jfcti • • ' - ~ Page T«i THE McRENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, October 31, 1963 any Advantages Of Community ollege Outlined For Public A public hearing wfll be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at the Woodstock Community high school to discuss the petition requesting the calling of an election on the question of establishment of a junior college school district in McHenry county. The McHenry County Community College committee, which recently completed a survey report, has recommended that an election be held Dec. 14 to vote on the question. Today's article, sixth in a series, outlines some of the advantages of a tw6-year college). What are the advantages of community junior polleges? The principal advantage is obvious--a two-year college provides additional and immediate educational opportunities for all high school graduates in the community at a lower educational cost to dtudents and families. But there are many other advantages usually Overlooked in considering the community college A two-year college can provide terminal programs for those not seeking bachelor degrees and provides opportunities for employed persons to improve their positions in agriculture, business and industry. In the local community, it offers general edycation courses of cultural valua to youths and adults for credit toward degrees in recognized four-year colleges. For the adult interested in selfimprovement, a community college can provide credit and noncredit courses. What about the prdperty owner whose taxes support a community college but who may never take a course? Here it should be pointed that a good community college is equivalent to an industry in the economy of a community because it tends to hold in the area great purchasing power otherwise expended elsewhere.- Community colleges also relieve overcrowding in freshmen and sophomore classes in fouryear colleges and universities. In this conncctlon, it has been pointed out that it will be necessary by 1970 to duplicate existing state university facilities to take care of anticipated enrollment increases. A strong community college" system in the state could reduce somewhat the need for tremendous expansion of existing university facilities. Also a community college can provide many opportunities of cultural interest and value to a community or county. The Office of the State Superintendent: Of Public Instruction recently suggested that new opportunities are opening up for community college to serve in general community improvement and development. Present trends indicate that >a two-year college may help to resolve problems created by increased amounts of leisure time; provide an opportunity for students, faculty and parents to study local community problems; and tend to break down social stratification and provide for a community rather than a class point of view. HOUSEWIFE WINS $8,500 PRIZE ON TELEVISION SHOW Marlon Dillon, a pretty and vivacious Crystal Lake housewife, recently attended a convention in New York with her husband, Harry, who is the business manager for the McHenry Medical Group. The announcement was made by Dr. R. H. Runde, Peoria, president of the Illinois Tuberculosis association. Dr. Runde said, "We are pleased that a young gentlman, a youth leader who will become a leader in his community arid the business world, consented to serve in this capacity. Kent Slater is a fine young man and we are proud to have him leading the 1963 campaign for funds to fight tuberculosis." Slater, in accepting the appointment, pointed out, "There are 450 local F.F.A. chapters Million Dillon denly became a celebrity when she was chosen to be a contestant on a popular television show, "The Price Is Right." On one of the October shows, she was the grand prize winner, a gorgeous Samali Leopard trench coat worth $8,500, and an invitation to return, all expenses paid. At the end of that show, an armed guard accompanied the Dillons and the leopard coat to a cab, telling the driver to lock all the doors and to rush to the airport. The driver must have been nervous, as he became lost in a section of Harlem. They did make the plane, with only minutes to spare, and found that their stewardess was a McHenry girl, Patricia Johnson. Mrs. Dillon missed the big prise on the Oct. 23 show, but did win a beautiful bet of English bone china. Having put the coat safely in a vault, she will try to settle down to her domestic duties, remembering always her exciting experiences in "show business." BORDEN ANNOUNCES PLANS FOB NEW COUNTY PLANT with a total membership of over 15,700 Each chapter has a program of eight distinct categories, one of which is community service." The Christmas Seal campaign of the McHenry County Tuberculosis association officially opens Nov. 13. Christmas Seals will be mailed to over 25,000 homesy industries and business. The Borden Company last Thursday announced plans for a six million dollar project that will include construction of a new fluid milk processing and packing plant and several new distribution locations. The new plant, to be located in Woodstock, will be the largest, most modern fluid milk plant in the country, according to O. N. Koenig, chairman of Borden's central division. The new distribution locations will be situated throughout the Greater Chicago Metropolitan area. Situated on a 35-acre plot of land just off highway 14 bypass, the "Dairy Showcase" will have a capacity for receiving and handling more than two million pounds of fluid milk per day. The one-level plant will be constructed of brick and tile, and will feature the most modern equipment and methods of handling, packaging and distribution. Milk for the new plant will come from several hundred outstanding milk producing farms in the northern Illinois and Woodstock area. Additionally needed milk will be obtained from Southern Wisconsin milk producing farms.
