Couple Surprised At Charivari A group of thirty-four friends and relatives surprised Mr. and Mrs. Clarence J. Freund with a charivari last week Wednesday evening on the occasion of their silver wedding anniversary. Clarence J. Freund and Clarice Stilling were married Oct. 18, 1939, in St. John the Baptist church, where an 8 o'clock Mass was read in their honor last Sunday. The Freunds have four children, Gary, in the Army at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, who called to congratulate his parents; Mary Kay, Kevin and Randall. McHenry Girl Engaged To Wed Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hughes of 3102 West Crescent avenue, McHenry, announce the engagement of their daughter, Carol, to George Kurland, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. George Kurland, Sr., of 169 Lakeshore drive, Lake Geneva, Wis. Carol is a 1963 graduate of M c H e n r y C o m m u n i t y h i g h school and is employed locally, while her fiance, a graduate of Badger high school and Milton college, is, now completing studies for his master's degree in counseling at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. No date has been set for the wedding. Junior C.O.F. Plan Halloween Party The Junior Girl Forester members of St. Clara's Court, No. 659, McHenry, will enjoy a Halloween costume party on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 7 to 8:30 at St. Mary's school gym. Prizes will be awarded for costumes and refreshments will be served. Halloween Pot-Luck For St. Clara's Court St. Clara's Court, No. 659, Women's Catholic Order of Foresters, will have a Halloween pot-luck supper Thursday evening, Oct. 22, at 6 o'clock in St. Mary's meeting hall. Those attending are reminded to bring a dish to pass. Smorgasbord At Halloween Party A smorgasbord has been added to the annual Halloween card party to be held at St. Peter's parish hall in Spring Grove on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at noon. The committee is preparing chafing dishes, salads, meats, fish, cheeses, relishes, rolls and dessert. Knowing" the culinary arts of the Spring Grove ladies, those attending may be sure the table will be loaded with many delicious dishes. There will be many other prizes besides a prize for each table. Favorite card ganies and bunco will be offered. The public is invited. Dawn Marie Karls Baptized Sunday Dawn Marie Karls, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Karls of Woodstock, was baptized recently at Grace Lutheran church, Woodstock, with the Rev. R. C. Shawl officiating. Dawn wore the christening gown worn by her godmother, Patti Karls of McHenry, at the latter's baptism. Dick Pryzbyl of Crystal Lake \j»as godfather. A luncheon flowed the baptismal rite, served for twenty guests at the Karls home. The wedding date has been set for next summer. ) NANCY SCHLETER, DAVID BOYLE WED LAST SATURDAY The strains of the wedding march wafted through St. John's Lutheran church, Woodstock as Nancy Schleter came down the aisle to be united in marriage with David W. Boyle at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Fred B. Rogers of 1035 Queen Anne street, Woodstock, and Dave is the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Boyle,. 4706 W. Parkview, McCullom Lake. The Rev. Harold Thiess officiated at the double ring ceremony. The lovely and very charming bride chose an aqua lacc over taffeta street length with a removable jacket for her evening -nuptials. Her shoes were dyed to match her gown; hat and gloves were white and she was adorned with a corsage of whife^roses. Her matron-of-honor, Mr .Shirley Ahrens of Woodstoq selected the same outfit but fyf qbihtrasting pink and wore a corsage of~\frhite carnations. John Boyle/N^rother of the groom, served in the capacity of best man. For her daughter's wedding, Mrs. Rogers was resplendent in a street length dress of blue brocade taffeta with blue accessories and a corsage of white carnations, while the groom's mother wore a complementing outfit and white carnations. About seventy-five guests attended the reception at the bride's home in Woodstock, w h e r e r e f r e h m e n t s w e r e served. The three tiered wedding cake was cut by Miss Betty Mavis. Punch was served by Mrs. Esther Mansfield and Mrs. Eugenia Mansfield all of Woodstock, poured coffee and tea. During the post nuptial festivities, the guest register was passed by the bride's sister, Mrs. Phyllis Deates of Milwaukee. The newly wedded couple have postponed honeymoon plans until Dave completes his schooling for I.B.T. in Peoria. A graduate of McHenry high school, the groom is employed by the telephone company. The new Mrs. Boyle is a department manager at Montgomery Ward and company in Woodstock and is a graduate of Hebron high school. JOB'S DAUGHTERS Bethel 98 met for its regular stated meeting on Oct. 8, when plans were made for the rum-1 mage sale on Oct. 24 at the store where the Baptist church previously met. It is hoped to make enough money for new robes. One announcement caused much excitement. It was that Bethel 98 has gained so many new members that it will be eligible for a trophy which will be awarded at the grand session for the state