. J+ction On* Four THE McHENRY FLAINDEALER < Thursday, F«bruary 4,19G5 •irrffSSs SO I HEAR... We were in our glory Tues: day night as we accepted an invitation from. Don Peasley ito attend the big sports banquet sponsored by the Elks Club in Woodstock. , McHENRY WARRIORS WIN WO BIG GAMES TO TAKE OVER THIRD PUCE SPOT White Sox were there in strong numbers^ So was "Gabby" Hartnett, famed as a Cub, now back in baseball with the Kansas City Athletics. Paul "Dizzy" Trout, former pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, was the toastmaster deluxe. Snappy stories and baseball tales rolled out as the crowd roared. Pete Ward, Sox third baseman, spoke with the confidence developed along the banquet trail. Aside from not liking sports writers (the ones who misquote him), Pete seems to have the world in the palm of his hand and a great future in baseball. From the Cubs came "Rip" Collins, the former St. Louis GasJHouse Gang first baseman, with a wealth of stories about the likes of "Dizzy" Dean, Frank Frisch and "Pepper" Martin. "Chuck" Hiller made his talk short, but the applause was long and loud from his many friends in McHcnry County. „The high point of the evening was the presentation of a plaque to Joe Frett, who is known as Mr. Baseball in Northern Illinois. Joe did much for baseball in our area throughout the years and has a flock of friends who never forget. He is truly the people's choice. The Elks received a nice telegram from Congressman Bob McClory, congratulating the group for honoring Joe, his long time friend,'4 Joe's modesty loomed up as his own sort, Bob, the Jacksons and a long line of true friends lined up to get his autograph. Said Joe,t "This is too much." \ We -spent a long time talking over old time sports history with fellows like "Syd" Corson. It was an outing that went right to our heart. And they couldn't have honored a finer guy than Joe Frett. We would like to go on with some other items, but the clock tells us it is time for the presses to roll. So, let's close with a rising, rousing hand for Betty Clark. She bowled a 225 game. Wow! The McHenry Warrior cagers continued on their winning ways last weekend as they breezed past North Chicago Friday night by a 77-66 score, and then came back Saturday to defeat Libertyville 71-68. The productive weekend enabled the Warriors to move into sole possession of third place in the conference race with a record of 6-4. In the Friday encounter with -North Chicago it was a fine second half effort by the Warriors that assured the victory. The fourth stanza was particularly well played as the Warriors entered the quarter behind 53-51. Led by Ken Laurence and Rich Smith the WaN riors out-scored the Warhawks 26-13 in the period. The game was a close affair all the way as North Chicago led at the end of a quarter 18-17 and at the half 34-33. - All five of the Warrior starters were in double figures. Rich Smith led the attack with 21 points, followed by Bentz and Laurence with 15, Hiller with 13 and Soda with 11. Rufils Woods led the Warhawks with 16. It was the third Warrior victory over the North Chicago team this year. . The Warriors handled the Libertyvill° Wildcats much easier than Lhe final score of 71-68 would indicalc. Led by Myron Bentz, who had an outstanding game for the Warriors, the Orange and Black had an 18 point lead with 3:55 remaining in the third period. The Wildcats were a determined crew however and they persisted to the final buzzer. The Warriors led at the quarter 14-11 and had boosted their lead to 37-23 with a quick flurry just before the halftime. Smith led the Warrior charge in the period and he got able support from Bent/. Bentz incident ly was playing with an eight stitch gash over the right eye. After the huge Warrior lead in the third period the boys seemed to let up. The Cats made their move but it was not enough as the time ran out. Smith led all scorers with 23 points, Bentz chipped in 22 and was a demon on the boards. Wendt led the Cats with 21. „ The victory over Libertyville moved the Warriors one game ahead of the Wildcats as the two clubs were tied starting the evening festivities with identical 5-4 records. Coach Larry Leon of Libertyville made a trip to the Warrior locker room after the game to congratulate Myron Bentz on his fine performance. The Warriors appear to be one of the best clubs in the conference right now but must stop Dennis Desmond, high scoring Tiger guard, if they expect to hold on to third place. A win will even keep Warrior hopes alive for a share in the conference crown. However, with four games left on the league schedule only a complete collapse by the Dundee Cards will enable the Warriors to catch them. It seems that the present goal is a second place finish. With the Woodstock club and Dundee still on the Warrior schedule that is not impossible. HOSPITAL MEETING Members of McHenry hospital are reminded of the annua! meeting which will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, at 7 o'clock at the McHenry Country club.
