Under the picture she found a diploma that was "to certify that the Mc- Hgriry school had been awarded this testimonial for the second best high school exhibit by the McHenry County Agricultural board, given at Woodstock, 111., this first day of September, 1896." TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO i (Taken from the files of October 19, 1939) Mr. and Mrs. Ray McGee and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Freund returned Sunday from their ti-ip through the East, where they attended the thirty-ninth arnnual association of postmasters at Washington, D. C. The convention headquarters were at the beautiful Mayflower hotel in Washington. A sightseeing trip was conducted to Mount Vernon, Arlington National cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thurlwell and children have moved from Woodstock to the A. J. Kamholz place on Main street. Members of the township A.A.A. committees for the 1940 farm program were elected recently according to the chairman of the county committee, E. F. Kuecker. Those from McHenry who were elected are Ben Justen, George Young, C. E. Martin, Anton Freund and Nick Weingart. About $18,000 in unpaid taxes were sold Monday during the first day of the tax sale which runs from Oct. 16 to Oct. 21, according to a report given by the county treasurer. One firm, George P. Street, of Atlanta, Ga., purchased $17,000 of this amount. The remainder was sold to several people in ,Mc- Menry county. i Miss Clarice Stilling and Clarence Freund of Spring Grove were married at a very pretty wedding ceremony at St. John's church, i Johnsburg, on Oct. 18. Last year the McHenry business men gave all the kids tickets for a show on Halloween. McHenry boys and girls showed that they were real sports by forgetting the worn out practice of window soaping. Mary Ann Bolger, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bolger, entertained several little friends and classmates at her home, the occasion being her birthday. John Franzen, a McHenry barber for about ten years, died last Thursday evening in his home of a heart ailment he had been o suffering with for about four weeks. TEN" YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 21, 1954) The McHenry Garden club captured its first blue ribbon in competition recently when a shadow box submitted by Mrs. George Johnson and Mrs. C. W. Klontz won first prize in the Elgin Men's club garden show. Mrs. Klontz, a talented artist, painted the background for the box. His Excellency, the Most Rev. Raymond P. Hillinger, administered the sacrament of confirmation last Thursday evening to a class of 124 children and twenty-two adults at St. Mary's church. Jean and Joan Weber, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Weber of Main street, appeared on the amateur hour originating in Chicago on Channel 7, playing "Bumble Boogie" on piano and organ. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hettermann have moved from Richmond road to their new home on Rt. 31. Miss Catherine Diedrich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Diedrich of Volo, became the bride of Pvt. Robert J. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Smith of McHenry, in a lovely wedding service solemnized Oct. 19 in St. Peter's Catholic church, Volo. Sam Leibsohn has just returned from New York, where he spent a week on a shopping trip prior to the holiday season. Young people from foreign countries around the world, now students at Northwestern university, will be guests of McHenry families on Oct. 24 weekend. These young people will attend services at the McHenry Community Methodist church and will speak to the congregation. The McHenry Warriors football team thrilled the homecoming crowd with a- late fourth quarter rally to win over Barrington 21 to 14. Old friends of Mrs. Luella Stephenson of Ringwood learned with regret of her death last Saturday, Oct. .16, in Memorial hospital, Woodstock. In observance of National Newspaper Week, which occurred earlier this month, the McHenry Township Kiwanis club honored women in the newspaper field and other related media last Monday evening at LaGreca's Lakeside Inn at Wonder Lake.
