\' - PagftFoufr THE MeHEHSY PLAINDEALES Thursday * June 18# 1964 • ;•:% : Wa/Uh. SO I HEAR... That was the week that was . . . Our White Sox never should have gone near New York. Those d-- (for darn) Yankees rested up all season, then knocked our boys for a loop. The Yankees beat our Sox five straight and our Ol' Buddy A1 Lopez is quoted as saying the Yanks can be beaten. Ya, Al, but when? The man who invented the telephone was no friend of ours on Monday. Heading the list of sympathizers had to be Junior Freund and Herb Reihansperger. First blow, "Where should we send the flowers?" Killing blow, "Would you like to go to the Cub game with us Tuesday." We could only answer that we dfdn't feel strong enough to spend a day with that pair. Oh -- our Sox will bounce back! We have suffered through those setbacks with them before. We don't suffer in silence . . . but, we suffer! Just Jet 'em win a few games and all will be forgiven. We thought there, would be more major league trades before the deadline. Everybody wants to give a bat and a ball and an old pair of shoes for the man they need. _ Looks like" the Cubs did themselves some good in their trade with St. Louis. They haven't been known as the smartest traders in the business. Let's hope this one turns out real good for the sake of our dear, dear sympathizers. Haven't seen Ed Doyle lately MCJaaven't. gone looking for him either. • A man telephoned his doctor excitedly, "Quick!" he insisted. "My. wife has appendicitis!" '"Now, now," retorted the docCbr. "I took your wife's appendix out five years ago. I ft^er^Tieard of anyone having a.second appendix." . ""Maybe not, Doc," replied the aaaiowsjiusband. "But did you ever hear of a man having a Stiebnd Wife?" - We have been running some 4tQffies for you boat owners to let you know about the service Miles E. Barry is giving in inspections and helping to make beating safer for all. Base Paths Busy As Tigers Beat Shamrocks 16-10 The Johnsburg Tigers continued to dominate McHenry County League opponents by trouncing the McHenry Shamrocks 16 to 10 at Johnsburg last Sunday. The Tigers fielded one of' the youngest teams in the league. The average age being around twenty. The young Tigers blasted three McHenry pitchers for 17 hits. Johnsburg jumped off to an early lead, scoring in the first inning and from there on were never headed. John Hiller led the hitting attack with four big hits; Ted Freund had three hits; Schaefer, Smith, Shields and Bennett each had two hits. Jim Shields won his first game of the season. Shield's pitched real good ball but had to have help from Ted Freund in the sixth inning to cut down a McHenry rally. Johnsburg will play Grayslake a twilight game at Johnsburg on Friday, June 19. Sullivan had started inside on the third row in the feature. Jr. Dodd of Waukegan and Jack Radtke were in the first row. Dodd took the load and held for six laps and then anxious Radtke hit the corner to hard trying to pass and put himself and Dodd into the infield. Both cars were later able to continue. Sullivans' winning record time was 7:48.20 for an average of 53.47 mph. The old record was held by Eddie Stillman at an average of 53:11 mph. Spectator Champion Dick Aisen of McHenry, Illnois was again blanked from a win but scored two seconds as he fought in the feature and his heat. The winners were Gil Rien of Woodstock and Wild Bill Owens of Antioch in the heats and Harold Gutche of Kenosha in the feature. FREE INSPECTION BY COAST GUARD OFFERED JUNE 20 Free safety inspections will be offered to all area boaters on Saturday, June 20, by the United States Coast Guard auxiliary. They will be conducted at the Fox River Grove marina. Inspections will eb made only at the owner's request by Craig Robertson, inspection officer of Park Ridge Flotilla 22- 18, U.S. Coast Guard auxiliary. Auxiliary members have no authority to penalize boats which are unsafe and inspections are intended only to warn boat owners* of unsafe conditions or equipment. Mr. Robertson points out that one of the major problems last year was the improper spacing of boat numbers. Proper number spacing is one letter or number spacing with the exception of the I between the L and the first number and the same between the last number and the next letter. State number decal should follow the last letter on each side o fthe bow, such as IL 2218 PR State Decal. i>y Gloria Vanek and Agnes Prazak The Pony League season opened up with the Sox and Giants