THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, June 11, 1964 SO I HEAR ... Should have written this column last night but fell asleep irt our easy chair and nobody could break through the sound waves of our snoring to awaken us. Here is a nice report on one of our local boys, who seems . to be a chip off the old block with a golf club in his hajids: 6-4-64 Dear Sir, I would-like to inform the people of McHenry that GARY ADAMS was voted again this year as Milton, College's Golfer of the year. Gary was also selected to a greater award, that of Spring Athlete of the year. He won this award for Sportsmanship, leadership and excelling in his particular sport. Plus, Gary was elected as Captain of the golf team in 1965. He was captain this year. JERRY WARNER. Milton, Wis. Tigers Score 7 In First To Top Dundee 12 To 8 You sports fans have a busy weekend coming up. Saturday night you have the big wrestling show at McCracken Field, sponsored by McHenry's American Legion Post No. 491. On Sunday, you may have to spread yourself kinda thin. Little League has a special program. Joe Stanek's Legion ball team plays at home on the A. P. Freund Athletic Field. Another big sport event is the McHenry Shamrock invasion of Johnsburg. The Tigers are tough this year, but the Shamrocks have new life. We hope it is a close battle. While all these events are going on, some will be playing golf, some will be on the tennis courts, some will take to water sports and some will be enjoying something stronger than Water for sports. « McHenry is a busy place. For those who say there is nothing to do, just look around. After working on all kinds of fund raising drives for many years, we thought it time to iay no. But, along came the •Cancer Drive and something Sit us that wouldn't allow us to ' sit back. If you and I can take some small part in fighting this terrible disease that hits most families, it seems we should come through. We have sent letters to all .business places, with return envelopes. It has been gratifying to see the results. For those who set those envelopes aside, please send them in right away. The ladies did a bang-up job in the residential areas. Sure. There are too many drives, We should know. Nobody forgets us. But, we can't back up in the fight against cancer. Stock car races continue to "draw many spectators from this area. They love that slam-bang- "crash. - Coe College out Iowa way lists McHenry's John Reese as a freshman numeral winner in "baseball. Nice going, John. The _Johnsburg Tigers continued their winning ways as far as the McHenry County League is concerned. Johnsburg scored seven times in the first inning and led all the way to defeat Dundee 12 to 8 last Sunday on the Dundee diamond. The Tigers blasted Dundee pitching for 15 hits. Jack Schaefer led the attack with 3 hits. Harry May, Paul 'Morenz and Ed Mack had 2 hits each. For Dundee, Denninger and Hopp had home runs and Lewin had four hits in five trips to the plate. Mack started for the Tigers and won his' ihird straight against no losses. Ted Freund pitched the last 4 innings and managed to protect the Tigers' early lead. A special note to each little leaguers mother: Please avail upon yourself to donate at least one nite or afternoon, during the remaining baseball season, to work in the refreshment stand. Mrs. Otto Larson has been over the years and again this year doing an outstanding job in keeping the stand operating. It is unfair to expect one person to carry the burden alone. All of the boys playing little league baseball are the benefactors. The funds raised by the stand, are donated to the league to be used for special acquisitions, and in many cases to help pay the normal bills. The new lights and poles being dedicated next Sunday are examples of what happens with the money donated by the stand from the sale of refreshments. If you feel you don't want to work while your son is playing, pick another time. All that is asked is an hour and one half of your time. Come on now Moms, call Mrs. Larson at 678-6138 or sign up at the refreshment stand as soon as possible. Will County Nine Beats Johnsburg Tigers 11 To 8 The Johnsburg Tigers lost their 1st game of the 1964 season, at the hands of the Will County Athletics. Johnsburg jumped off to a 1 to 0 lead in the first inning, but in the second inning the Athletics took a 3 to 1 lead and were never headed. The Tigers staged a late rally in the eighth inning, tout it wasn't quite enough to "overcome Will County's 8 run lead. Johnsburg scored five times on 8 walks and a double by Lloyd Smith. The Tigers received a total of 17 walks, but failed to capitalize on many scbring opportunities. In attendance at the game were scouts from four major league teams--The New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels and Chicago White Sox. Johnsburg (8) AB R H J. Schaefer 3 2 0 H. May 3 1 0 T. Our boys outhit Elgin 12 to 11, but Elgin had two 4-run innings which really settled the game. Not one of these runs was earned. AME LEGION by VERONA KENT Neither gusty winds nor 90 degree plus temperature discouraged fifty-five DIVOT DOLLS playing golf Tuesday. At times it was difficult