COAL EVALUATION A report on methods used in the evaluation of Illinois coals and blends for use in production of metallurgical coke has been released by the Illinois State Geological Survey in Urbana. Utilization of the information in this report will permit prediction of the stability index of coke made from Illinois coals and from their blends with eastern coals. About" 1% million tons of Illinois coal, a record total, were used for metallurgical coke in 1963. Research by the Geological Survey is largely responsible for this use of Illinois coal for the production of metallurgical coke. ASKS FARM PERMIT Gov. Otto Kerner has asked Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman to permit farmers in 14 Illinois counties to graze and take hay off land retired under the Conservation Reserve and Feed Grain Programs. The 14 counties are Adams, Brown, Cass, Coles, Douglas, Edgar, Hancock, Henderson, McDonough, Macon, Menard, Moultrie and Schuyler. These counties are in Addition to 42 counties extending down through the state! for which a similar authorization was requested Aug. 13, IS SUHHYSIDE ESTATES VELMA STEPHENS 885-8428 ASK PUBLIC TO COOPERATE WITH ROAD REPAIRS Our road program is in effect -- believe it ot* not! And it is the sincere wish of the president of our association, Jim Le^hy, that everyone will cooperate with the' contractor and his men while our roads are under new construction. It is indicated that there may be a period, no more than five working days, when alR the roads will be torn up at\ the same time. Thus, arrangements have been made for a parking area for our cars at May and Mayfair Drive. During this five-day period the parking area will be under the surveillance of the police. Our roads will, however, be accessible to the fire department and rescue squad at all times. We were informed anyone else using the roads during this crucial period will do so at their own risks. Let us also keep an eagle-eye on the little children who love, trucks, tractors, etc., in actiop! Note: People wanting driveways paved should measure the length and width they desire, then call Mel Simmons, 385- 5696. He, in turn, will be able to give you a rough estimate of the cost for your driveway --which, he says, will include grading, filling-in or whatever needs to be done. After that it may be discussed privately between you and the contractor. So take the measurements first and call Mr. Simmons as soon as possible. A Reminder The Blessed Virgin Sodality will hold its meeting Tuesday evening at 8, Sept. 8, at Johnsburg Community Club. Neighbors Rally Round During Dottie Siepman's recent illness the neighbors in her block showed a true spirit of good will in lending a helping hand in hours of need. This, I am sure, helped speed her recovery--which was the, sincere wish of the ^ntii^strodivision. How About A Lift? Parents who have little tots going to kindergarten this year are faced with the problem of getting them to school at 12:50 p.m. daily. Are you taking one of your own, and have room for others? Mrs. Stanley Smolinski and Mrs. Mel Simmons would very much appreciate a ride for their little cuties. The bus will bring them home. PLEASE CALL. A Happy Reunion Brothers and sisters rallied round the Zeiger home for two wonderful days while Adeline's brother," Robert Laschenski, his wife, Lucille, and two of their four children, Robert and Laurie (Hank's Godchild) were visiting here from California. Sharon (Ada's Godchild) and Lynn remained at home; Sharon teaching summer sc and Lynn attending sUmme: school for extra credits in cpi lege. Adeline had not s^en brother, Bob, for eight years --* at which time he moved to California from Sheboygan, Mich., so it is little wonder they had no desire to go out on the town! It takes a lot of talking to catch up on eight years -- and where could it be done better than in Zeigers back yard -- over the picnic table? Sist er Ruth and husband, Mick, and their two sons, Ritch and Scott, joined them for dinner the two nights brother, Bob, was here. Also, brother, Don, his wife, Esther, and their two children, Leah and Greg, joined in the gab-fest later both evenings. Hope it will not be another eight years before you again join in this happy occasion. ' Vacation Activities Robert, Betty, Mary Jane