Somewhat to the chagrin of tour better half, we have a drawer full of special events greeting cards saved through the years. Call it sentiment, call it what you like--we just can't throw them away. Met the Chuck Hillers Sunday morning on the shopping circuit. Chuck looks in shape right now to start the baseball season. Wish one of the Chicago teams would acquire his services. Both teams need help at second base. And what a cheering section they would draw from the counties of Mc- Henry, Lake and Kane! George Tussey has retired from his police duties at the ,fS!.cHenry State Bank and is missed by many of us. After many years as a Chicago policeman, George looked like a policeman, acted like a policeman and wore his uniform proudly. McHenry lost another old, old timer this week when Ted Winkel passed away. As a young man and through many years we enjoyed the hospitality of the Winkel home. We loved Ted's sense of humor. Each year we wonder why a 4-foot boy should be expected to use the same sizie basketball and shoot at a basket the same height as used by a big fellow between six and seven feet tall. Must ask Jim Doran about that some time. If there is a theory, Jim will know. Warrior Cagers Entered In Two Holiday Meets The McHenry Warrior cage team will get little rest during the yule vacation as they are contending in two separate tournaments. The first action will find the local lads meeting Warren High School of Gurnee at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, in the Warren High School Pre-Christmas Tourney. Other teams participating are Lake Forest and North Chicago. The winning teams Tuesday will play at 8:30 Wednesday in the finals. The consolation game will start at 7:00. On Saturday, Dec. 26, the Warriors will play Mt. Morris in the sixteen team Rockford Classic in the Boylan High School Gym. The game will get under way at 3:30 p.m. Other top rated clubs in the Classic are Maine South, Peoria Manual, Peoria Spalding, Carver (Chicago), Rockford Auburn, Mundelein and Dundee, among others. Play will continue on Dec. 28, 29 and 30 with the final game slated for 8:30, Wednesday, Dec. 30. Local Racer NORTH SUBURBAN STANDINGS W L Pts. Another outstanding McHenry athlete, Paul Morenz, has been chosen as a member of the Wisconsin basketball team which will play in Hawaii during the holiday season. Perseverence is a great attribute in athletic endeavors. We were especially proud of John Gende as Coach Parsley introduced him at the recent Marian banquet. John practiced hard, rode the bench plenty, then rose to all-conference selection in the past football season. We welcome another White Sox fan into the fold. Clarence Smith, former Yankee lover, has made up his mind to swing his allegiance to the Sox. Of course, the firing of Yogi Berra had something to do with the change of heart. How true. They say junk is something you keep for ten •years and then throw it away two weeks before you need it. "It is much more important to be human than to be important". -- Will Rogers. SOME THOUGHTS ON CHRISTMAS The biggest build-up of the year emotionally, commercially and in a religious sense always precedes the holiday we're just getting into -- a week when we can all take it easy and rest on the oars a little. This flowering of goodwill and happiness and charity has an effect on all of us and acts as a pep rally for those ideas that make life worthwhile after all. No matter how many worries HkJpflil we have they get shelved for awhile we become a little more human. If proof was needed that Christmas fills a deep human need then observe that this holiday and the thought and spirit associated with it has prevailed for almost two thousand years. That's two thousand times when kindness took a new lease on life. It's been said before but a re-issue always helps -- a little less money spent on expensive gifts and a little more time on trying to do something Christian would help us all. Every minister has some names of people who could use a little cheer right now. The streets and highways are filled this week with the cars of shoppers and party goers, some of whom have been celebrating. The accident tragedies that happen at Christmas are always the must tragic of the year. Don't let one happen to you. And i n c i d e n t a l l y , M e r r y Christmas There is nothing like the spirit of Christmas. Go out on the street. Go into a store. Just meeting people is a joy. The spirit of kindness and good will prevails. We know the greatest happiness on this earth comes from making others happy. Maybe the season has been commercialized beyond limits, but the spiritual side is still so evident that we have no fears. There are so many homes we would like to visit, but can only dream of making the rounds as we would like. We never could see how Santa Claus covers so much ground. To all of you at your house from all of us at our house, we wish you a Merry Christmas. Sincerely, "S. I. H.