Florence and Jack's oldest son, John, returned from a nine month tour of duty abroad his ship in the Mediterranean; and he returned laden with gifts from a good number of the countries he visited. The gifts included a tablecloth from Malta; a cuckoo clock from Germany; jewelry from Italy; a plate from France ;etc. It was gift enough thsft he was home for the eighteen day leave; but he topped all the gifts with the best; that being his Third Class Petty Officer rating which he earned last February but kept it a secret until he could bring home the news himself. What a thrilling and rewarding moment that must be for parents! Being a born fisherman, John spent a good part of his leave fishing in Wisconsin and contrary to most reports I've had this year; had a successful catch. John has since returned to his ship and I hope his family will keep us posted onjtiis travels, etc. number of hikes and cookouts and learned new crafts. It was a very full two weeks and just about everything they do applies toward one badge or another, so there is one young lady who will have a badge sash to be mighty proud of. The rest of the family has been busy, too. Betty's sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Rosenthal, and their two sons from Stevens Point, Wis., came for a two-day visit. (Son No. 3 stayed at home.) While here they visited deer haven and went swimming. And this past week, Johnny has been on vacation with his Aunt Ramona and cousin, Danny, in Waupaca, Wis., on Columbia Lake Between fishing and swimming and visiting relatives, it's been a busy week for him. Perfect Day That's what it turned out to be for Alice and Ray Bieschke on Saturday, August 17, when daughter, Tammy, was flower girl at her godfather's wedding. They were all naturally worried that she might get stage fright at the last moment; but as all children will do, she did them up proud and just about stole the show. Tammy was one of seven girls in the bridal party, all of whom wore different shades of blue. She and the ring-bearer. Bruce, who was a cousin of the bride really were a sight to behold. Tammy was also thrilled to death with her gift, a charm bracelet. Congratulations to the bride (Darleen Buck) and the groom (Robert Ehrenberg) and our wishes for a future filled with happiness. . Lovely Day That's the only way I can describe my feelings about my birthday that has just passed. My husband, Stan, and our children, Judy, Stan, Mary, Billy and Paul, along with friends and family made it just wonderful. I received many lovely cards and gifts and even a birthday telegram. On Saturday, Stan took me out for a delicious dinner and then we spent the remainder of the evening with Millie and George Kropf and Vi and Ken Crane. Another page to add to my book of memories. Bake Sale The Blessed Virgin Sodality of St. John's church will hold a bake sale Sunday, Sept. 1, after all the Masses. Since they always have more demands than supply, all the women (not just the sodality member, but all the women) of the parish are asked to furnish one of their home made goodies (anything you care to donate) to help make this bake sale the biggest and best yet. Busy Family Leave it to the Lakowske family to really enjoy a summer. This year has been a mighty busy one for them. Mary Jane just completed a two-week stay at the Girl Scout established camp, Camp Far Horizons, at Hanover, 111. She was the only girl out of Troop 88 who was able to attend. Being the scout that she is, Mary Jane enjoyed it very much. "They had swimming twice a day, with lessons; a Knock, Knock LaVerne Noah will assist again this year with the Cystic Fibrosis Fund Drive, to be held Sept. 1 to the 15th. Knocking on doors for ddnations is not an easy task so be generous in this community effort to obtain funds for research and care for the victims of this No. 2 disease killer of children. Reminder Did you get your tickets for the Johnsburg Rescue Squad Dance yet? If not, don't forget, because the dance is this Saturday, August 31. If you haven't been contacted at your home, don't let this keep you from going. You can purchase tickets at the door. Summer's Over Yes, here it is Labor Day weekend already and where did the summer go? Along with the last holiday of the summer months comes the usual hurry-scurry of getting the kids off to school. Ye gads, what a chore. I don't know if I'll survive! School opens on Sept. 4, both St. John's and Johnsburg public schools. Four in school and only one home-- Wow! -- Coffee anyone? They saw the various sights in Tulsa, including the Will Rogers Memorial, and spent four days at the Grand Lake of the Cherokees. This man-made lake with 1,300 miles of shoreline presented boating, swimming, water skiing and fishing pleasures for the Gavin and Patula families before the Gavins departed for home on the following Sunday. Spending two days at home, Harry and Grace and the three children left on Wednesday to visit until Sunday with Grace's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Saggio, Cleveland, Ohio.
