THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER * « Jfc mm-m. «. iDUrBcnfi Juiy % isei SO 1 HEAR ... One phone call finally came. Jerry Miller, whom we suspect may have leanings toward the Cubs, called to acknowledge the Sox victory over the Cubs. Of course, before he hung up, we had to hear that it was about time for the Sox to win a game. Jerry also thought the Cubs should have put on Yankee uniforms to scare the Sox to death. JACK ADAMS HURLS NO-HIT BALL GAME Legion Team Wins 4 Games During Successful Week Then we had to meet the Wally Smiths and Fred Huemanns up at Pistakee Country Club and hear some more about our beloved Sox. r Now the National League wins the All-Star game and the time may be right for us to buy a one-way ticket to Paducah or some far away place. Oh, well--we've been down before. Just wait til World Series time and we'll tell the Sox not to sell tickets to those terrible tormentors. We'll fix 'em! Next year may be different jvhen the Sox bring up those sluggers they have hidden down in the minors. They do come back. Henry Foss was in to see us this week, jolly-as-ever. Jack Adams pitched a ijo-hitter against Crystal Lake last Wednesday night to hightlight a week that found the local legion team winning four games. We scored 35 runs in these four games while Jack Adams and Tim Freund held the opposition to eight. Gary Snell, Jim Meyers, Wayne Hiller, Jack Adams, anct Ken Frost all hit safely against Crystal Lake. Ken drove in Bruns in the 7 to 2 win. Jack, who was voted most valuable player on Marian's baseball team, had his strikeout ball working. A line drive to Phil Oeffling was the only ball that C. L. hit well. Saturday the team traveled to Cary-Grove and scored 7 times in the 2nd inning on their way to a 9 to. 2 win. Ken Frost and A1 Miller each had a pair of hits. Tim Freund, 2 and 1 for the season, pitched a good game and also picked up a single. McHenry beat Algonquin 10 to 1 Sunday for its fourth win of the week. Jack Adams had a string of 13 consecutive hitless innings broken in the fifth inning when Walter trpled. Algonquin got its only other hit in the 7th inning. Wayne Hiller, Jim Meyer, and Mike Pitzen each- had two hits. Mike has helped the team a lot by his steady improvement behind the plate. Side Notes: Jim Meyers is batting a .500 (8-16) to lead the team. John Mickels is second with a .400 average. Next Wednesday, the 15th, Mc- Menry will be the home team against Harvard at Freund Field. Game time is 6:00. Sunday, July 19, the team travels to Elgin for an 8 o'clock night game. The Elgin team is tops in its league so this promises to be a great game. ftllwas m great pleasure for all"TJf us - as the McHenry LiraiyTBoar'd met in the home of Mrs^Goodell Monday night. Dundee Beats Johnsburg 5-3 With 3-Run 8th A 3-run 8th inning proved to be too much for Johnsburg to overcome as they were defeated by Dundee 5 to 3 Sunday. & Twice the Tigers came from •behind to tie Dundee 1 to 1 an?3 12 to 2. In the ninth inning5 Johnsburg staged a late rally, scoring once and leaving two on base. Throughout the game the Tigers left far too many on i base which eventually meant defeat. It was a heart-breaking game for Jim Shields who pitched ,fine ball for seven innings, allowing only 4 hits. Jim had ;to be lifted in the eighth inning because of a stiff back. Ted Freund came in and took the loss for Johnsburg. > Next Sunday the Tigers will play McHenry at McHenry. Dundee (3) AB R H J. Schaefer 4 H. May 4 T. Freund 4 P. Morenz 5 L. Smith-".*. 3 B. It is a "MUST" on ALL gasoline powered boats (inboards). It is a unit that should be kept free of dirt so as to function properly. A clotted up flame arrestor is cleaned once or twice during boating season. To clean, remove two screws at collar and soak unit in gasoline for about 10 minutes. Then use brush to remove dirt from the" fins or screen, rinse again in gasoline and replace. Be conscious of its value as a safety measure. There are 8 manufactures who produce flame arrestors. Your marine dealer can help you if you need a replacement. If you want a list of the Mfr's. who produce them, write me care of Earl Walsh who has been most helpful in publishing this safe boat column weekly. NUMBERING ON BOATS -- All boats of more than 10 h.p. must be numbered except a vessel of 5 tons or over. We are primarily concerned with boats up to 65 feet in length and used for pleasure (not for hire). Numbers shall be mountfed on the bow in block letters, ?ftot less than 3-inches in height and of a contrasting color to the background. If the flare of your boat is pronounced and numbers are not easily discern-, able, place numbers farther aft bow, but not aft of beam. In other words, the numbers must be on the forward half of the craft. Larger numbers may be used and can be attached to solid backing and then screwed in place -- for work on the ways or painting this more pi-acticle, and saves additional holes in your craft. Next week we will cover dual ownership, registration papers Good Boating, but keep it pleasurable by keeping it safe. By the way, I Would like your comments on this subject! Do you think all boat operators should have a "Drivers" license (as in automobiles)? Also how old must a child be to operate a boat? Look for me at Snug Harbor weekends. CME Miles E. Barry, U. S.
