CHURCH TO KEYNOTE DINNER FOR SENATOR Marguerite Stitt Church will keynote the recognition dinner for State Senator Robert Coulson on Nov. 16, to be held at the Illinois beach state park lodge, according to an announcement made by the committee of friends who formed together to sponsor this recognition. Senator Coulson was cited by the committee as a man of many talents. As an author, two Encyclopedias Commissioned Bob Coulson to write their sections on city government and that more than fifteen college textbooks contain chapters on government and literature written by him. Many magazines have published his articles on Juvenile Delinquency, a subject which has won him national acclaim as an expert when he prepared various studies for the national conference of Juvenile Agents and the National Prison Association. , Reservations may be obtained by writing Coulson dinner committee, 1701 Jenkinson Court, Waukegan, or by phoning Waukegan, at Ontario 2-8583. COUNTY MERITS AUDITOR In a statement Monday by Atty. Gen. William G. Clark, he said that McHenry county should nominate and elect a county auditor. This is in accordance with a state ruling that the office is created in counties with less than 500,000 and over 75,000 population. There is no exception. FIGHT MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY The apparent "thaw" "cold war" has added to the problems of the members of Congress and has built up a new "cold front" between the White House and Capitol Hill. The problems began at the moment Under Secretary of State Averell Harrimdn raced to Moscow to sign the partial nuclear test ban treaty. Members of Congress were surprised when they learned that the long sought after on-site inspections were to be abandoned, as were all other demands for concessions from the Soviets. Many members of the House of Representatives expressed themselves emphatically on the subject, as they explained to unhappy constituents that the United States Representatives have no opportunity to vote on treaties with foreign nations. After weeks of hearings by the Senate, £0 Senators went along with the treaty--as a "first step toward peace," and for whatever the treaty may be worth. Later, when the Soviet wh^at deal wns first suggested, Republican members of the House pressed for the reactivation of a special House Committee on Export Control. This legislative committee had counseled^ with the executive on exports'of goods and materials to Soviet-bloc nations, but its authority had expired at the end of 1961. Despite the demands of the Republicans for a congressional review of exports which might strengthen our enemies in the cold war, the 'gigantic deal to sell wheat to Russia was announced as a "fait accompli." The "most favored nation" price, at which the Soviets are acquiring 150 million bushels of American wheat, has raised protests throughout the land-- including protests from many who reside in our Congressional district of Lake, McHenry and Boone counties. Even those who do not protest the entire deal ask why our nation should not demand full value, as well as some reasorfeble "quid pro quo," such as removal from Cuba of the "Russian technicians," or dismantling of the Berlin Wall, or elimination of some other Soviet insult if there is an actual "thaw" in the cold war. Further Congressional action-- NEW CAR? BANK RATES Are Lower The SANDRA EVANS School of Music Now Offers Piano and Organ Instruction in the McHenry Area Popular and Classical Reasonable Rates PHONE 312 OLiver 8-4471 aimed at limiting future sales of wheat or other commodities to the Soviet-bloc--should sur? prise no one. But the real "shocker" which reverberated in the halls of Congress came when the President invited the Soviets to join our nation in a program to "reach the moon." While the Soviets have remained typically silent, the Congress raised its voice by amending the appropriation bill of the Space Agency, to provide that "no part of any appropriation made available to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration ... shall be used for... a manned lunar landing to be carried out jointly by the United States and any Communist, Communist-controlled, or Communist- dominated country, or for any expenses of any aeronautical ana space activities ... which are primarily designed to facilitate or prepare for participation in such a joint manned lunar landing." One very obvious reason for the Congressional action is that a high percentage of our nation's research in outer space is "classified" information. In addition, our accomplishments have military significance which it would be foolhardy to turn over to our potential enemies. Most members of Congress regard the Soviet naticn and its satellites very warily, despite Averell Harriman's apparent confidenpe in their good intentions. Until the President and the State department have secured agreement from Krushchev to (1) remove the Berlin Wall and (2) to remove Soviet troops from Cuba, the Congress will treat any further thaw in the cold war with the gravest apprehension, and the "cold front" between the White House and the Congress is bound to remain. Often these days the public is informed of the irresponsibility of young people, and for this reason the community can be justifiably proud of a group of young boys who have undertaken a most worthy project.
