TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 14, 1939) The annual meeting of the McHenry County Farmers Cooperative association was held at the Court House, at which time officers and directors were selected. John S. Bolger of McHenry was reelected president. Joe Feffer, son of Mrs. Bridget Feffer of Crystal Lake, former McHenry residents, fell from a stack of cornstalks on his farm and broke both arms. The Chapell, Henshaw and Gorman homes are now completed and the families are moving in. These homes are at Wonder Lake and were built under the supervision of E. McKim of the Wonder Lake Syndicate. Twins, a boy and a girl, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Freund at the Woodstock hospital. Announcement was made last Friday that C. Wayland Brooks will be a candidate for the Republican nomination for U. S. Senator from Illinois at the primaries to be held next April. The Lions club was host to about 125 farmers on Tuesday evening. The purpose of the meeting was to better acquaint the farmers and businessmen in the community and give each other a better understanding of the other's problem. Songs and music and a lunch were enjoyed after the meeting. TEN YEARS A«0 (Taken from the files of December 15, 1954) The Public Service is in the process of bringing a 34,500 volt line into McHenry, with a new distribution center located in the rear of the Hester station on West Waukegan street. The rapid growth of the community has been responsible for the extra power needed locally. Former McHenry girls are fast breaking into show business in California. They are Nancy and Lou Nelson. Their vocal gamut runs from western to popular to semi-classical. They have appeared with such celebrities as Bob Crosby, Dorothy Lamour, Johnny Ray, Sons of the Pioneers and Margaret O'Brien. They have travelled over 30,000 miles by air to various camps and bases to entertain the armed forces. Mrs. Helena Klapperich passed away at the Villa Rest home at Pistakee Bay on Dec. 13 following a long illness. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Buss are the parents of a daughter, bom Dec. 11 at Memorial hospital. Square dancing for seventh and eighth graders and freshmen was held at Edgebrook school Saturday evening, Dec. 11, with about 145 in attendance. Ernest Useman called the dances. Five autos were involved in an unusual acident which occurred on Rt. 12, south of Dundee road. Occupants of one of the cars were Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Schaettgen and of another, Richard Widen of Wonder Lake. The accident occurred after a tire from an unknown source rolled onto the highway. The Plaindealer was one of twelve Illinois weekly and daily newspapers to receive editorial awards from the Illinois Agricultural association, according to an announcement made by the president, Charles B, Shuman. Awards were made for first second and third place editorials in weekly and daily divisions on two subjects. The Plaindealer won first place among weeklies on the subject, "Get Out The Vote". Anderson, boatswain's mate third class, USN, of Rt. 1, McHenry, was commended for his expert seaman* ship while handling a barge during a hurricane. He succeeded In making his w&y to the Naval base at Newport with winds up to 100 knots and in visibility of less than 40 feet without any damage to the barge. Mrs. Gertrude Hanish of second avenue died at the Villa Rest home after several months' illness, Jerry Cristy of Ringwood was injured in an auto accident which occurred on the McCullom Lake blacktop. A pretty winter wedding Saturday afternoon united young people from two Wonder Lake families, Miss Charlene Grosso of Wonder Center was married to Pelham Woodward of Wonder Woods in a double ring ceremony by Rev. James Vanderpool. Donald C. Freund of Elm street, a senior in the college of commerce at the University of Notre Dame, is again a member of the famed Notre Dame giee club. The glee club has appeared on television shows for the last six yearn. This year the singers will muke two coast-to-coast tours totaling almost 10,000 miles. McHenry led the county in sales tax payments in September, according to a report released by the state. The total listed for the city was $23,- 058.98 to X'un ahead of Woodstock with $22,624 and Crystal Lake with $22,292.23.
