Thursday, June 20, 1963 THE McHENRY PLA1NDEALER McCullom Lake COMMITTEES PREPARE FOR SUMMER FESTIVAL Eye Leveaqoc Organizational work has begun for the Cullom-Knoll sponsored summer festival which will be held Saturday, Aug. 3. General chairman is Bill Walter and he has named Don Parenti, Mickey Murray, Roger Kinsey, Bob Fernandez, Stewart Lorch, and Mary Kantorski for committee chairman. Others will be named in the future and their names and events will be published. Roger Kinsey has charge of the "suds" department, Bob Fernandez will again handle the balloon game. Three events which have established quite a reputation and attract a large crowd are the bike parade for young lads, the buggy promenade which stars little ladies, and the climax of the program is the crowning of Miss McCullom Lake in the early evening. All of these events will be judged by prominent persons residing outside of the village to eliminate any chance of prejudice. This year's event promises to be the most spectacular and you can circle this date in red! For those who would like to participate actively "behind the scenes" you have the opportunity to get in on the ground floor. Many people will be needed to stage a production of this scope. Your contribution for handling one of the many facets of the program will be gratefully accepted. There is no denying that there is work involved. But, the satisfaction received from working on a deal like this, has proved reward enough. Pick up the phone and call Bill Walter now -- 385-2639! don't throw anything into the lake! Lake Test Taken As of Monday morning, a sample of the water from our lake, taken at the proper level and with all precautions was turned over to the authorities. Several hours are required for the development of the test and as we went to press, the results were not disclosed. Please check elsewhere in the Plaindealer for the results. If possible, the outcome was to be ready by Tuesday morning. There have been rumors and wild tales forthcoming from many sources with no facts 1 To the best of our ability, we shall try in the future, as in the past, to give you the correct story. Th? Cullom-Knoll Association is sponsoring the test. The Web Is Closing! The identity of the culprits responsible for throwing refuse, broken bottles, cans and other debris into the lake is about to be exposed. We have it on good authority, from an adult resident of the community, that young children of various ages have been conducting these wanton acts. As parents of young boys and girls who may not be aware of the serious consequences of their activities, we are asking all mothers and fathers to caution any children who use the beach area for a playground. Please Road Work Neare Completion Necessary repairs of upkeep of our village roads is just about completed, according to commissioner Art Stuhlfeier who has been devoting a great deal of time to the work. He has been working very closely with the engineers and workmen and the results are gratifying. Necessary grading, graveling, and oiling has been done and spot patching will be done where indicated. This Report was made at the last meeting of the president and trustees held on Monday, June 10, in the beachhouse. Finance chairman Bill Creutz asked for passage of Ordinance No. 57 pertaining to the budget for the next fiscal year and it received unanimous • approval. Resolution No. 27 pertaining to streets and bridges also received unanimous consent. Art Nelson, police commissioner, reported on his department. All officers recently participated in a civil defense exercise. Stricter law enforcement of the beach area will be studied by a special committee named for that purpose by president Levesque. Chapman and Cutler were designated bonding attorneys (special counsel) by resolution No. 28. This pertains to the proposed sewer project. The next meeting will be held Monday, June 24, at 8 p.m. in the beachhouse. All residents are invited and encouraged to attend. cases of measles and one bout of mumps. "All is well that ends well," according to the old cliche and everything in this household is fairly well under control with Mom a bit the worse for wear. Complications Following Surgery Following a night of pain and discomfort, Edith Brendle entered McHenry hospital a week ago Saturday =and underwent -surgery that following Monday. It was discovered that she had a serious appendix situation and this has caused complications following her surgery. She will be hospitalized a few more days, according to husband, Paul, and may be home the end of week, if everything progresses as expected. We are sincerely sorry that Edith had to suffer to this extent. She is faithful and willing worker and enqoys participating. Wouldn't it be nice to remember all those incapicitated at this time? Why not drop a line today; it will be much appreciated. hubby Bill with the latest addition to their familyl, an adorable, fuzzy tailed, masked baby raccoon. Bill has an affinity for these normally wild creatures and the latest is here to stay! The wee one which he obtained from Tiny Tomasello has endeared himself even to Eleanor (?) and can usually be spotted around Bill's neck while he navigates the family vehicle.. This is Bill's second venture in this department and he does admit Ao considerable knowledge. Bill already raised one of these fellows and we understand they make excellent