*7 Thursday, December 19. 1963 THE McHENHT PLAINDEALER McCullom Laki ANTICIPATED ROAD CHANGE CANCELLED BY VILLAGE BOARD Eve A plan submitted to the village board to vacate gate one and move that road about ninety feet to the west was rejected by the trustees at the. last meeting held Monday. Dec. 9, in the beachhouse. Four trustees voted aye to abandon the plan and one trustee passed. Since there was no tie vote, it was not necessary for President Levesque to vote. When the financial report was made by chairman Bill Creutz, it was noted that the village is now operating in the "black" for the first time since the incorporation! Barring an excessive snow fall this season, or any other heavy expenditure, no tax anticipation warrant will be issued. The village also has in excess of $10,000 accrued motor fuel tax funds in Springfield which can be used for improvement or rebuilding of arterial streets. The number of arterial streets will also be increased in the near future. The police report was made by Sergeant Earl H. Murray in the absence of police chief Jack Schlofner. Because of the holidays, there will be NO meeting of the village officials on Monday, Dec. 23, and the next one will be held Monday, Jan. 13, 1964 at 8 p.m. in the beachhouse. Tickets For Bus Violations The problem of our school children boarding the buses on the highway has been one of great concern for our village officials, the police department, and many parents. The youngsters do not realize the danger of darting into the streets, and one foggy morning was especially hazardous. That problem is being dealt with, but in the meantime, drivers are cautioned to use lower speeds at the vulnerable hours--from 7:20 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and also between 3 and 4 in the afternoon. The buses stop at gates 6, 4, and 2 and many drivers were ticketed last week for speeding or passing stopped school vehicles. Personal Appearance for Santa Tomorrow The Cullom-Knoll Association will host a Christmas party for the local small fry tomorrow night in the beachhouse starting at 7 30 p.m. Santa Claus will be on hand to greet the kiddies and give them a "goody" stocking. Allen McKim and Rich Johnson will give the "jolly fellow" a helping hand. The party is for girls and boys up to age 12. Gals Will Fete Vol© Season Gaily trimmed in the traditional theme, the Earl Nelson basement will be an inviting place thiis evening (Dec. 19) when members of the Ladies of the Lake gather for their annual Christmas party. A committee headed by Marge Olsen has been busy with crepe paper, a Christmas party tree, and other suitable "fol-de-rol" enhancing the surroundings for a gala party. The menu sounds sumptious and there are games on the schedule. Each women is asked to bring a one' dollar exchange gift and some of the presents will be lovely while others will cause squeals of merriment. The party shows promise of being very festive and certainly none of our ladies will wish to be absent. Please let us have your holiday plans and other pertinent material. Bill Walter "Tops" With Small Fry We think this is the sixth year that great guy Bill Walter has taken on the problems connected with transporting fifteen young children under the age of 10 to Chicago to see Santa Claus. Ranking at the top of the list of great guys also is his buddy Ole Olsen who has accompanied him and the wee ones on several expeditions, including this year. The men "pick up the tab" for the trip, escort the children on the train and give them breakfast upon their arrival in the big city. Then all troops march eastward to visit the two stores most noted for their gala displays. A restaurant in thearea is alerted and perpared to serve fifteen hungry (and weary) children and three adults. The favorite fare is hamburgers and fries, natch! All this has consumed a great deal of time and this year, it was a bit of a rush to make the return train that arrives locally at 2:45 p.m. Bill and Ole had reinforcements in the lovely personage of Diane Bjork but that still makes five kiddies apiece for which to account! The lucky youngsters on this year's list included Dawn and Kevin Ingersol; J. R., Bruce, and Curt (Dinky) Walter; Margie Olsen; Janet and Brad Whitney; Donny Burg; I^aurene and Dorene Vycital; Peggy and Steve O'Halleran; and our own DeeDee and Matt Levesque. All proceeded according to schedule and Bill has one entire year to recuperate for nexj.. year! I IOWA •. andlMrs. Jr., and Sad Journey To Dewey Fricke, Mr, Karl Blum, Karl, Dewey's sister-in-law motored to Iowa last week to attend the funeral services for a beloved