THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER •M J T i n iMi inU|TKIBy« juiy £. 1901 SO I HEM... Carl ..Barnickol, who has been a summer visitor to McHenry about as long as anybody, retired last week after forty-four years of association with Lane Tech's athletic program. We remember Carl best in the days of the old Fox Pavilion, located in Conway's woods. That was a spell back. After 18 years of coaching football and track. Carl took over the duties of Athletic Director at Lane and has handled those duties with distinction up to the present time. •?„ Carl was not only sharp in athletic circles. He must have had a good' eye in his younger days as he picked off one of ^IcHenry's finest young ladies, Rosalie Stilling. The Barnickols will now come home to McHenry to live. Our jgongrattllations and best wishes for happy days on the shores Of the Fox. ~ The door bell may ring twice, fiut our phone didn't ring once Sfter the Sox beat the Cubs ll-l. ~ We are amused with a carefully prepared note from. Biff fteyer (he and his wife are loyal S.I.H. readers). He clipped a headline "52,713 SEE IraiTE SOX ROUT CUBS, 13.-1", pasted it in the -letter, |§>li'owed with* "Amen!" and sent carbon copies to Junior Freund' and Herb Reihansperger. *Of course, we weren't going to mention that score, but just #ant to acknowledge Biff's letter. ** "Short-Pants" Doyle wanderad over to Ford Hanford's to talk over the game, but didn't §Jlow up in our yard. We want to again ask you sports ^age_ ..contributes to ttHH inyour copy to our office SjJ^S^W, "Elrti St. Most copy has to be edited, typed and heads written fk fit the story l^lfore it is sent to the production Hne. "The Coast Guard Auxilirist, especially those who give the cSUHrteSy boat examination are decttcated boatmen who give unstintingly of their time and pirsonarfunds to perform this free service. Yankees Beat Shamrocks 6-0 In 12 Innings by Paul Nellessen It was a real pitchers' duel between the Shamrocks and Crystal Lake's Fox Valley Yankees at A. P. Freund Field Jast Sunday. Russ Cox pitched eleven and one third innings of shut-out baseball for the Shamrocks, allowing only five hits and seven walks. Ron Mauer came on in the twelfth with two-on and one out. Mauer gave up one walk, a single, and a homerun, for a total of six runs. Frisch , went eleven innings for the Yankees and was relieved by McGrae in the twelfth. He arranged for local boaters to have their craft safety checked by a team of examiners from the Coast Guard Auxiliary at the following locations:.. North Bridge Marine, McHenry; Snug Harbor, McHenry; Watt's Marina, Fox Lake; Bauske's Boat/ Basin, Fox Lake; and Kazimojur sort, Barrington, last Sunday. Boats passing the examination were issued decals which show they meet Goast CJttard's the Auxiliary's equipment requirements, are considered structurally sound and seaworthy and also meet state' requirements as to equipment, registration and numbering. Boats displaying the Safety decal of the Auxiliary are not boarded by Coast Guard enforcement teams unless obviously violating boating regulations. Mr. Robinson urges all boaters in the area to utilize the services and facilities of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and other boating organization's such as the Power Squadron, also active in promoting boating safety through education. In addition to courtesy examinations, other services offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary include public instruction courses in Small Boat Handling and Navigation; the Annual Cleansweep Operation, to remove debris and dangerous obstacles from local boating waters; Safety Patrols of regattas and special events; and a continuing program for the improvement of boating conditions. Mr. Robinson reminds all boaters that, "Safe Boating is Fun!" Everyone wants to be safe in all forms of travel -- by land (auto), by air (planes), and certainly aboard ship. However, many boat owners take too much for granted; for example lifesaving cushions -- are they in serviceable condition? Not torn or oil soaked? Can you read the "Approval" tag easily or is it unreadable because of long and rugged use (as a seat)? Would you honestly risk your child's life in this jacket or cushion? Don't wait until an emergency arises, check each one now. New types of cushions will be required as legal equipment on January 1, 1965. Be safe ~-- check your life saving devices, now. Fueling Your Boat . Never smoke at time of fueling. If you handle the fuel hose follow this rule: Don't jam metal nozzle into tank opening as a spark from two metals meeting can cause an explosion'. Hold nozzle tightly against side of filler pipe until you have completed your re-fueling. Know your tank capacity and required gallons needed. Overfilling is wasteful and when "under way" at a fair rate of speed your gasoline can and' does go out the New Driver Sets Record At Wilmot Stock Car Races . Bill Ansell of Milwaukee !" In the 15 lap semi-feature, Terry Vaughn of Milwaukee again was the winner. It marked the third semi win in a row for Vaughn. Buck Hossenberg of Kenosha was again the hard luck man as he has been for the last three weeks as he lead the semi feature on each of three starts necessary before the cars could go without a spin out or bad crash. Hosenberg spun in the first corner while leading on the first start. Next, and again while Hosenberg was leading, -Russ Sorenseu of Racine flipped making it necessary to stop the race. « wonder if his nickname is 'Babe'.