pets. "Rots of ruck," fella. Rough Beginning But Making Progress Serious difficulties surrounded the birth of William Clyde Betts a week ago Tuesday, June 11, in Sherman hospital, Elgin. He drew his first breath at 7 p.m. and his mother had been hospitalized 12 hours earlier. He was placed in an oxygen tent where he remained for 8 hours. As soon as it was possible, his birth weight was recorded at 8 lbs., 7 oz. According to to his father, Ken, the little lad is now doing just fine and mother Jeanette and son came home last Saturday. He joins a family already populated by Sandra, 10, Kenny, 9, and Karen, 8. We are gratified that everything is going fine and we offer our best wishes on this happy occasion. Bake Booth For Summer Festival Delicious home made pastries will be offered at the summer festival and this booth will be under the sponsorship of the Ladies of the Lake. Mary Kantorski has graciously accepted the chairmanship. She will have help from Alice Gustafson, Helen Lorch, Elma Nelson and Marie McKim. The women have adjourned for the summer months of July and August amP^pill convene for the next sessifm, Thursday, Sept. 12. Several of the gals were overjoyed with the results of the games and they are Sally Olsen, Louise Berquist, Mary Kantorski, Emma Pyritz, Marriet McNamara, Marge Stacknick and Bobbie Carroll. Alice Gustafson and Emma Pyritz provided the "tasty pastry" and Alice was "swamped" for her most unusual frosting. Ask her for the recipe. Too Close For Comfort! A Serious brush with tragedy occurred to young Elmer Taylor (one of the nicest youngsters you could meet) recently. While working on a farm in the area, he stabbed himself with a silo fork and infection set into his hand. He was taken to McHenry hospital a week ago Friday and given treatment for blood poisoning. By Sunday, surgery was indicated. With the proper care and medication, he continued to improve and was brought home last Saturday where he is still convalescing. It never rains, but what it pours, and it sure did in this household of seventeen people. Along with E'mer's accident, Mr. and Mrs. Cal Gibson also were involved in three graduations, one communion, eight cases of measles and seven cases of mumps! Wee Virginia, only IV2, suffered through two Another Candidate For Fiesta Queen Happy we are to add the name of Miss Linda Watson to the roster of lovely young women entered in McHenry's Fiesta queen contest. She joins candidates Sandi Brennan, Barbara Lorch and Kathy Murray and we wish them all kinds of luck! That's No Name For A Baby! We are referring to the expletives uttered by Eleanor Freak Accident Statistics prove that most accidents occur in the home, but wouldn't you think a person would be safe in his own bed? Not so with Otto Pyritz! He fell out of his and caused a great deal of panic for his wife. All jokes aside, he did suffer an injury to his head, but he is bearing up rather well. He treats it like a joke now, but it hurt like !!!! Capitol Commuter Republican County chairman Jake Levesque motored to Springfield last week in line with his position in the state treasurer's office. He returned home late Thursday night and then departed Saturday morning for LaSalle, to meet with other Republican county chairmen. He has been really travelling since January and more to come. cratic Club. The women were impressed with the oratory. Little League Really Swinging Merv Schmitt and his crew are doing a fine job of coaching and managing the McCullom Lake Little League which has members from Ringwood and West Shore Beach as well as the local lads. The boys play every Tuesday and Thursday evening and if you like the sport at all, you will be impressed when you attend their games. They need a strong rooting section so why not reserve a seat on the bench now! Teen Hostess Jeanette Hocin who graduated from McHenry junior high school on June 5 hostessed a party for her young friends last week at the beach. They prepared their own hearty fare of hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and the usual goodies. The participants included Bonnie Bradley, Ziggy Schatz, Gail and Ed Anderson, Larry Brusso, Betsy Fossum, Sue Low, Donna Schlofner, Darlene Pike, John Wright, Jim Woods, Ginny Taylor, Butch Baumbeck, Peter Jones and Ginny Hart her. Jeanette was aided and abetted by her sister, Jeanne, and other members of the family, including mother Sally who "footed the bill." Surgery For Summer Resident Mrs. Grace Farley who lives with her son and wife, the Jack Farleys, underwent surgery in Alexian Brothers' hospital, Chicago, recently. No report as to her condition yet, but that news will be forthcoming when Tony and George Luto visit her some time this week. The Farleys are a delightful family and would be happy to print the news that they have become permanent residents. They own a home on Knollwood Drive. Attend Women's Luncheon The remarks made by Mrs. Theresa Schultz at the luncheon sponsored by the McHenry Democratic women were very well received by Barbara Thacker, "Tony" Luto, and daughter, Lynne Schultz. These three were Theresa's guests at Crystal Lake, recently. The principal speaker was Herb Creutz when confronted by Franks of the Young Demo- Natal "Daze" 'N' Mat. The oxygen demand test was rated as excellent. No fish kill or sewage was found to be present. As you can see, the phone (385-3191) was busy this week.
