They jammed McCracken Field last Friday night to watch the fighting Warriors of McHenry High battle the Warhawks of North Chicago for the 1964 championship of the rugged North Suburban league. There might have been sad ness in the ranks when the Warriors fell 39-13 before a great team, but sportsmanship prevailed. Perhaps Bill Nye, who sponsors the outstanding player^ of the week report, expressed it best when he noted the sportsmanship off players, coaches and students as they wasted no time in crossing the field to congratulate the deserving champions. Bill felt there was no disappointment when such spirit was displayed. The Warriors hftd battled hard and lost to a team that Jack Thomas rated as one of the best high school teams he has ever seen. To some who did not see the the game and asked what happened to the Warriors we had this answer. North Chicago is a fine team that played like they deserve the championship. They might have won under any circumstances, but it is only fair to our team to report that neither George Koch nor Jim Morenz were able to play. Both were out with injuries. Now, you simply do not take both the leading scorer in the conference and your regular fullback out of your lineup without being hurt. Neither the coaches nor the players used this circumstance as an alibi in this or previous games, but it seems fair to report conditions as they exist. The Warriors have given us an exciting football season, finishing second in a league that is tough all the way. Many of the boys showed great improvement as the season progressed. All were eager to muc it up good during the game, then shake hands with their opponents after the game. We congratulate both the players and coaches. Now, if the powers that be will enlarge the press box next £ear we will say what nice fellows they are. We had 15 men in that box at one time during the last game. We are printing a schedule of games for the Johnsburg Forester basketball team in this issue. Bill Oeffling did not have a box score, but reported a 72-71 loss to Marengo last Sunday on a last second basket. Wauconda plays at Johnsburg this week (Wednesday night). Sunday games are played at 2:30 p.m. while the Wednesday night games will start at 8 p.m. The Johnsburg team has some real good basketball men listed: Don Bentz, Loren Freund, Bernie Schmitt, Tom Oeffling, John Huff, Gary Friddle, Bob Rizzo, Lloyd Smith, Bill Oeffling, Dick Hiller. Wally Frett will be player-coach. They play some real good teams. Watch 'em. We can remember when more importance was placed on Armistice Day, now changed to Veterans Day. Sometimes it seems we are getting too far away from the patriotism of other days. After playing on even terms with all the other teams they faced this year, they lost w DEAN HARGIS their season's final to the new North Suburban champs, North Chicago. With this defeat the Warriors compiled a 4-1-2 record, good for second place-- the same record and same standing they enjoyed last year. Our hats are off to coach Hargis, his assistant coaches and to the players for giving us some good football to watch during the last two seasons. The McHenry fans were proud of their team--even in defeat and realized that it took a championship team to give the Warriors their only season's defeat. North Chicago certainly displayed awesome power and finesse during the game. McHenry could not contain them and time and again the Hawks would break through the Warrior line far' tremendous gains. Even though the score was close at half time-- 13-6 in North Chicago's favor, many realized that the Warriors were playing a ball club of championship caliber. However, at no time, even when defeat was obvious, did the Warriors give up or admit defeat. It takes a special type of individual to fight such odds, and the work and determination that our players put into this game and every game during the year deserves our respect and admiration. North Chicago was the first to hit pay dirt. After moving If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. There is a destiny which makes us brothers, none goes his way alone. Character is "the result of two things, mental attitude and the way wc spend our time. Time is-- Too slow for those who wait. Too swift for those who fear. Too long for those who grieve. Too short for those who rejoice. But for those who love -- time is not. The principal part of faith is patience. "The Padre" the ball to thd one yard line, quarterback Gerry Lewis ran a one yard sneak for the score. Their second score came when their power runner, fullback Tony Gecky, plunged for eight yards. In between these scores, the Warriors also chalked up 6 points. Having trouble clicking on their offense without Morenz or Koch, the Warriors only moved beyond the North Chicago 50 yard line once in the first half. When they did, they scored. Rich Soda ran eight yards for the touchdown. The PAT was blocked. The half ended with the score 13-6. The second half was again dominated by the Warhawks. Halfback Mike Moats' 28 yard scamper and halfback