters and walked only 4. Tom McAuliffe, starting off successfully on his managerial career, did a great job on the receiving end. His snap throw to first picked off a man in the fourth inning to stop a Dundee rally. It was an all around team victory. Gene Freund played a great game defensively at third. There were a couple of throwing errors, but that is to be expected this early in the season. Next Sunday the Shamrocks will travel to Johnsburg.
