But not at our house!! OFFICER BLAMES THOUGHTLESSNESS FOR ACCIDENTS Today's automobiles .Hi* "Th£ products of untold amounts -of engineering skills/ combined with the best manufacturing know-how the world has ever known. "Still," says City Police John Weichmann, "cars can't think." Proficiency in manuevering must be supplied by the operator. All of us try to educate children in how to conduct themselves in traffic. Under normal circumstances children know and practice the rules th£y have learned at home or in their classes. Unusual conditions such as a rolling ball or chasing with other kids often times causes forgetfulness. "It is during these periods of tenis, porary thoughtlessness that kids are moving fast and without regard to the nearby flow of traffic" warns Officer Weichmann. Pedestrians account for approximately one-fourth of all fatal accidents with children under fourteen years of age and the over sixty-five age groups making up nearly sixty per-cent of the total. In either case thoughtlessness is the most probable cause. This leaves the responsibility for these human lives almost entirely in the hands of the drivers.
