I am convinced that sat£$ tax is a regressive form of taxation which hits the small wagijjt earner proportionately harder than the more affluent of out* society. Knowing full well that this type of tax is regressive, I voted for this bill because I was convinced that the cities and municipalities need this increase in monies, or the various police* men, firemen, and general employees may never receive their much-needed raises and the municipalities would either have to curtail some oservices or stop planning for future Expansions. The passage of this bill does» , not necessarily mean that the municipalities have to enact this, increase and I'm hoping that many of our local communities do not, but if they do. p'ease remember that the State Legislature did not place this additional tax ort you, your Iocs' community did. Another bill that is coming up soon is House Bill No. 247 which would . forbid employers T-om using the lie detector by •compulsion us a condition of obtaining or retaining employment. Under this b'.ll, an employer would still be free to suggest that a person take such a test, but it must be voluntarily taken. An example of why I consider this bill necessary is the state policemen who were fired from their jobs juit because they refused to take the test. We, in America, presume a person innocent until proven guilty and I cannot reconcile this belief with the presumption of firing people on the basis of refusal to submit to a tie test. " If this procedure of taking a lie test were so fool-prjof. why aren't the results admissible into a court of law? The fact remains that even the Central Intelligence Agency admits that Soviet agents are trained so as to beat this test. If all we are interested in is results, why don't we torture and put people on a rack in order to get at the truth. The same reasoning holds true in the invasion of privacy that the lie detector provides. This bill is bi-partisan and I urge everyone to write their Senators and Representatives of their viewpoints on this proposal. Brokers Cooperation Invited. MR. Irwin, 1919 Lakewood avenue, are two of the many new memljers joining the Citizens for Eldercare committee, it was reported this week at the organization's headquarters, 360 N. Michigan Avenue, Chicago. The Citizens for Eldercare Committee -- a statewide body of non-partisan voters -- is a newly-formed, nonprofit organization created to lend active support to the Herlong- Curtis Eldercare bill now before Congress.
