Mr. Stuhlfeier, who is in charge of the roads, stated that the ditches in the village have been cleaned out and that the patching repairs on the roads have been started. More road repairs will be done as soon as possible. The police department has requested a new radio system as the county and state police have changed their radio systems and our present system is obsolete. Outside of these items nothing of much interest was discussed and the board meeting was a quiet and uneventful one for a change. Another Weekend Getaway Your reporter and better half, Tom, took another weekend off to all end the eleventh annual World Series of Drag 885-5183 Racing at the Quad City Dragstrip in Cordova,III. This biu meet was held over the 27, JS, 29, and 30 of August and we managed to make it for the last three days. We went down j there as members of Joo ' Bush's pit crew. Joe had his j A fuel dragster "Speed Sport" j entered in the competition and | had previously won the meet in j 1960. The winner of last years j meet .was Chris Karamasines and his partner, the late Don Maynard. Don was Tom's first cousin^find was killed just prior to the meet in an automobile accident. Don and Chris also held the MPH and E. T. record for the strip. It was rather a disappointing weekend for us and Joe Bush for his rail was eliminated in the second.round of eliminations. .Not only did we lose, but previous to our last run we had wrecked two rear ends in the rail, and had a third sent out from Chicago which didn't arrive until 4 a.m. and spent all night working on the car. Then on the last run the chute didn'\ open and Jerry Davis, driver of the "Speed Sport", jumped on the brakes and managed to slop before going off the end of the strip but mined a new slicks by doing so. But we weren't the only ones having troubles. Two dragsters were totally demolished when they ran off the end of the strip and flipflopped like -arubber ball before coming to a stop. Luckily neither driver was seriously injured. Besides these accidents five dragster engines blew up and four parachutes were left laying on the strip when their cords broke. The dragster that won the meet was a AA fueler from San Diego, Calif., and he won with a E.T. (elapsed time) of 7.98 and a MPH of 204. In doing so he also set a new strip record orf E. T. and MPH. As you can see it was a pretty exciting weekend for us but its kind of nice to get back to the old grind again.
