d Thursday, December 19, 1963 THE McHENRY PLAINDEAJLER Page Thirteen Approach Of Holy Season Is Reminder For Family Worship The month of December reminds us that except for some special religious holidays, many parents still drive their children up to the doors of churches, deposit them on the sidewalk and then head home to indulge in another forty winks or a section of the morning paper. It has long been puzzling how parents can reason that it's good for the youngsters, but not necessary for them, especially when all indications point to the fact that in case where there is worship together, happier families result and form the basis for better community. A report of special interest comes from Juvenile Judge Sam Tatum of Nashville, Tenn., who tells that of 46,000 juvenile cases he tried in court over a period of twenty-five years, only one family in every 2,700 problem cases attended religious classes or worshipped together as a family. Just seventeen families who took worship seriously were involved in all of the 46,000 trials. " „ As the very holy spirit of Christmas approaches, it would do well to ponder these statistics. Look Forward To Twenty-Fifth Farm Sports Festival In State Next year will mark the twenty-fifth for the Illinois Farm Sports Festival, commonly referred to as the world's largest rural sports event. It was started in 1936 and has been held annually except for. four years during World War II. The festival is sponsored by the Illinois Agricultural association and ninety-nine Farm Bureaus. One of the major changes in the 1964 festival program of interest locally concerns the district young people's talent find contest. Usually held in late August, it has been re-scheduled to coincide with the Illinois State Fair and will be held on the state fairgrounds on agricultural day. Another change involves the addition of the thirteenth event in bowling for men 65 years and over. Each year this spectacular sports festival draws more than 10,000 rural Illinois men, women and children as participants. One of the fastest growing events in the program -- bowling -- brings about 5,000 contestants into county, regional and state competition. Here is wholesome entertainment at its best, enhanced by the spirit of competition for those of all ages. TOY BUYING IS OPPORTUNITY TO DELIGHT KIDDIES Whether you are a parent, a relative, or just a friend of the family, shopping for toys is an opportunity to provide the children on your list with lasting benefits, as well as immediate delight. A child's toys contribute largely to his development and should b^ selected to fit that development at any given stage. Day by day a child grows. Different abilities develop. Skills increase. Interests broaden. Play which at first is largely individual becomes more social. Toys should be selected with all of these things in mind. From infancy to two years the baby needs brightly colored, lightweight toys of varied textures. They should be washable, too big for him to swalworn I by Moggie Lovewell I low, and free of sharp corners or rough edges. He will enjoy feeling, patting and hugging soft stuffed animals and dolls. He likes bright balloons to look at and reach for. Balls and push and pull toys will be of interest as he begins to creep and then to walk and run. Blocks to handle, then to carry around and finally to pile on top of another will provide for absorbing activity. All kinds of toys to take apart and fit together are enjoyed. Strings of beads, which he can bite and shake will be welcomed; bath toys of rubber, plastic or wood will be popular. Playthings with which he can pound and bang and sand toys with which to dig and pour are basic play favorites. Rattles and chime toys will be enjoyed. Picture books about animals and children and familiar objects have great appeal. FABBIC SOFTENERS ARE GREAT if used right -- make clothes so soft and fluffy and easier to iron, especially towels, corduroys, cotton knits, diapers. Also reduces static electricity in synthetics. It's important to add softener to last rinse only--never to water with bleach or detergent. Use right nmount per load as marked on bottle--too much will lower fabric ^ absorbency. Caution: Don't confuse with water softeners. They don't do the same thing. Don't use face powder if your SKIN IS ROUGH AND DRY-- until complexion regains some of the oils lost to the hot summer sun. (Try liquid or cream foundation; also washing face with creamy lotion should help). You should be more careful buying SHOES FOR YOUR CHILDREN than any other item in their wardrobe. The wrong size can cav.se temporary, even permanent, discomfort. Until child is 8 years, size changes about eveiy 3 months; then check size every 6 months. So always have the kids along and measure their feet (except when buying boots, so long as you have one of their current shoes with you for size). Buy only the size they need--no other. How much you pay for shoes is not important --just as long as they fit properly. As far as styles go, avoid pointed toes, and never get arch supports unless your doctor specifically recommends them. Try to keep the kids from wearing sneakers for more than several hours at a time. They just can't give enough support over long periods. When WAX POLISH LOOKS STIJEAKY on your furniture, use mild soap and lukewarm water to remove the old wax that's been collecting dirt. Rinse soap right off and repolish or re-wax immediately.
