Usually, also avoirdupois. In the wake of the exciting debates and historic vote on the Administration's "tax reform" bill, it is important to realize what is really going on. The startling fact is that, coached by a galaxy of economic theorists fresh from the classroom, this Administration has invoked the controversial principles of the late English economist, John Maynard Keynes. Widely accepted in socialist England, Keynes' theories hold that by monetary manipulation, deficit financing, large-scale public works, and other artificial governmental stimuli a nation can provide "full employment," stabilize the economy, and promote the national and international welfare. Although not admitted, the President's refusal to accept a tax bill amendment which would place a ceiling on federal spending is motivated, primarily, by his belief that there should not be a ceiling on federal expenditures. The importance of the "deficit" in the tax cut program is highly significant. Dr. Walter Heller, the President's chief economic advisor, declared, in effect, that it made no real difference whether we had a tax cut of $11 billion or* increased federal spending by that amount (with taxes remaining at the present level). Dr. Heller states quite frankly: "The deficit is the inevitable part of the stimulus that arises from tax reduction." The paradox of "planned deficits" is this: If we must borrow, from our citizens, an a mount equal to the deficits, how can this provide the "adtihional" funds intended for investment and consumer purchases in the private sector? On the other hand, if an amount equal to this ,deficit-is borrowed from the banks, this results in a greater supply of money not represented by additiona'fciomniodities (i.e., inflation, to the extent of most of the deficit). In the past, the mysterious and deceptive magic of "printing press money" has intrigued (and destroyed) many governments. This nation is now at the crossroads in our history --where we can demonstrate our strength and our restraint. Or, we can follow the "will o' the wisp," seeking an easy way to an easy life. It should be pointed out that the President's economic advisors have outdone Kaynes, who supported deficits in time of depression to be compensated by budget surpluses in time of prosperity. President Kennedy advocates budget deficits, even in times of "prosperity." An $8 fine was imposed on Robert E. Miller of Round Lake for operating an auto with only one headlight. Magistrate Court In the court of Police Magistrate Donald Howard last Thursday evening, an unidentified 16-year-old girl was fined $100 and $10 costs, of which $85 was suspended, for violation of the state curfew. Her name was withheld because she is a juvenile. Paul Lomax of 404 W. North Lake, McHenry, paid a $20 fine for failure to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian. Vernon Thomas of 2614 S. Thomas court, McHenry, was fined $11 for speeding. EDDIE tfce EDUCATOR BOY! AM I GLAD! Qti&oJz&Ujld SHIRT LAUNDRY & DRY CLEANING OPEN FOR BUSINESS (AT THE NATIONAL TEA PARKING LOT) Now!