of Illinois next spring -- providing six more members are obtained. Any girl with a Masonic relationship is invited to join. There will be a trip to Chinatown on Nov. 14 as a special award to the girls who have obtained new members. On Oct. 22 there will be a regular stated meeting following the dance instruction. The brilliant Apollo Opera company of Chicago will appear on stage singing excerpts from five well known operas. For the occasion a stately canopy will cover a redcarpeted stairway leading to the Opera House portals. The theatre-goer will be met in gracious dignity by a Prince Albert-coated doorman. All the best music, singing and accoutrements gathered for Oct. 24 will lend to the aura of a turnof- the-century production in the Opera House when Chicago's Gold Coast arrived in regal splendor. 1,000 Nurses Attend Illinois Convention More than 1,000 registered professional nurses representing twenty geographical distriets are attending the fiftyeighth convention of the Illinois Nurses' association, Wednesday through Friday, Oct. 21 to 23, in the Sherman House, Chicago. During most of the convention the nurses will separate into particular section and conference groups according to their occupational specialty. But as a united group Wednesday afternoon, they will consider their equal concern with the health of their own profession as implied in the convention theme, "Who is the truly dedicated nurse?" Marion Karlov of Crystal Lake was elected president of the parley. Other officers elected were Hadda Leonard of Huntley, vice-president; Mae Chesak of Huntley, secretary; Betty Lingenfelter of McHenry, treasurer, and Gertrude Hartley of Algonquin, chaplain. The Past Presidents Parley will donate to the Women patients at Downey. They will hold their next meeting in April at the Wonder Lake Legion home. Past presidents from McHenry Unit 491 who attended were Betty Lingenfelter, Frances White, Edie Myers, Eva Bacon, Lauretta Homo, Marge Mikota, Pearl Sanders, Dorothy Diedrich and Minnie Meyer. The Junior auxiliary of McHenry Unit 491 will hold their regular meeting Oct. 24 at 1:30 p.m. A Halloween party will be held after the meeting Prizes will be awarded for the funniest, prettiest and most original costumes. RICHARD ANTONSON St. Mary's Catholic church was the setting for a beautiful early fall wedding on Sept 12 when Miss Judy Phannenstill became the bride of Mr. C. Richard Antonson. One interesting note is that the great-great grandmothers of the bridal couple were sisters, Mrs. Anna Freund on the bride's side and Mrs. Marie Schmitt, a member of the groom's family. McHenry Man Claims Bride One of the loveliest weddings of the fall season in McHenry was solemnized last Saturday, Oct. 17, when Miss Sandra Rae Manke became the bride of Mr. James A. Thompson, Jr., in St. Mary's Catholic church. Rev. Fr. Eugene Baumhofer officiated at the 11:30 o'clock nuptial ceremony. The children's choir provided appropriate music in a church decorated with two vases of white mums on the altar. Miss Manke is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Manke of 913 Matthews Trail, Ingleside, and the groom is the son of the senior Thompsons of 3519 W. Pearl street, McHenry. Pretty Miss Manke approached the altar wearing a floor length dress of white peau faille, the bodice fashioned with corded oval neckline, long, tapered sleeves and midriff embellished with crystal bugle beads. Her controlled skirt swept into a chapel train. Miss Manke's headpiece was a crown of pearl and crystal beads with elbow length, three-tiered veiling and her flowers were a cascade of white spider mums and pom poms. Beverly Lutz of Chicago, cousin of the bride, was maid of honor and bridesmaids were Pamela Manke, sister of the bride, of Ingleside, Suzanne Homo and Maribeth Thompson, the bridegroom's sisters, of McHenry. They wore willow green, dulcette satin, street length dresses with oval necklines and elbow sleeves. The controlled skirts featured .bows and streamers in back. All had headpieces of matching braid and pearl crowns with blusher veils and carried cascades of willow green spider mums surrounded by white spi der mums. Annette Hansen, godchild of the bridegroom, was the flower girl. Kenneth Homo of McHenry served as best man and groomsmen were Steve Fike and Dennis Birmingham of McHenry and Frank Variny of Wildwood. Ushers were Donald Kibbe of Lakemoor and Chuck Violett of Woodstock. Thomas Thompson, brother of the bridegroom, was the ring bearer. For her daughter's wedding, Mrs. Manke chose a pink satin brocade sheath dress with matching jacket and pink accessories. Her corsage consisted of two cymbidium orchids. Mrs. Thqmpson wore an emerald green chiffon and satin sheath dress with matching jacket and white accessories. Her corsage was similar to that of Mrs. Manke. A wedding breakfast for sixty persons was enjoyed at the Legion, where 250 relatives and friends gathered at 5:30 for an evening reception. Following a trip through the South, the couple will make their home at 1408 N. Richmond road, McHenry. The bride is a graduate of Grant high school, Fox Lake, and the McHenry School of Beauty Culture. She is employed as a hairdresser.
