Pag* Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday. Juno 14, 1962 SO I HEAR... McHenry's City Council recently named our athletic grounds and ball diamond "A. P. Freund Field" in memory of the man who had the foresight to set aside this area when he planned a subdivision. Next Sunday at 1:45 p.m. a sjiort ceremony will be held to dedicate the grounds to the memory of "Tony". We hope many of you will be present for this occasion. Following 7the program, you will see the up and coming Shamrocks play Dundee. It would be nice to see you. At this writing the box score on the Shamrock-Richmond game has not been turned in. Hear the home boys beat Richmond and were real happy over the victory. One observer decided that just about the time you teach your kids you can't pirtmore in a container than 'it can hold, along comes some woman in slacks. Would like to rent a car from Hertz some time, but worry about the way they drop you into the car in those TV ads. Pickups -- Isn't it terrible how close some motorists drive ahead of you? Incurable horse player: "I hope I break even today -- I sure could use the money." We know a person who doesn't have many faults -- but he sure makes the most of the ones he does have. The cooing usually stops but the billing goes on forever. Keep smiling. It makes folks wonder what you have been up to. If these baseball brawls keep up, they may as well furnish the players with boxing gloves and turn the bats over to the boys in the boxing ring. LEGION NINE BEATS UNION 6-1; WONDER LAKE HERE SUNDAY McHenry's American Legion team" defeated Union bj^ a score of 6 to 1 last Sunday. Winning pitcher, Vern Petersen, went all the way for the victory. He fanned 9, walked 5, and allowed but 1 hit. Lloyd Smith halted two Union rallies by picking men off first base. Johnny Hiller starred on offense as he drove in two runs with a double, walked twice, and stole a base. Wo&aJL. Shamrocks Beat Richmond 3-1 On Benson's A The legion team plays Wonder Lake next Sunday on the varsity diamond at McCracken Field. Game time is 1:45. Come on out and brins some friends. It is a wonderful opportunity to get some sun and se^a good baseball game. McHenry (6) AB R Hiller 2 Himpleman 2 The Shamrocks beat Richmond on the home diamond last Sunday 3-1. It was Roger Benson's great job of pitching that turned the trick for the Shamrocks. He allowed only 4 hitSj and 4 walks, as he pitched the complete nine innings. Roger was in trouble only twice, in the first inning two errors put a man on third and a two out single by Richie Miller scored Richmond's only run. jrn the sixth, a walk and a single .put men on first and second^ with one out. Then a snappy double play, Klapperich to Bujak to Petersen, ended that threat. McHenry scored in the first on a hit by Klapperich, a H walk to Tinder, and a single New kirk Farr Funk • • Schmidt Petersen Fletcher 2 Smith Fino •. Our robins brought back all their cousins from the south and now outnumber the cherries. Wouldn't it be fun to see the Cubs play the White Sox in a World Series, We can dream, can't < we? The Giants hit. the skids for a few games, but Charlie Hiller kept on bringing his batting average up a notch. It's an off day when Charlie doesn't either start or act as middle man on a double play. Our chief,, helper, Marie says she turns to the Giants' box score the first thing when the morning paper arrives. Tony Espey's name shows up again in sports. This time Tony set a new school record at Whitewater State, taking the 7Q yard high hurdles in 9.8 seconds. In the second Mc- Auliffe was hit by a pitch, went to third on a single by Petersen, and scored on a hit to left by Benson. In the sixth Paul Morenz led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, went to third on an infield out, and then stole home on a beautifully executed play. The team really looks sharp this year, with their newNynit'orms. The ball diamond also looks in great shape, with the new grass infield. Come out and see the boys play if youf get a chance. Next Sunday Dundee will be at McHenry. and Gary Peters, the North Suburban Conference's leading pitcher, will probably pitch for Dundee. We watched him step up with that dusty driver and whale the daylights out of the ball. He is the only man I have