PmFrar ./ THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday. July IS. 1364 ^Toe Etten's big score in the Peterson Classic bowling event stood up for a second place tie as the. awards were made last CLASSIC WINNER JOE ETTEN Sunday. Over 15,000 bowlers battled for top money for seven months. Prizls* are big in this one and competition is keen. There were a lot of bowlers in back of Joe and only one in front as he put McHenry on the bowling maps. There was a day when we seldom missed a county league baseball game on a Sunday afternoon. Seemed like old times to drift down to the local diamond last Sunday to watch the visiting Johnsburg Tigers and McHenry Shamrocks do battle. The game is still played with nine men on a team and the rivalry is still there. But, the crowds have changed and the noise was missing. We enjoyed, sitting with Harold Freund, flashy shortstop and speedster of years gone by. It used to be said that Harold was half way down to first base before he finished his sttftngf with a bat. -Harold's son, Gene, has been a real good ball player and has now moved over from third bfiSe to shortstop to make room lor a coming young ball player, Bill Funk. -.Billy's father was .a great competitor on the ball field and hag three sons who will leave their stamp on sports records. • .^Another old ball player, Leo Smith, has a son in the game ti$3ay. Lloyd is a real good catcher for the Tigers. *J5eems like McHenry has sent several ball players to Johnsburg. DeCicco finished the game for the Tigers and showed good stuff. Paul Mor- <t|iCZ was in center field and always looks like a threat at the Blate. Of course, Jack Schaefer is a fixture in the Tiger infteld -- a good ball player. The old timers have stepped 433de at Johnsburg to make room for the young fellows. The young fellows do not swing a tilt with the same authority old boys did and will need time tfo develop. SHAMROCKS TURN ON TIGERS 6-1 Cox Pilches Five Hitter; Travel To Richmond Sunday by Paul F. Nellesser The Shamrocks launched a successful attack against Johnsburg last Sunday, at A. P. Freund Field in McHenry, winning by a score of 6 to 1. Russ Cox started for the Shamrocks and went all the way to win a beautifully pitched ball game. In nine innings Cox gave up only five hits and two walks. The Shamrocks backed Cox all the way, playing terrific defensive ball, committing no errors, and stopping Johnsburg's baserunners in their tracks, allowing only five runners to get past first base, and allowing only one one to advance past second. Shields started for Johns burg and was belted for four runs in the fourth off hits by Gene Freund, Dennice Gibson, Charlie Pierce, and a double by Jim Peterson. Shields walked Freund in the fifth and was knocked off the hill when Tim Farr pounded a three base smash in left-center field. The Shamrocks got their last run of the game on three hits off DeCicco in relief. The Shamrocks were a very happy crew after Sunday's game. Johnsburg has always been an old rival they enjoy beating most of all. We should have held an umbrella over him. • The diamond at A. P. Freund Field looks real good. Players told us it is one of the best diamonds in^hese parts. The game was a twist from many of recent times. McHenry won, 6 to 1. We are trying to write this column while listening to the Republican convention. Those boys are having one helluva time out there in California. Unless the Democrats can stir up a fuss over the Vice-Presidency, their convention is going to seem like a prayer meetin' by comparison. Now comes the style-makes with topless shoes and topless gloves for women. Some of us men have had topless haircuts for years. Open Weekdays 6:45 Sat. 1:00 p.m. -- Sun. 2:15 p.m. mil ILILIM by Agnes Prazak We again are asking you parents to come out to the beautiful grounds of the V.F.W. to watch your sons play ball. The league does need your support. Come out and watch your boys play a beautiful game of ball. Come out and relax and let yourself go and root your son home to a victory. The V.F.W. grounds do have picnic tables, a playground and refreshments. Bring out your whole family and forget your troubles and worries for a while. This past Monday our McHenry Pony League All Stars had a practice game with Wonder Lake. The McHenry All Stars won over Wonder Lake 13 to 0. A wonderful game was played by both teams. Unofficially, their tournament games may start this weekend. So folks, let's .help by attending the games and help our boys to a victory. This tournament is very important to the boys. To my understanding they will have to win 2 out of 3 games, then go on to another team. Let's hope that we can bring our boys to the top. Good luck boys. The Bluebirds are managed by Bill Bolger, one of the founders of McHenry's Little League in 1955. The Bluebirds outlasted the Owls who won ten straight games, after dropping the first three games of the season. Mgr. Bolger stated "winning the title was strictly a team effort. When injuries to key players and vacations cost the team several established regulars, the subs moved right in and did a great job". Patty Buss and Nancy Kralowetz tied for first place among the girls, and Tommy O'Connell was the first place winner among the boys. They will receive trophies for their fine efforts. All girls participating received very colorful head scarfs, and the boys received tie pins with a golf motif. Incidentally, Dickie Rosing sank a beautiful approach shot on No. 5. Betty Phelan and Bea Newkirk were co-chairman and did a very fine job in making it a very enjoyable party. As Betty so appropriately put it, "There were many future Patty Bergs and Arnie Palmers in the group."