and Johnny Lakowske and Rosemarie Thelen (whom they took along) went on a primitive camping trip for three wonderful, restful days the middle of August just beyond Chippewa Falls, Wis. They enjoyed swimming and fishing--even tho the fish refused to bite! The Ray Bieschke family vacationed there at the same time but, remaining longer, caught the fish that stayed in hiding while the Lakowskes were there. How did you charm them, Ray? At least the Lakowske family enjoyed the campfire built by visiting Girl Scouts (fifteen in all), who paddled in by canoes, and entertained them. Also two counselors from far horizons, who camped near by, joined in the fun Tuesday night before they journeyed home. /Marge and Louie, and daugh- J Pamela, enjoyed another vacation in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., taking with them Pamela's girl friend, Mary Eddy Szyrrtkowski, who has spent her summer vacation with them since July 1. Only this trip they went by a different route and to Detroit, Mich., first to attend the wedding Aug. 1, of Marge's cousin, Earlene Fritschka -- who is now Mrs. Bill Freeh. Earlene and Bill followed them down to Florida-- spending the first week of their honeymoon at the same motel! Louie and Bill went deep-sea fishing--not even a turtle took a nibble! The second week however, Louie went out one evening and came in with six Ponderosa Poodles INTRODUCING: LITTLE GUSTO-WIND PRIZE WINNING BLACK MINIATURE POODLE NOW I AT STUD Reasonable •STUD SERVICE • GROOMING • PUPPIES AVAILABLE Phone: 385-5970 large kingfish. He also fought a marlin, but that is the story of the one that got away! The children practically lived in the water. Jumping waves in the ocean was fun--but a wee bit frightening at times. They stopped at Miami Sea Acquarium to see the one known white porpoise to be in existence, called "Carolina Snowball". They stopped many places of interest -- such as Lookout Mountain where the girls rode to the top. Oh yes, they also spent a very pleasant four hours with our former neighbors, mom and dad Kimbro, in Tennessee. Then returned home in time to attend a nephew's wedding on Aug. 22. The nephew, James Ellinger, is Marge's Godchild. Hedy and Jim Haninger departed from home Aug. 13 to Visit the Ohio Haningers, Glenn, Margaret and the six grandchildren. Arrived in Gahanna in time for supper and to help Margaret celebrate her birthday. Her birthday cake was baked by son, Steven. After supper Jim and Hedy were given a ride through Gahanna Heights, to show them how this suburb has grown since they saw it la^t year. One week before their arrival Glenn and family had returned from their vacation at Virginia Beach, Va. The children brought back a collection of shells, of which some were gifted to grandma and grandpa. One of these looks like an old fashioned razor. Besides the shells they had a portion of a small fossil, but the most prized one is a large Conch with beautiful colors. On Sunday, Aug. 16, Michael celebrated his sixteenth birthday-- and baked his own cake. It was, as one might guess, chocolate--made from scratch. Dr. Glenn took his mom and dad on a tour of his new office in Gahanna. Needless to say, they were very interested apd impressed. The day before they left for home Steven and Michael surprised them with a nice car wash and, wouldn't you know, on the way home they were caught in the rain. No gripes tho, says Jim, because rain was badly needed. Almost forgot to mention the lovely (belated) anniversary present of a pair of Swan Planters they brought back from Ohio with them. They now have another birthday to celebrate, David Fruin, who will be four years old Friday, Aug. 28. So, as Hedy says, "Here we go again!" Happy Birthday To Mrs. Howard Mortimer (nee Rosemary Felicetti), Ed Wickman and son Douglas Wickman who will be one year old today. To Eric John Mischke tomorrow, Dennis Banker, Sept. 5, Karen Rau, Keith Wegner and David Zeiger on the 7th, plus another one year old, Donald Stuart Fail. On Sept. 8 to Dick Gehrke and Edward Marczyk. May you all be blessed with many, many years of health and happiness. Happy Anniversary Tomorrow to Ann and Rick Radke. Sept. 5 to Karl and Henrietta Rau. Sept. 6 to June and Otis Banker and Mr. and Mrs. William Schwieger. On the 7th to Donna and Ray Jensen.
