You were fortunate if it was only a cold or flu, for viruses also cause such devastating diseases as typhus, measles, mumps, poliomyelitis, smallpox, virus pneumonia, infective jaundice and chickenpox -- to name a few. Whatever virus disease you encountered, one thing is certain-- your physician had „ no specific cure for it. Despite years of intensive research, the tiny, disease-causing organisms known as viruses have successfully eluded all attempts tb wipe them out with antibiotics or other biochemical agents. One reason for this successful evo&itm ijs the size of the viriis ifself. Unlike bacteria and other disease-forming organisms, viruses are much too small to be seen under an ordinary microscope. It Was not until the advent of electron microscope, ten years ago, that y scientists could take a good look at viruses and see how they caused disease. The electron microscope -- which uses a magnetic field for a lens and a stream of electrons instead of a beam of light -- showed that most viruses Caused disease by injecting their toxins through the cell wall of a living organism. With this information -- plus a clear physical picture of the virus -- medical scientists Set to work developing drugs to destroy them. Thus far, however, all attempts at finding specific, antiviral chemical agents hay? met with frustration. The simple structure of viruses enables them to modify their form almost instantaneously to remain immune against an attacking drug. Some viruses, it has been shown, can even take on a crystalline form while retaining their disease-causing potency. Due to this stubborn resistance, medical science has shifted its attack. Instead of seeking new drugs to kill viruses, they are finding new, effective vaccines which render the virus helpless through immunization. These protective substances form an effective "one-two punch" against invading viruses. The antibodies cause them to clump together (agglutinate), after which the antitoxins neutralize their poisons. . Thus far, immunization agahnst viruses has progressed slowly, but with dramatic results. Already it has conquered polio, measles and smallpox. In the future, effective vaccines are promised for German measles, infectious hepatitis, and the greatest pest of them all-- the common cold. . 1961 Ford 4 dr., V-8., auto., radio, heater. $895 • 1959 Chevy Conv., V-8, stick, radio, heater. $595 « 1964 Ford Custom, 2 dr., 6, stick, radio, heater. $1,695 • 1963 Falcon Wgn., 6, auto., radio, Tax Facts heater. C. Coyle, Jr., District Director of Internal Revenue. An illegible name or address is quite often the reason for failure to receive refunds, Mr. Coyle said. Thousands of refund checks are returned to Internal Revenue every year because the postman cannot deliver them. Mr. Coyle said that it is permissible to sign your name at the bottom of the return the way you always sign your name, even if your signature is a hurried scrawl. But at the top of the return, be sure that your name and address are carefully printed or typed along with jtour social security number. Director Coyle said that if the taxpayer has moved, he should show his new address to promptly receive refunds and other mail from Internal Revenue. If he moves after filing, a forwarding address should be left with the post office.
