S'S*9* Stxtoe* THE McHENRY PLAINDEALES Thuxaday, July 25. 1963 TflHEMEN HOLD ANNUAL CARNIVAL *'• THIS WEEKEND Bbrv IjOU HartOf - •Hite it tike big weekend!!! The W.L. annual Firemen's fesrnival will be held Friday. • Saturday and Sunday nights at the fire house. Everybody -- but just everybody -- goes tD the Firemen's carnival so don't you be an old stay-athome. These boys are on alert 24 hours a day -- 365 days • year to be of service to you When you are in trouble and . need a Oreman or the rescue squad or ambulance service and many other services which they render. And they don't get paid for it either. This is the one time in the year when they ask your help by suppurfing their carnival so they can continue to operate for the coming year. Any money spent at the Firemen's carnival is returned to you a hundredfold' throughout the year when you may have need of their services which they give gladly. And besides that -- you'll have a good time which is the purpose of having a carnival. So, gat yourself up out of that rocking chair, boy, and get on over to the carnival and have some fun. Firemen's Auxiliary Needs Help All you good cooks who like to bake -- you're the ones the auxiliary is looking for. They need baked goods and especially the kind that you are known for. You know you can make a better cake than Mrs. Whosits down the street does -- so why not show her up by baking one for the auxiliary to sell at their bake sale booth at the Firemen's carnival. You bread, cookie, and pie makers are needed too. These gals are the ones who sit up ~*il night making coffee for the firemen whey they are fighting fires) -- and they don't complain a bit -- so why not show them you appreciate their work by donating some baked goods for their booth. It's all for a good cause and' it will certainly be appreciated by the ladies. Either take your goodies to the booth at the carnival or call 653-3321 or 653-4382 for pfttk up service. Now about giving these girls a hand? Double Birthday At Schroeders There were two very tired but happy little girls in the Ken Schroeder household last Sunday night. They'd had just about the biggest and best party two girls could have. To transfer it into the vernacular of the teenage group -- it was a real "blast." Susan. Schroeder will be nine years old on July 30 and Linda Schroeder was eight on July 21 which was Sunday, so the two girls had a double party. They had double everything -- double cakes, double food, double people, and double fun. Fifty children attended the party and played games, and even had a real twist contest. Winners of the twisters were Rohn Nelson, Jr., and Terry Cristy. Mrs. Harriet Koehler was ih charge of organizing games. Mrs. Rose Simon baked two beautiful doll cakes for the girls, fashioned in the hoop skirt design. According to Mrs. Schroeder they were absolutely too beautiful to eat. The gfrls would even have had double grandmas at the party but their Grandma Schroeder was ill and unable to come. Their Grandma Huschke came out for the weekend and their Aunt Esther -- both of Chicago. With about six spending the weekend in addition to their own crew sleeping space was somewhat limited but that makes it all the more fun for the kids. After the majority of the kids had left the remainder had a splash party in their pool. According to Shirley -- they were all having so much fun that none of them wanted to go home when the party was over. There were quite a few who couldn't attend inasmuch as they had to participate in the Fiesta Day parade in McHenry. In addition to tired girls there were a few tired moms too. Dora Nelson, Gloria Gould, Jean Kasting and Joan Adolfie were the girls who pitched in and helped in addition to Harriet Koehler and Rose Simon. Shirley Schroeder said that if it hadn't been for all these wonderful "gals" she just couldn't have managed at all. Can you just imagine trying to rid% herd on fifty youngsters all by yourself. However, it seems that the ladies had just as much fun as the kids. And so it was a happy happy birthday and now the girls are waiting til next year when they can do it all over again. Congratulations And BeHt Wifthes To Mr. and Mrs. Norman Williams of 7616 Hickory Road who celebrated their wedding anniversary last week. To Catherine Wurm who celebrated her "36th" birthday, July 19. To Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wenkel who became proud parents of a boy on July 15. Robert Miller To Be Hrtme Next Week Robert Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Miller of 7401 Birch Drive, will be discharged from the Army next week. He has completed a 3 year tour of duty two years of which were spent in Germany. He took his basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri. On Sunday, July 28, the Millers will have a "Welcome Home" party in the form of open house from 3 to 7 p.m. Robert is a 1960 graduate of McHenry high school. Ottoeone' House Gvmti On Sunday, July 14, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ottoson of Wonder Lake entertained Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Snelson of Homewood, 111., and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Klauzer and their four children of Bedford, Mass. This is the first time in six years Mrs. Ottoson has seen her niece. The twins, Janet and Jodi, were four months old then and have been in Okinawa until a year ago when Mr. Klauzer was transferred to Bedford, Mass. He is making the Army his career and has charge of the Officer's Club. A lot of news and fun was passed around at this reunion. Mr. Snelson is one of Mrs, Ottoson's brothers. On Saturday, July 20, Miss Mildred Lange of Oak Park and Mrs. Margaret Ottway of Chicago visited Mr. and Mrs. Ottoson. Both ladies are friends of long standing of the Ottosons. Miss Lange was Mrs. Ottoson's bridesmaid 38 years ago July 1 Wonder Lake Garden Club News Twelve members attended the meeting of the W. L. But you know you are closer to the top. And that very aptly describes one aspect of man's quest lor spiritual vaderstandingi ONE SUNDAY IN CHURCH DOESN'T MAKE US CHRISTIANS. And sometimes a month of Sundays finds us still struggling with doubts and wrestling with temptations. Prayers don't always seem to have been answered. And parts of the Bible may constantly baffle us. But the truth of the matter is that every spiritual step we take is eacactly that -- a step. It may leave our perspective unchanged for the moment. But it ie bringing us closer to that higher level of life from which man's vision enlarges. Un^il we reach life's spiritual crest, the most important step is always the NEXT.
