REVENUE QUESTIONED At n recent township meeting held at the inopportune time of 2 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 3, those people present voted to retain the s|>ecial hard road tax which was represented to bring in an estimated revenue of $80,- 000. It is suggested that those who presented this "estimated" revenue figure of $80,000 should re-check their figures. It would seem that the revenue figure of $80,000 is erroneous and not even close to the suggested "correct" figure. The accepted special hard road tax is .167 per cent <>f the full ease value or commonly called assessed value in M&Ugpry township. According' to the county clerk's officc. this valuation has climbed about $1 million each yo;ir in recent years to the figure of $70,823,4(30. Simple multiplication would give us a figure of $118,275, but subtracting 5 per cent for non-payment ol taxes leaves a net revenue figure oT about $112,361. This Mgure is jemarkedly differed from that presented to the voters. This difference amounts to $32,361! Considering that the revenue for 1962 from the special hard road tax was already over $100,000, would not $80,000 be immediately visible as in er- I'or? This error was suggested, at that township meeting on Sept. 3, but left unanswered by those who suggested the l i^'ure of $80,000. We are all in favor of means such as a hard road tax which would enable us to maintain and build our roads, but errors in revenue-reporting to the sum of $32,361 causes us to question the reason for such an error. DRIVER LICENSE EXAMS SET NEW HIGH TWO MONTHS Both June and July of this year broke all previous records for the number of driver license examinations given to applicants in a one-month period, Secretary of State Charles F. Carpentier has announced. The July total was 93,708. In June, 85,767 examinations were given. The previous high was in June, 1960, when 75,344 applicants were examined. Secretary Carpentier cited three reasons for the increase: Enrollment in the high school driver education program has increased substantially, the licenses of a large percentage of drivers over 70 years of age expire this year, and children born in the years immediately following World War II are now becoming eligible to hold licenses. VETO BILLS Among bills recently vetoed by Gov. Otto Kerner are the following: A bill creating an Illinois State Fruit commission independent of state control; a change of State Police Merit board rules which might cause individual troopers to move considerable. distances from their homes in order to receive promotion; and a bill which would prevent the establishment of barber colleges in any town or city of less than 100,- 000 population.
