v.; Ken Laurence Hauls M • Rebound THE McSENRY FLMNDEALER wvdnlidafi NvToiuudf 25i Iwi V Above is typical of Ken Laurence's ability as a rebound specialist for the McHenry Warriors. This picture was taken in the game with Grant High. Warriors Fade In Fourth To Grant 51 To 49 The Warriors Express rambled for three quarters in the opening game of the 1964-65 basketball campaign last Friday evening but lost its steam and was finally beaten by a scrappy Grant team by the score of 51-49. An ankle injury to Myron Bentz at the center jump starting the last period turned out to be the turning point in the ball game. The Warriors led at the time 42-33. From that point on the Orange and Black were totally inept. Coach Cliff Fulton's boys were on the right track through the first three quarters, although they were far from looking spectacular. They led at the end of the first stanza 15-9, and went to the locker room at half time with a 29-22 lead. Grant coach John Schad substituted freely in the early stages of the ball game in an effort to find the right combination. In the final analysis it was A1 Killoran, senior center, who took charge for the red shirted visitors and spearheaded the Bulldog victory. The 6'3" letterman ended the game with 20 points, six of which camfe from the charity line. Rich Smith led the Warrior offensive accounting for 13 points, but was followed closely by Laurence, Hiller and Bentz, all with nine. The Warriors had numerous chances to reverse the tide in the very late stages of the final period but were unable to cash in on the Grant miscues. Eight of the Warrior missed free throws were in the final quarter. In the frosh-soph prelim the visiting Bulldogs came from behind to edge the Warrior underclassmen 50-49 to spoil the debut of Jerry Fain's squad. Overton of 3903 Oak avenue, McHenry, is the starting defensive and offensive guard on the soph-frosh football team at Northwestern Military and Naval Academy. This college preparatory school is located at Lake Geneva, Wis., where Jim is a freshman in the corps of cadets. This is Jim's first year at Northwestern. S@€p@its Ambush Worriers 13=57 With H@t Shots The M.C.H.S. cagers went down in defeat for the second consecutive night in the infant basketball season as they succumbed to Antioch Saturday night by a score of 63-57, in the Sequoit wigwam. The home partisans were treated to some excellent outside shooting by their Bernie Smith, Bob Schultz and Tyrone Walls, a rugged 6' sophomore. The Antioch center, 6' 9" Vic Rogers, sat out the second quarter and the third as a result of picking up four personal fouls in the first period. However, he did account for nine of the Antioch point total. The Warrior starting team was the same group that opened against Grant on Friday. Lockwood started the Warrior scoring with a free throw and added another seconds later. But that was the extent of the Warrior domination for the evening. Antioch scored its first two points in the third minute of the first quarter and in the flurry that followed jumped to a 14-7 lead by the end of the period. Rich Smith kept the Warriors within range during the second stanza as he accounted for 10 points of the Warrior total of 15. This was offset however by the hothanded work of Bernie Smith of the Sequoits, who got some fine help from Bob Schmitz. At the half the Warriors were behind 34-22. The Warriors took charge at the outset of the second half and at one point closed the gap to five points. Balanced scoring was the key to the effort in the third period as Roy Moss got 6, Ken Laurence got 6, Hiller five and center Gary Lockwood four in the spirited move. The Warriors did manage to outscore Antioch in the last period, 16-14, but the effort was not quite enough. Smith hit on six of eight free throws for Antioch to keep the Warriors at a safe distance. He led scorers in the game with 26 points. Wayne Hiller had 13 to lead the Warriors, as did Ken Laurence. The Warrior Sophs emerged a .500 ball club with a relatively easy 49-32 victory. Tom Evans, Paul Kilday and Rich Lossman led the way for the underclassmen in the curtain raiser. McHenry FG FT F Moss 2 4 5 D. The first and only title won by the Warriors was back in the 1958-59 era. The Fultonmen will be battling a team of new faces as the Broncos were riddled by graduation. Also, the team will be guided by Jim Epperson, former soph coach who moved up to the Bronk varsity job with the retirement of Bob Madding. The Orange and Black lost two games to the Broncos last year, both by six point margins. In the first encounter the Warriors were on the short end of a 74-68 score, while in the second fray the score was 61-55. John Jusits, 6' 2" senior center is the only returning regular for Barrington, and Epperson has had to lean heavily on the lad in the preseason workouts. Jusits suffered a brain concussion in practice two weeks ago and thus missed the opening game against Maine East which the Bronks dropped 53-40. Rich Soda, 6' junior guard should be available for some heavy duty this week after sitting out the past week's activities. Rich Smith should improve on his performances of last week and give the Bronks many a headache before the evening is over. Myron Bentz, injured in the Grant game is a doubtful performer because of his severe ankle sprain. Ken Laurence and Gary Lockwood should be able to handle the rebounding chores, however. The soph prelim will precede the varsity game, which should get under way about 8:00 p.m. Final Conference Standings 1963-64 Barrington 11 3 Crystal Lake 10 4 McHenry 8 6 Dundee 8 6 Woodstock 7 7 J&tj UJaP&Jh. SO I HEAR... The snow did blow and our old chair and foot stool were hard to leave, but we went down to the gym Friday night to get a preview of our 1964- 65 Warrior basketball team. Seemed like the old guard turned out in good numbers. As we entered the hallway, there were voices of the past baseball season pchoing through the halls. Eddie Buss and Herb Reihansperger said they were talking about the Bears and Papa Halas, but we caught the remark about the American League that sounded like the bat and ball sport was getting attention from those two orators of rival leagues. Grant Township was here for the first game of the season, a non-conference test for both teams. And when we say non-conference, please allow us to add Thank The Lord without being sacriligious. It was the Grant team this time that hadn't shaken the habits of football, but their rugged desire paid off in a surprise 51-49 victory. The Warriors pattern of play was bottled up at times when Johnsburg Wins 96 To 85 Game ^ From Woodstock it appeared the team might forge ahead. At one time in the third quarter it appeared our team was going to pull away. Then came the fourth period and everything went wrong. We kept reminding ourself that this was the first game of the season. We are sure the season will improve with age and hope it comes of age Wednesday night at Barrington. That one will be a conference game and we want to see our boys get off to a good start. Thanksgiving Day is with us again. With all of God's blessings, if He can give us, and the whole wide world, peace of mind to go with a piece of turkey, our blessings should be complete. We hope the day is a happy one for aid of you. MCHS Wrestlers Top Ela Hears Bi The Johnsburg Forester cagers won a 96-85 game from Woodstock Wednesday night, Nov. 18, at Johnsburg. Don Bentz and Gil Kurtz matched points with 30 each, each with 12 baskets and 6 free throws. The Foresters again had a good scoring spread with five men in double figures. Johnsburg FG FT TP T.