playing to a 3 and 3 tie score. The game was called because of darkness. Mark Demoto struck out 13 men in 6 innings. Demoto plays for the Giants and it was the first time that he pitched. It shows us what our boys can really do. Thursday's game saw the JBraves winning over the Cards 6 to 3 despite a homerun and a triple by John Reinbolt. Sunday's first game showed the Cards winning over the Sox 8 to 6. The Cards player, Phil Kraus, hit a grand slam homerun and Jimmy Laursen hit a 2 run homer. For the Sox, Chuck Riley hit 2 homeruns, one in the 2nd inning and one in the 7th. The second game had the Braves beating the Giants 3 to 0 with a brilliant battery of Smith and Bottari. Smith pitched a 2 hitter with a beautifully played game by the rest of the team. In the 5th inning, with the bases loaded and 2 out, Mark Dfemoto hit one to left field. Everyone thought it was gone but Mike Swedo came up with a brilliant catch to end the inning to save the game. The leading home run hitters are: Chuck Riley, 2, Sox. Johh Rienbolt, 1, Cards. Jim Laur sen, 1, Cards. Phil Kraus, 1 Cards. Team standings are as follows: Braves 2-0. Cards 1-1. Giants 0-1. Sox 0-1. Parents, don't forget opening day, June 21. There will be a ceremony with our Mayor attending, plus a double -header. Come out and watch our McHenry Pony League play wonderful ball. The schedule for the following week is June 21, a double header, Sox vs Giants, and Cards vs Braves. On the 23rd of June the Giants vs Braves, and June 25 the Sox vs Cards. Thirstmas Time In June" Boat Parade Saturday FOX LAKE, 111.--Despite old sayings to the contrary, Christmas does come more than once a year--at least in the Chain O'Lakes area. Pleasure boats will be decked out in Christmas (that's right, Christmas) trimmings Saturday afternoon as Illinois boaters parade down the Chain O' Lakes in a contest to determine who has the most attractive, and original decorations in a yuletide theme. The contest is the highlight of the area's weekend celebration, "Christmas Time in June." Parade marshal is Ray Novotny of Fox Lake, commodore of the sponsoring Foxview Yacht Club here. He said the parade is open to any boat decorated in the appropriate festive regalia. Parade time is 1 p.m. and contestants will rendezvous at- the following locations: Schowalter's Point Comfort, Murphy's Point Comfort, Korpan's Landing, and the Waltonian Hotel and Mineola Hotel piers. If no docking space is available, boaters should assemble in the Fox Lake in view of the Waltonian Hotel, which is the starting point for the parade. Participants should check in with Novotny to learn their positions in the parade. Paraders will proceed from Fox Lake, to Pistakee Lake, then down the Fox River to Snug Harbor. Judges will be secretly stationed along the parade route. First prize is a 3.9-hp. Merc 39 fishing motor; seqond prize is a case of outboard motor oil. It seems that at times like these there should be more impressive words other than thank you. To see these youngsters, some 200 strong, in their colorful outfits is indeed a heartwarming sight. LAO" TIRE INFLATION Aside from faulty alignment, nothing will wear the tread off your tires as quickly as underinflation. Yet service records show that nine out of ten motorists keep less pressure in their tires than they need. Here are some figures to illustrate the cost of underinflated tires: total tire life is reduced 5 percent if tires are kept only 10 percent underinflated; tire life decreases 16 percent at 20 percent underinflation; at 30 percent underinflati° n a tire will last only two WKm .A JH thirds of normal. At 50 percent of normal inflation, tire life would drop to 22 percent. Overinflation up to 15 percent is permissable and is even advocated by some authorities for better than normal tire wear, though this course makes lor a "harder" ride and tends to produce body looseness. A sensible general rule seems to be to keep your tires slightly higher than standard recommendations for better wear, or at the recommended figure if maximum softness of ride is desired. When buying new tires, try inflating them to double normal pressure, then deflate to desired road pressure. Keep to 40mph for the first 100 miles. This flexing of the rubber without heat will considerably lengthen tire life. Incidentally, it is usually useless to balance new tires until they've had a chance to settle" themselves over several hundred miles. It is best to buy new tires in matched sets.
