A solar eclipse results when the moon, passing, between the tearth and the sun, hides all or part of the sun from our view. The July 20 eclipse will bring total darkness along a path through Alaska, Canada and Maine, and a partial covering in the continental United States, the Caribbean area, most of Mexico and Central America and other parts. Doctors tell us that while the sun is normally much too bright for a person to view comfortably, during an eclipse enough light is blocked out to permit easy observation. This is when the rays do their damage -- unnotieedj because the retina is not sensitive to pain. During one eclipse over 3,500' eyes were burned in Germany, and fifty-nine cases occurred in Seattle, Wash., in 1959. Similar reports have come from almost every country in which eclipses have occurred. In -Some cases people have viewed it with two pair of sun glasses, and even then the eyes were damaged. • > The fact that a solar eclipse can c?iuse permanent and irreparable blindness has been known sincie fh£ days of early Greek astronomers and philosophers. Even Socrates warned that it should be observed only indirectly by looking at its reflection in a pool of water. Certainly, then, it is worth every caution to prevent such an occurrence when the eclipse occurs next weekend. Savory Ham-Veal Ring Flavor it up and dress it up . .. meat loaf, that is . . . an<| you'll have a sure winner for your next summertime supped party. In fact, ypu'll probably have this Savory Ham-Veal Ring. For the "flavor up-', add canned apple sauce to the riieat mixture. For the "dress up", bake the loaf iri a big ring. In the last minutes of baking, crown it dramatically with more of the apple sauce. Then, after the ring is on the- platter, you might place' a buttered whol«> cauliflower in the center. To serve, cut in husky wedges right through the meat to the center of the vegetable. . This ham-veal loaf can be served hot, as suggested here. Or cold, sliced down and accompanied by salad. Ahd it's easy to put together: 3 eggs 2 cups canned apple sauce 3 cups soft bread crumbs V* cup ketchup 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Vi cup minced onion Dash pepper lYi pounds ground ham shoulder 1 Vi pounds ground real shoulder Cooked cauliflower VA cup melted butter Salt Paprika Parsley sprigs- Beat eggs; add % cup apple sauce and bread crumbs; let stand 10 minutes. "Sincerely, "Mrs. Allean Moore "814 W. West Blvd. "McHenry, 111."