Charlie Parker's two-yard slant had North Chicago ahead by 20 going into the fourth quarter. Parker scored again in the fourth period on a 19 yard scamper and Lewis added his third kick of the night. Jim Patterson got the final Warhawk tally, covering a McHenry fumble in the Warrior end zone. With the game won for North Chicago it would have been easy for the Warriors to admit defeat and give up. However, they wanted to score again and they did. On a series of passes the Warriors moved deap into Warhawk territory. Bob Doran caught a deflected pass and ran it to the three yard line. Rich Soda carried it over from here and Gelvin added the PAT. This was the last score and the game ended 39-13. For those fans that didn't get to see all of the Warrior games this year--here is a recap on all of the scores. The Warriors started by beating Grayslake 25-0. Barrington was the first conference game and the Warriors fought the Broncos to a 12-12 tie. Then the Warriors won four straight games--they beat Dundee 19- 7, Zion 20-0, Libertyville 12-7 and Crystal Lake 20-13. The final two games of the season were against Woodstock and North Chicago. The Warriors will surely remember the exciting 20-20 tie against the Blue Streaks. The season ended with last week's game against the North Chicago Warhawks. Many of the Warriors played their last game on McCracken field Friday night. Below is a list of seniors that gave the team all they had and helped make the Warrior season the success it was: Ron Amour, Vic Beck, Trey Covalt, Bob Doran, Terry Doran, Ron Gelvin, Keith Jensen, Craig Kieth, George Koch, Ken Laurence, Tom Lawnizak, Tom Lunkenheimer, Rodney Mauch, Terry Miller, Steve Missman, John Oppenheim, Tom Wiles and Bob Zriny. To these boys and to the rest of the squad we would like to show our appreciation for a season well played. We realize and. appreciate the work and effort you gave, the spirit in which you played each game and the type of individuals you all are. For pedestrians, every day is Leap Year! JANET VAN SHELLEY MARTHA LEIGH * JOHNSH • WINTERS - HYEi WAILIS Production Hurricanes Roll Along Toward Championship In 39-6 Win Over St. Edward's A perfect conference season and establishment of team or individual records will be in the fore front this Saturday when Marian Central's high-flying Hurricanes go to Wheaton for the season finale. Coach Tom Parsley's squad earned a tie for the title last weekend by whipping St. Edward, 39-6. Now it can gain undisputed possession of the Suburban Catholic Conference title by tripping a St. Francis eleven that has played better than .500 ball. This is Marian's first year in this strong? Chicago-area conference. A Marian championship would convince even the most skeptical observer that the Hurricanes are a force in the Chicago area that must be reckoned with on the gridiron. Marian faces St. Francis in a 2 p.m. game this Saturday. More than a dozen squad members will be playing their final game, including many key regulars on this championship team. Quarterbacks Tim Murphy and Butch Simonini graduate in June. So do such other regulars as fullback Bob Kristensen; Gene Church and Dan Jamieson, backs; Wayne Comead, Joe Lundborg, Tom O'Brien, Mike Pitzen, and Frank Schepers, Linemen; and Jim May and John Gende, defensive specialists. Murphy, 5-foot, 8 inch 165- pound Woodstock athlete, has worked his way into All-State consideration this year by consistent punting, excellent play calling and fine passing. Records Fall He broke one school passing record against St. Edward in the 39-6 triumph. He completed four out of eight passes for 181 yards. This boosts his passing yardage to 770 yards, eclipsing the record of 698 yards Mike Purvey established in 1961. Murphy last year tied Purvey's record of 44 completed passes. He has 40 completions this season with Saturday's game left. He could tie that mark. Over three seasons, Murphy has been consistent in his punting. As a sophomore he ave-' raged 38 yards a punt. Last year he averaged 38.4 yards and this year he has averaged 36.8 yards. Parsley recalled this week tha^ Murphy's longest punt of his high school career--a tremendous 80-yard kick against Wahlert in 1962--was nullified by a penalty. That would have boosted his 1962 average to 40 yards a punt; That kick traveled 60 yards in the air, DeWane Stars Mike DeWane continues his climb to stardom. He scored three touchdowns on plays of varying lengths at St. Edward, boosting his total to 10 in conference action. He scored on an 11-yard run, a 49-yard pass play from Butch Simonini and a 14-yard run. Mike Fogarty place-kicked three extra points, making his total in six conference games stand at 14. Strong defense again marked the Hurricanes' effort. Parsley praised the work of Wayne Motulewicz, Bob Kristensen, and Tom Kobza on deenfse and Tom O'Brien on offense as examples of the outstanding play by the titleminded champions. St. Francis lost to Marmion, 39-20, last weekend. Marian had to rally to beat Marmion, overcoming a 13-0 first quarter deficit to win, 34-13.