keeping ones balance when addressing the ball, but in spite of all this there were some good scores turned in in all classes, and most of us were seen changing our score cards for Ringer. Low net winners include: Class A -- Em Hester and Joan Buss (incidently Joan had a low gross of 93 > Class B -- Betty Phelan and Rita Sayler were tied. Class C- -Nadine Larkin and Gerda Weselius FLAG TOURNAMENT will be on the schedule next week. Teams are being selected by the Games Committe and will appear on the bulletin board. Watch for your tee time! Scores this day will determine qualifying round for MATCH PLAY starting the following week. Lil Stilling played a good round of golf today. She sank a beautiful approach shot on No. 6 and had 8-1 putt greens. How about that for having a bead on the ball? SUMMER SCHOOL Summer school courses at the McHenry high school begin next Monday. The team is shaping up pretty fair. We have trouble with our infield, but the boys are young and just need a little more experience. The hitting is getting better. We've had 25 hits in our last 2 games. We are working on our McHenry Booster Club again this year. It's going to be a little different than other years, so we hope lo get all of McHenry to be McHenry Boosters and join our club. Again, if it would be possible to organize a committee to run the Shamrocks. I would like to know and I'll be happy to assist in any way. Thank you. LOCAL LEGION WRESTUHG SHOW SET FOR SATURDAY NIGHT AT McCRACKEN FIELD Mr. Ed Reid, chairman, announces that the committee for the first wrestling show in McHenry has completed all the arrangements for the big night. McCracken Field is the site; this Saturday, June 13th, is the date; and the time of the first of three matches is 8:30 As announced in the past two weeks, an all-star card has been booked for the show. This includes the best talent available from the current crop of TV wrestlers, as well as a couple that are local celebrities. These are Billy Goelz, well known wrestler who makes his home in near-by Round Lake and Bob Longo, currently a member of the Huntley Police Department. Proof of Poffo Feature bout of the evening will put Angelo Poffo against The Mongol, strong man from Mongolia. Poffo is ready for the match and is capable of stopping the Mongol's brute strength. Proof of his fitness is the fact that he is the world record holder for consecutive sit-ups, 6000. The second of the hour long matches will be a tag-team affair and could be a real donnybrook. Johnny Gilbert and Billy Goelz will take on Nicoli Volkoff and Johnny Kace in a grudge meeting for the Midwest Tag Team Championship. The last time these teams met, the match was declared 'no contest' when they knocked the ring apart with the force of the body slams put on one of the contestants. First match of the evening will be a go between Bob Longo and Farmer Jones, pig raiser from Texas. Bob is new to the wrestling shows in this area but is considered quite a comer. He will have his hands full with Jones, who has developed quite a reputation as the man to beat on the way up. He is a real test for a new man and is known in wrestling circles as a spoiler. Legion Seeks Support The Legion Post is hoping for the support of wrestling fans from all over the area for this card. Some tickets have already been sold to fans from as far away as Chicago and Aurora. "Support of the Wrestling Show is support of the Legion and all of its many activities in McHenry, and in the county," said Mr. Reid. Projects have become increasingly expensive and sources of revenue to support these projects have decreased. This is an attempt to give you something while getting your help. Consult the add appearing elsewhei'e in this paper to find out where you can obtain your tickets. They will also be sold the night of the bout at the field. CITY ORDINANCE A city ordinance provides for cutting weeds on vacant lots. After June 15, owners will be subject to a fine, or weeds will be cut and property owners will bo charged. It is mis-aligned front wheels due to Winter ruts and Spring pot holes. The pothole problem is a temporary one, of course, but it is the grand finale to a torture test you have been giving your car over Winter's ice and ruts. The aftermath can include A JH cut tires and damage to springs, shocks, wheel bearings, tie-rod ends and the whole exhaust system. The best remedy for potholes is to cut your speed so you miss as many as possible. But even though you miss 'em all, you can be sure that the rough roads of Winter have set you up for some major bills in the future, unless you take preventive action now. Failure to correct misalignment can result in rapid and excessive wear to your front tires. We will be glad to check your alignment along with a general examination of your muffler, tail pipe, brakes, etc. Tightening body rattles in a few crucial spots is also a good idea. Winter is tough on shock absorbers and in any once-over they should receive special attention. Like good doctors, our mechanics have no desire to operate unless absolutely neccs- •sap-. If there is nothing wrong, they'll tell you. Brss FORD SALES 8986 W. Mnin Street
