McHenry, was graduated Sept. 25 from the eight-week Submarine school at the Suitmarine base, New London, Urol on, Conn. Mock-ups including a fullshe "control room" on gimbals which goes through all the motions of a sub, and practice runs in'Long Island Sound help give the students "the feel of things" so they will not be strangers to a sub upon reporting to one for duty. Graduation from the school us only the beginning of the submariner's education. Some need more detailed instruction in the submarine aspects of their particular work, while others might go directlv from this school to the nuclear-power school. After schooling the submariner miist spend seven months aboard a sub undergoing intensive study before taking his final examination that will win the silver dolphins, emblem of a qualified submariner. "We use our PORCH in any Weather" In rain, wind, snow and dust storms the old-fashioned scieened-in porch is just not practical. But with floor-toceiling DeVAC GlassWalls you have an enclosed porch when the weather turns nasty ... a wide-open porch when It's nice. 0 Thr-- Mporot* tosh panels # Full-length • Fully Gua i REDUCE DANGER TO "GOBLINS" ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT Mrs. Katharine Neumann, Cooperative Extension Service home adviser, shares the following as a timely suggestion to reduce the fire danger for the "Goblins" on Halloween: A flowing witch's robe, hag's hair hanging low across the shoulders and a lighted pum|>- kin grinning its toothless smile into the night. There you have nil the makings for a wonderful night of "tricks or treats" -- but also .just the right combination for a serious fire. Halloween can turn into a real disaster for the child who carelessly carries his lighted pumpkin, holds it loo close to his costume or inadvertently drops it beneath the billowing sheet_pf his fellow ghost. Caution is, of course, the first advice a mother c;m offer. But, according to O. L. Hogsett, University of Illinois extension safety specialist, you can do more than give words of warning. You can make thf costume your child wears flatie resistant not fireproof, mind you, but flame resistant. The U.S. Department, of Agriculture has developed several solutions to treat fabrics so that they won't flash into flame when they come too close to a fire. One of the most flame-resistant solutions contains 7 ount - of borax, 3 ounces Inric at :<l and 2 quarts of hot water. Y u can buy these chemicals n most drug or grocery stores. Commercial grades give as good results as more expensi'• pharmaceut ieal grades. Dissolve boric aci^l by mol ing a paste with a small quantity of water. Add thi.«- and the borax to the water. Stir un'il the solution is dear. Put this solution into a laundry springier and thoroughly dampen your youngster's costume. Do not use on rayon or rescin-treated fabrics. Let the garment nearly dry before ironing. Do not redam|)en with water. Press with moderately iiot iron. Although this treatment will not fire-proof the garment, it will' considerably lessen the danger to your child. Treated materials will char and possibly glow. However, they will not burst into flame. PUBLIC AID ROLLS DECLINE IN STATE FOR FIFTH MONTH HIGHWAY FATALITIES Traffic fatalit'es in Illinois totaled 187 during September, an increase of five deaths over the same month a year ago. According to provisional reports compiled by the Division of Highways and the State Police, the death toll for the first nine months of the year now stands ;ii 1,422, an increase of 8 per cent over (he 1,311 fatalities recon led,, for the same period a vear ago. In August, public aid rolls declined for the fifth successive month, as the loads fell by 289 persons. Harold O. Swank, director, Department of Public Aid, said that a rise in the General Assistance rolls was more than offset by decreases in the other programs. There were 417,124 persons receiving public aid during the month, 20,401 fewer than the August, 1962, caseload of 437,- 525. In July, 1963, 417,413 persons received public aid in the state. The' caseload for McHenry county vi-as as follows: Total, all programs, 661 persons, $27,- 069; old age assistance, 188, .$14,030; aid to dependent children, 160, $5,481; blind assistance, 3, $160; disability assista n c e , 1 4 , $ 7 9 4 ; g e n e r a l assistance, 296, $6,604. S3IOKING HAZARDS Homemakers should set up rigid family smoking rules and see that they are obeyed. The Institute for Safer Living states that thoughtless family and guest smoking habits account for the largest number of residence fires each year. Rules should include no smoking in bed, and safe disposal of cigarettes and matches. SHOP AT HOME AND SAVE Auto Insurance Cancelled?
