Mary Loo Hartog ' Because of the tragic fire in • our beautiful Church last week there will be no weekday Masses except Saturday. We can be thankful that the • church was not completely destroyed. Much credit goes to our alert maintenance crew headed by Thomas West and to our volunteer firemen/ Our deepest gratitude to them and to the sacristans and all others who are helping with the cleanup work. As announced last week, His Excellency Bishop Lane will be at our church to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation on Monday evening, Jan. 27 at ' 7:30 p.m. All arrangements are in the hands of Sister Mary Phillip and Mrs. Bird and her staff. Jan. 9 honoring Mrs. Howard Dermont (Joan' Biggers) at the home of her sister, Gloria Freund, at 7619 Hickory Road Friends and relatives from Woodstock, Wonder* Lake and Algonquin attended and Joan received many lovely^gifts including an Early Ameriman high chair to match the decor of the rest of the home. Jean and Howie live at 7909 W. Chestnut Drive. They have been married since October of 1942 and are expecting their first child ,the latter part of this month. Our best wishes to this Wonderful couple and a "Happy Baby to" You." Catholic Women's Bridge Club The W.T-. Catholic Women's Bridge Club met at the home of Betty Selsdorf last week. High player was Mary Ann Cri.sty and low was Harriet McCall. Other players were: Alice Condren, Pat Wrede, Jean Hartmcn Marie Shrosbrce and Joanne Higgins. Hostess served dessert and coffee. Millie Kersten will be hostess to the club next month. The Wonder Lakt ^ Garden Club News The Garden Club meeting held on Thursday, Jan. 9, at the home of Mrs. R. J. Wielock, 7616 Orchard drive Wonder Lake, proved to be a very interesting evening all around. The roll call "How I attract the birds to my yard" was answered by the following members - Mesdames Carder, Condren, Gillette, Hoppe, Johnso'h, McKachron, Nelson, Ottoson and Wielock. Most all of our members have bird houses and feeders in their yards and it was quite interesting to hear of the various foods offered to our fine feathered friends. We also found out from Mrs. Wielock how to. keep the squirrels away from the bird feeders arid how nature provides a means to allow the birds to stay on their perches and branches while asleep. Several points of interest cr.rfie about in our order of business and also on the forth coming flower show at McCormack Place in March. This was taken care of to the satisfaction of both the members and our president. Mrs. Carder mentioned that sevaral people have made very good and favorable remarks on the arrangements which are and have been in the main part of the post office and these remarks are the ones we like to hear to give us encouragement to further^our project. Our heartfelt thanks go to those who have been nice enough to notice and to say so. After some "YUMMY" refreshments we ventured out Into the wind and cold cars to head for home. Nativity Lutheran Church News Next Sunday at 6 p.m. will be the annual meeting of the congregation, for all confirmed members. This meeting, the Nativity Mates will meet briefly to elect their 1964 officers. Teacher Training class will be held Monday at 1 p.m. On Wednesday at 4:30-Junior Catechism classes will be held. Thursday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. - Youth choir rehearsal, 8 p.m. Senior choir rehearsal. Pink and Blue Shower for Jonn A beautiful pink and blue shower was given last week Lucky Folks Leave for Warmer Climes Marge Wunderlich who left for California last week for a month or so and William Brown who left on Tuesday for Florida and Points beyond were among the fortunate folks who shake the snow of Wonder Lake from their heels and h§ad for the sunshine for the winter. There are probably quite a few others but they probably took off when I wasn't looking. I suppose someone has to tend the store but I know if everyone felt as I do about snow and winter - the whole area would be absolutely deserted from Nov. 1 to May 1. Maybe someday I'll make it but meantime I'll just keep envying those folks who do go. If you know of some folks who are having winter vacations - why not tell me about it so I can talk about it arjd feel bad. ^ Kiwanis News - Meeting of January 6, 1964 We had as guests Frank Gregory, president of the Mc- Henry Kiwanis Club and Carl Reyman. Frank invited our club to attend the installation of the officers of the McHenry Club on Saturday at the American Legion Home in McHenry..Our club sent a delegation of five members and their wives. Our Battle Axe award winner was Ed Johnson. The program next week will be put on by Jim Robison, and will show slides on the McHenry County Retarded Children's school in which this club has been vitally interested. The Christmgfi tree burning sponsored by the Wonder Lake Chamber of Commerce and helped by the Kiwanis Club, was held on Jan. 5 on the ice in front of Art LaGreca's. Numerous children turned out although the total number of trees was less than expected. Dr. Ruggero was chairman of this event. Pastor Thummel spoke briefly on the origin of the Twelfth Day after Christmas, the Epiphany. The Wonder Lake Fire Department had men on hand to conduct the burning. The original intention was to hold this cn the lake in front of the Wonder Center Beach - and it was stated so in the papers. The president of Wonder Center subdivision was contacted verbally on Dec. 23, but it wasn't until Jan. 4 that we were notified the beach would not be available, and extra padlocks were put on the gates. From the comments and interest of spectators it was decided that this will be an annual event with more publicity before the event. Other discussion at the meeting was the false alarms sent into the Wonder Lake fire department Sunday. These false alarms kept the department on the alert and out most of last Sunday. At the time of this writing it is felt that a young boy and girl were responsible for this. The fire department will have more to say 'about this later. Pistakee Terrace ASSOCIATION ASKS PAYMENT OF btJES TO HELP BUDGET Joyce Toepper -- 885-3044 sociation president or your columnist. The Pistakee Terrace association held its first meeting for 1964 on Monday evening, Jan. 6. Although it is recognizable that mid-winter is a slow time of the year and; no doubt kept members from attending the meeting it does not givs the officers 6£ your association much incentive when you show no interest. With the approach of the holidays it seems dues have slacked off and the treasury is no where close to the estimated budget. It is in your hands entirely as to how much the association can do for the good of our subdivision. Please send complete or partial payment now to Pistakee Terrace Association, 1102 W. Elder Avenue, McHenry, 111. The only new business concerned a letter from the Fox Valley Conservancy District asking our cooperation along with the surrounding area in1 clearing up the water problem on the Fox River this summer. Everyone agreed we should do what we can but at present there is no volunteer to represent the Terrace at any of the District meetings. Anyone caring to work with the Conservancy please contact the as- Women'g Auxiliary Looking for Projects At the January meeting of the Pistakee Terrace Women's auxiliary the girls tossed around ideas for moneV making projects to be held this spring and summer, Although an annual dance is usually held in May each year and.has always been one of the biggest profits of any projects there was no one at the meeting willing to assume the chairmanship. Workers seemed available as did supporters however many of these women have been chairman of the dance or other auxiliary projects of late and feel someone else should take a turn. Anyone interested please contact auxiliary chairman, Eleanor Moore, for details as to the extent of work required. Maybe a co-chairmanship could be found if nothing else. If there is no dance maybe there will be some suggestions for other1 fund-raising projects. Any ideas gratefully received. Reports were gitfen by the cookbook committee who will begin working later this month and the come-as-you-are-breakfast to be held sometime in January. Wonder how many of you. are getting dressed earlier these days or better still how many of you don't answer the door until you are dressed? Don't forget it may be cold out there waiting so' make it speedy. Mary Mecko has asked that you be reminded that she is accepting our coupons to be traded in for future use. No one has gotten any to her yet. Let's remedy this now.