relative. Deserve Honorable Mention We can think of no more horrible reason for displaying our beloved flag than the untimely and ghostly death of our president, but during the 30 day period of mourning, Mrs. Elma Nelson has faithfully raised and then lowered to half mast--our banner of freedom in the memorial park at the beach. She is also responsible for removing it in the evening. On very few occasions when Elma has not been available at the proper time, son Don has assisted. They have battled snow and extreme cold'to complete their mission. On the anniversary of the death of Jim Tomasello Dec. 2, the Mary Tomasello family raised its own banner. We think these facts should be noted. nine month old Bobby. The two older ones will certainly retain many of their memories. This is a combination vacation trip and honeymoon--the first in five years! Better late than never. We shall have many more details upon their return in January. Verbal Orchids To A Great Gal After witnessing the spectacular Christmas program staged by the McHenry high school choral group, Sunday night we are once again astounded at the many talents of this gal -- Adele Froelich, the editor of the Plaindealer. She takes these young voices, mostly untrained, and molds the entire group into a pattern of heart rending musical quality that is unsurpassed. Her ability to direct and put together a show* of this caliber deserves a standing ovation. Miss Froehlich was inordinately touched by the show of devotion from her young singers when she was presented with a beautiful bouquet of red roses and a gift. Those who participated locally include Jim Morris (I'm Joe), Lynne Schultz, Chrys and J.R. Levesque, Janet Han- Christmas In Germany For Legler Family A memorable journey by air was started for the Fred Legler family, last Saturday. They left O'Hare field for the first leg of their trip which was to fly over the Atlantic to the land of Helga and Fred's birth. They will spend the holidays with Fred's parents who live there and also revisit Helga's relatives. Her parents reside in Holiday Hills. Accompanying the couple are their three kiddies-- Lee, 5--Chrissy, 3--and BEST WISHES FOR Christmas o all our good friends, the very happiest of holidays. McHENRY CAB Cabs Not Operating Christmas Day 6 New Year's Day sen, and Louise Matthesius. Hope we didn't miss any one. Singing Parks Family Special mention must be made of the singing Parks family of West Shore Beach. Two talented lads -Lance, Jr., and Ed made their mark in the vocal (and scholastic!) department before they graduated. Gail lends her lovely voice to the choral g|pup and brother Ron did k magnificent job of the solo-- "Sweet Little Jesus Boy." There are younger children in the grade school so it will be many, years before this family fades from the limelight! Another lovely young lady from the community to the west of us who proved her vocal talent is Eileen Homo. She, too, will no doubt have a musical career! Another Contribution To The "Matrimonial Frultbasket" Dorothy and John Cunningham who resided here for many years and have moved to Cooney Heights welcomed another daughter, Patricia Ruth, Dec. 8. The wee one was born in McHenry hospital and joins a family populated with two sisters and two brothers. John is still employed here In the village. "Stole American Indian" This was a game taught to me by my older brothers and means bearing pain without any show or outcry. Linda Kcmmer 12, deserves the title for her behavior when she fell and broke her arm during a physical education exercise last week. She was rushed to McHenry hospital where the left arm was x-rayed and put in cast. She remained over night and returned to school two days later. She will be without the use of the arm for six weeks. Mother Betty and Daddy Warren were extremely prcud of their young miss when she uttered not pne word of complaint and didn't shed a tear! Glee At Chum's Expense Ed Pieroni was the unwitting performer at his stag birthday party last Thursday night. The act was witnessed by Fred Matthesius, Joe Frett, and Ed Peisert. It seems as though the three presented the "birthday boy" with a nice cake AND candle, at a local bistro. When the guest of honor tried to blow out the flame, it popped right back on again. Ed didn't catch on to the gag and made about 5 or 6 tries. In sheer disgust, he picked up the candle and drowned same in his coffee cup! Doesn't this present a vivid mental picture? According to Fred, Ed's birth didn't have the proper chemical components! Orchid Occasions Belated greetings to wee Janet Marie Michels who turned 1 last Friday, Dec. 13...
