Thursday, October 31, 1963 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Pig* Hint Modine Sends McHenry Craftsmenship Around World Expanded Modine Plant This is a view of the Modine plant at McHenry, which has been expanded to some 72,000 square feet of floor space for the manufacture of all aluminum heat transfer products. Heat Exchange Goods Manufactured In Large Local Plant Since 1961 Aluminum's superior qualities for heat exchange applications have won it a prominent and increasingly more important role in the automotive find other industries. The recently expanded Modine Manufacturing Co. plant at McHenry is putting these factors to extensive use in the production of aluminum condenpers for automotive air conditioners and other aluminum heat transfer equipment for the electronic, farm and construction machinery industries. Utilized by internationally known original equipment manufacturers, these aluminum components are helping to spread the reputation of Modine, the world's largest independent manufacturer of automotive radiators and other heat exchange products. Put into operation as a 30,- 000 square foot facility in December of 1961, the McHenry plant has since been expanded to approximately 72,000 square feet and currently employs more than 150 persons, according to Plant Manager A. W. Leafe. Large Payroll Further demonstration of the plant's impact on the economic life of the county is indicated by an annual payroll approaching three quarters of a million dollars and some $10,000 paid each year as county taxes plus a number of state taxes. A run-down on the major customers of Modine will help in understanding how products built in McHenry are circulated to every corner of the country and globe. The aluminum condensers for automobile air conditioners are produced for American Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co., as well as most of the other major independent manufacturers in this field. Various types of engine and compressor oil coolers and electronic coolers -- all of aluminum --• are supplied to other leading manufacturers. A new refrigerant-to-air heat exchanger can be bent, rolled and twisted from a basically flat surface to nearly any shape, from pretzel twists to potato chip wrinkles -- and as a result, can be adapted to a wide variety of end-product space limitations. Other Products Auto manufacturers or independent producers of car air conditioners can now avail themselves of a pr«-chargod aluminum condenser turned out at the McHenry plant. An important space-age market in which the McHenry plant is involved consists of aluminum heat exchangers for miniature electronic components. Used in such devices as radar control systems, these exchangers cool hot semiconductor devices, walnut-sized units each capable of developing 10 watts of power and requiring dissipation of great heat in limited space. The basic power plant radiator is no longer the only heat exchanger on a given piece of equipment. Hydraulic systems, converter transmissions unci power shift gear must also be cooled to maintain long equipment life, maximum operating efficiency and safe operating temperatures. Modine also has developed a standard line of light-weight aluminum exchangers for air cooling of liquids in minimum space. Object to this development is to give a customer a liquid cooler for his special application with a minimum of delay and less cost, since the line will shortly be available from stock, and the customer can build his design requirements around the cooler without having to construct it from scratch. Established Name While relatively new to its McHenry county neighbors, Modine is a well-established name in industry and in addition to the products of its Illinois plant, is a leading manufacturer of commercial and industrial heating and air conditioning equipment and other engine-cooling products and specialized heat transfer equipment. The company has other olants in Paducah, Kentucky, Whittier, California, LaPorte, Indiana, Racine, Wis., and construction of a 100,000 square foot plant in Buena Vista, Va., which will manufacture the Modine line of gas-fired heating products and steam and hot water unit heaters, is virtually complete. Total comsjjjany sales last year were $31,- 000,000. Administrative, engineering, research and marketing headquarters are included in the Racine location. Each of the Modine plants is a self-contained entity devoted to producing a particular portion of the company's diversified lines of heat transfer equipment. Founded In 1916 Modine was founded in June of 1916 by A. B. Modine, who combined a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Michigan with experience in the repair and manufacture of radiators and a lot of ambition, and was the guiding spirit behind the firm's rise to its present prominence in its field. The company's first product was a radiator to cool the jacket water of a tractor engine, while today, its engineers are dealing with a variety of liquids and even liquid metals within a temperature range of 300° below zero to 1500° above zero. A revolutionary radiator design by Modine was so gen- Welding Process AIR CONDITIONING UNIT erally accepted by the automotive industry that by 1918, a licensing and royalty arrangement was established, permitting other radiator manufacturers to use it. Tubular construction design, development of the sectional radiat.gr -- as an offshoot of Modine's "Spirex" radiators used in World War I caterpillar- type artillery tractors, and creation of a hot water car heater design widely used today in most passenger vehicles and buses, were but a few of the innovations Modine gave to the heat exchange field during its progressive history. The forerunner of the unit heater now used in almost every industrial plant in the country, and the modern convector radiator were other design contributions by the company. Modine maintains extensive research, engineering and laboratory facilities, including automotive wind tunnels, in its work toward development of increased efficiency in heat transfer through design improvements. This attitude has kept Modine apace with modern-day needs in the field, which extend beyond heating and cooling of liquids and gases lo the exchange of heat in complex industrial, chemical and nuclear processes, temperature control on jet aircraft and in the cooling of electronic systems. This concept portrays a basic company policy voiced by founder A. B. Modine in January 1917: "We are building our factory around our laboratory," a principle as valid today as it was then. The company's decision to build a separate plant for the fabrication of its all-aluminum products was influenced by the need for critical control of aluminum manufacturing processes. Aluminum processing is not compatible with processing of other metals if high quality product is desired. ' Choose McHenry A major consideration in selecting McHenry county for its new plant location was the necessity of meeting competitive prices in this industry. High labor costs and unfavorable tax structures discouraged Modine from locating in several other areas then under consideration. The McHenry operation also represented a logical growth of the company's midwest facilities from the standpoint of geographical proximity to its headquarters at Racine, allowing convenient access to the company's engineering research and development facilities. Modine has more property adjacent to the present plant for possible further expansion, to keep production facilities abreast of the anticipated increase in demand for aluminum heat exchange products, which are daily gaining more acceptance by industry.
