flection Tftyp -- Pz& Tout THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER ^htirsday, September 24,1964 McCullom Lake Home Will Be Featured On Hospitality Day The woman's auxiliary of the Memorial Hospital for McHenry County is deep in the plans for its tenth annual Holiday Hospitality Day benefit to be held on Wednesday, Oct. 7th. •? Auxiliary President Mrs. G. W. (Frame, and Hospitality Day Chairman Mrs. Virgil Smith, | with her co-chairman, Mrs. 1 Jack Satorius, have programmed a tour of country homes and other points of particular interest that promises to be most varied and rewarding. The} tour includes a visit to the Auxiliary's own Gift and Thrift Shop, a fragrant homebaked sale, a flourishing Farmer's Market and a' glimpse backward into the 19th Century in the seventy-five-year- Dld Woodstock Opera House on the Square. As usual, however, the greatest attention will be focused on the three private homes open to the public and especially decorated for the occasion. Harvest Home Harvest Home this year is the large white house of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Mass on the north shore of McCullom Lake. Stately oaks and elms surround its landscaped terraces and gently sloping lawns. A swimming pool and roofed pavillion and rustic barbecue house at the water's edge suggest pleasant outdoor living. Inside, the opulant furnishings bespeak a more formal way of life and there are many intriguing decorative features to catch the eye. Heavy panelled walls and thick Oriental rugs serve as rich background for gleaming chandeliers, Venetian glass mirrors and intricately carved and inlaid furniture. Off of the spacious living room, in the music alcove, is a full pipe organ. Graceful twin stairways wind up to the second floor. These stair-rails will be decorated on Holiday Hospitality Day with the auxiliary's famous wreaths and swags and garlands designed by Mrs. Irwin Burger of cones, acorns aqd nuts. A newly finished circular cocktail room--delicately furnished in white and blue--adds a contemporary touch to the long formal dining room it adjoins. The kitchen, too, is a mixture of old with the new as shining modern appliances nestle comfortably among the wooden cabinets. Inviting Library An inviting book-lined library leads to the glass-enclosed oval greenhouse where the potting tables will be filled with "wonder weeds." Here, where exotic gardenias and orchids once bloomed, the visitor will see mullin, mares' tails, tansy and other old friends gathered from the roadside and prepared for dried arranging. It is likely the greenhouse is the only room that holds no hint of the lively interest shared by the Masses. Throughout the rest of the house tables heavy with trophies and cases hung with winning ribbons attest to the fact that this is a horse-loving, horse-raising family. In a prominent place on the kitchen wall are the framed certificates for two American Quarter Horse association champions. Just down the lake shore from the house is a long white and red barn which is home to sixty head of registered quarter horses, several of wzhjch are champions and still winning racing trophies and ribbons this season. Mr. and Mrs. Mass purchased their first quarter horses twelve years ago to be used for farm and pleasure riding. The natural gentleness of the quarter horse permits children to ride at an early age which daughter Melinda Mass did. She began riding at 5 and has now at 17 advanced to become the leading high point girl rider in two or three classes each year in state comnptitions Many of the trophies and ribbons which decorate the house belong to Melinda. Show Horses On Holiday Hospitality Day there will be groomsmen present io show the barn and horses and to identify the champ ions. This year's Christmas House will be the remodeled farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rowe on the Greenwood road. Here the festive holiday spirit will abound as it has so many years before--for this gracious white brick house was built in 1857. Owen and Andrew Murphy, brothers from Braxton county, West Virginia, had journeyed on horseback in 1838 all the way to Iowa, On their trip back they chanced to ride across Queen Anne Prairie, named in honor of Anne Weston, the first white woman in Greenwood township, The Murphy brothers stopped their horses and, as they gazed out over the rich prairie-land, they decided to make this their home. They returned to West Virginia, married the girls they had left behind and came to settle down on Queen Anne Prairie. Owen and Andrew farmed the land together for several years but in 1843 it was divided and the Rowe house is on the Owen Murphy farm. Cabin Gone Gone now is the log cabin which was the first building on the site. Gone, too, is a second house built to accommodate a growing family. In their stead stands the present house and sharply contrasting before-andafter photographs clearly show the many changes wrought by time and families upon it. A tidy one-room school house next door for many years served the descendants of Owen Murphy and their friends and neighbors. It was converted into a private home a decade ago when small schools in the area were consolidated. On Holiday Hospitality Day the proven decorating talents of the Crystal L&ke auxiliary chairmen, Mrs. Andrew Rosulek and Mrs. Robert Rosenthal, will bring Christmas once again to this venerable old home.