„ Determination to succeed at all costs is an excellent way to eliminate failure. <CAi BUSS FORD SALES 8933 W. MCHS WRESTLERS TAME TIGERS OF CRYSMLLAKE McHenry's wrestlers tamed the Crystal Lake Tigers by a 35-11 score last Friday night. McHenry won the first seven matches and won nine of the twelve bouts. The win was the third over a conference rival, Libertyville and Dundee fell to the Warriors earlier, and the fifth win of the year against two los.-es. First 7 Matches Won By Warriors Starting off with a pin was John Henneberg (95) who racked up his third win cf the year. Henneberg was winning 10-0 when he pinned his C.L. opponent in 4:28. Dave Freund (103) put his man to the mat in 48 seconds of the second round. Freund, a rugged individual, looks every bit a \ champion in winning his fourth match of the season. Senior Joe Bellino (112) wrestled an excellent match by showing poise in defeating Bakstad of Crystal Lake, 8-0. Captain Jim Anderson (120) wrestling a smart determined match defeated his opponent by a 5-3 score. It was Jim's sixth win of the season against only one setback. Rich Wolt (127) showed poise and confidence to remain undefeated in posting a convincing 17-2 victory. Junior Dale Marzano (133) pinned Dan Peacock of Crystal Lake in 5:44. A1 Sailustio (138) won his first varsity match by out-wrestling his Tiger opponent to a 8-3 win. Senior Jim Creamer (165) wor by the help of one point for riding time 3-2. It was Jim's third win of the year and his secont! win in a row by determined wrestling. Creamer won his match against Libertyville by a reversal as the match ended. Gelvin Undefeated Heavyweight Ronnie Gelvin Tinned Longaker of Crystal Lake for his fourth pin of the year and his seventh straight victory without a defeat. Ron is one of the most outstanding heavyweights in the state and pested his 33 varsity win, only L short of a school record. EDGE WARRIORS 68-67 IN LAST SECONDS A 15 foot jump shot by 6' junior Wayne Sorenson with five seconds left in the game enabled the Woodstock Blue- Streaks to edge Cliff Fulton's Warriors 69-68 and keep the Streaks on top of the North Suburban with a record of 5-0. Sorenson's game winning shot followed a three point play by McHenry's Gary Lockwood which put the Warriors ahead 68-67 with twelve seconds remaining in the game. It was a fine effort by the Warriors, but the miscues in the final period proved too costly. As late as the middle of the third quarter the Warriors had a ten point lead. A full court press hampered the Warriors throughout the second half. Ev Martindale put on a fine exhibition as he led the Streak attack to a 15-12 first period lead. He accounted for 28 of the final Woodstock total. McHenry crashed the Woodstock zone defense in the second stanza as they outscored the home team 22-14 to take commond by the half time 34-29. Balanced scoring in the period was the key as Soda hit six, Lockwood six, Laurence five, Bentz three and Smith two. Smith was able to drive the Woodstock defense as the third period began and repeatedly hit Bentz with passes under the basket for the easy two-points. Bentz tallied twelve of his game total of 19 points in the period. McHenry completely dominated the rebounding but it was not quite enough to cope with the fine * shooting of the Streaks. The Warriors actually outscored Woodstock from the field, 27-24 field goals, but the Blue and White hit on 21 of 27 free throws while the Warriors hit on 14 of 22. Grapplers Fall T@ Arlington Heights Team A strong Arlington Heights wrestling team invaded and conquered McHenry's Warriors last Dec. 8th by a one sided team score of 34-8. It was only the second defeat suffered thus far by McHenry against four wins. In the lineup for the Warriors were four sophomores brought up to the varsity because of injuries or weight difficulties. All four, Pete Smith (103), John Henneberg (95), Tom Dougherty (180), and A1 Sullustio did a fine and creditable job of wrestling more experienced opponents and were not pinned. Junior, Dave Weikel (154) ahead of his opponent with only 11 seconds of the match remaining was reversed and pinned by his alert Arlington opponent. This should teach Weikel never to let up until the end of the match. Wolf, Gelvin Win Senior, Rich Wolf (127), won his first match of the season by some fine and determined wrestling. Wolf actually won his close match on a one point riding time advantage, 3-2. Undefeated heavyweight Ron Gelvin, leading 2-0 by way of a take down, pinned Frase of Arlington in 2 minutes and 21 seconds. This was Ron's 6th consecutive win for the year and his 32nd win in his career as a McHenry Warrior. The school record is held by former conference champion Bob Wahl (180) at 36.