seen this year knock a ball atp least 400 yards in three shots and still be only 75 yards from the tee. This is not too bad though,, when you consider the antics of Lou Consago and Ray Johnson on the 10th. Both had a 10 handicap, both had a stroke coming, both- lost I he hole. Reascjn -- both had a 10. There were some fine shots made by these men, too, and probably by a lot more men that this column will not hear about unless they use the news box. One of these fine shots was made by V. Weyland on the 14th by pitching one from way out in right field into the cup for a deuce. Our 70 shooters this Sunday were; Ed Buss, 75; P. Overton, 77; R. Freund, 78; A. Jackson, 78; and F. Johnson, 79. Winners this week in the directors tournament were; Class A: P. Overton over E. Seepe; Consago over J. Moss; J. Varese over R. Johnson iipth), and T. Evans over W. Weber. Class B: Bishoff over D. Weber; J. Thies over R. Hughes; Sigman over G Rink; and J. Phelan over Baker. Going into the semi-finals will pit L. Consago against P. Overton and J. Varese against T. Evans, in class A. Bishoff against J. Thies and Sigman against J. Phelan in Class B. Winners of low net were: 1-9, E. Buss, 75-3-72; F. Johnson, 79-7-72; Dick Freund, 78- 6-72. Low net, 10-14; W. Kadisak, 83-11-72; J. Phelan, 87- 14-73; D. Weber, 86-12-74; T. Evans, 85-11-74; R. Johnson, 84-10-74; Low net 15-up; J. Thies, 86-15-71; D. Hester, 86- 15-71; R. Weyland, 90-17-T3. The Games Committee wishes to inject a little thought: Let's all start thinking about Hookey Day this July 18th. BOB BECKENBAUGH WINS CHICK EVANS GOLF SCHOLARSHIP Now, they say you can learn to play golf by listening tc the radio. Sounds like making love by phone, but they say the idea is working. Ron Somers, golf pro at Pistakee Country Club, has the "Tee-Time" show on a Skokie station at 7:30 Friday nights. McHenry's Jim Umbarger won first place m the Class G outboard marathon in Detroit recently. Three Switzer Craft boats were winners in this tough competition. Congratulations to Jim and the Switzer family. Local people are working hard on plans for the Marian Central Parents dinner dance to be held at the McHenry V. F. W. June 26 and they have asked us tori give the event a mention, very glad to do so. We attended the get-together last year and had a real sociable time. Proceeds benefit the Knights of Columbus of Crystal Lake, sponsors of the event. Little League Notes I^ain curtailed the Little League schedule last week-end with only one game being played in the majors. Keith Mereness pitched a one hit shut out and struck out fourteen as John Woodbury's two hits paced the Owls to a 13-0 win over the Falcons. The minor Falcons rallied to tie the Owls 10-10 in spite of eleven strike outs by Lloyd Simon. The Falcon infield of Jim Fultz, Bob Rodenkirch, Steve Rohrer and Tim LaFontaine stood out in this game. Miniature League Shut outs were the order of Jhe day as the miniature league opened the season with three games. Sox pitcher, Kevin Riordan, struck out the side with ten pitches in the opening inning and combined with Gary Harrison and Greg Freund to shut out the Braves 8-0. Mark Adams hurled shut out ball as the Cubs beat the Yankees 6-0. Brad Shelton and Howie Parth stood out on defense and Glen Brittain pitched excellent ball as the Tigers beat the Indians 15-0. Ladies Auxiliary The ladies, under the excellent management of Dolores Blake and Frances Larson, have operated the refreshment stand at the park for the last several seasons. Each mother is expected to help at least once during the season. This year the auxiliary purchased new batting helmets for the league. The helmets provide complete protection for the batter and base runners and are used by all three leagues. PONY LEAGUE The McHenry Pony League has set next Sunday, June 17, as grand opening date for the 1962 season. Louis Swedo, new president of the league, has been very active with the group in getting the diamond ready for a successful season. At 12:45 next Sunday, the teams, managers and coachap will be introduced. The V.F.wJ. will assist in the flag raising, then the first of two games will get under way. It is sincerely hoped that parents and friends of youth activities will be present to start the season in a successful manner.
