iPteiii --;Pag^ Six THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday. May 13i 1965 MCCULLOM LAKE NEWS EVE LEVESQBE S85-3191 |Bestow Scholastic Honors On Youth From Community At 7:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday), Kenneth E Nelson, the son of Elma and Earl Nelson, will be honored at the scholastic , honors day convention at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. The special program will be held at Shyrock Auditorium in recognition of high scholarship. A reception will, follow in the Roman Room of the University Center. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson will be unable to attend because of the 400 mile trip. What makes this story doubly notable, Ken enrolled at Carthage College, Kenosha, Wis. and was then awarded a 2 year scholarship to S.I.U. He reported to that University 10 days late last fall and in a few short weeks, he had completed all his back work and was on his way to the top of all his classes! Earl and Elma were invited to attend this most auspicious occasion but distance and employment prevent them from being there in person, but not in spirit! We know how thrilled they are. Our daughter Chrys was pledged to Alpha Lambda Delta, at MacMurray College recently. This is a chapter of the national freshman women's honor fraternity (not a social sorority). She was one of nineteen women out of a class of 170 who were initiated during ans impressive candle lighting ceremony. Each T?afi to average 3.5 or better out of a possible 4.0 grading system for the first semester. Our pride has no limit! Last week we carried the name of only one local student who made National Honor Society at McHenry high school. We are intensely pleased to list the names of more. First is Pamela Parkhurst, daughter of Mrs. Virginia Delia, who has been an outstanding student for all four years, a talented musician garnering many awards in competition; and last, but not least, a brilliant Latin student. Just recently, she won an award in state competition. Jim Anderson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Anderson of Lake Shore Drive, became a member of N.H.S. in his junior year and has maintained his high scholastic average as a senior. A new pledge to the society is Ron Gelvin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Odell Gelvin of Ringwood Road, who has won distinction also in connection with the 4-H program. May we offer our sincerest congratulations to these young people who are distinguishing themselves. Bruce Thacker, son of Barbara and Chuck Thacker, made the A honor roll at Junior High for the last grading period. This young man is a devotee of history and can name all the presidents, their V.P.'s; and much of the background of each administration!! And, he is only in the sixth grade. In addition to his high grades, he is quite a musician and must practice many hours each week on the accordion. This kind of news we LOVE to write! Rummage Day Approaching Rapidly The Ladies of the Lake will meet tonight to make further plans for the annual rummage sale to be held Saturday, May 29. They will meet at 8 p.m. in the beachhouse, and of course, ALL women of the community are cordially invited to attend as visitors or members. Gals in the midst of housecleaning are asked to save good usable clothing and small household items. If you need pickup service, we shall publish the number to call at a later date. Cullom-Knoll Needs Your Help Another reminder for those who intended to send Cullom- Knoll dues but may have procrastinated. The dues are six dollars per annum and may be sent to Mrs. Gail Johnson, treasurer, 4911 W. Orchard Drive. If you have looked at the ravages which the extreme weather caused on the beach, you know how much work must be done. The beach must be plowed and raked and this costs money. The grass must be mowed all summer and this, too, is expensive. Won't you please do your part? Wee Wounded Warrior Kurt (Dinky) Walter is having fun collecting autographs on the cast on his right arm these days. He was a mite too tricky on his swing set a few weeks ago and a "busted" wing resulted. Hasn't dampened his spirits one bit, but he did give Mom Gert and Daddy Bill a few rough moments. It was set and he is receiving further care, at McHenry hospital. Sisters Share Misery Operations came double for Clemencia and Bob Fernandez last week when two of their daughters reported to McHenry hospital. Yolanda and Sylvia shared the same room for their tonsillectomies and are doing the same at home while they convalesce. They should be back at their studies Monday morning. Couldn't Stay Away! Since Donna (nee Harris) and Tom Kacprowicz were married last November and left our shores they have been homesick for the village. They rectified that recently when they rented the darling redwood home on Eastwood Drive and moved in--furniture and baggage. s They have also acquired a brand new set of "wheels" since their marriage. We anticipate having them with us for a long time. Proud Grandparents Marie and .Tony Hagel are reaping the harvest of providing the finest in education for their own children by seeing the ability passed on to the next generation. When Marie and Tony immigrated to this country they vowed to provide college opportunities for their progeny and they carried out the program. Last week, they were thrilled to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blaney of Skokie and witnessed their grandson -- Robert Blaney. Jr., initiated into the National Honor Society at Notre Dame high school. They were also notified that granddaughter, Tony Blaney, was installed as pledge mistress of Theta Phi Alpha sorority, Loyola University. Another granddaughter -- Barbara Hagel, 7, made her First Holy Communion and her big sister, Kathy, was honored f Handle major medical bills? Lee B. Kortemeier Could you? Even if they added up to several thousand dollars for a really serious sickness or accident? You could if you have the extra protection of Medical Catastrophe insurance from Country Life--the "big bill" coverage that takes over where regular hospital-medical insurance leaves off. Daughter and Spouse Provide Surprise Right under her pretty little nose, a surprise party was planned for Lois Parenti by daughter, Dawn, and hubby, Don. The occasion was the Parentis' seventeenth wedding anniversary. Dawn baked a lovely 3 tiered cake and prepared jello molds at the home of a friend. They were stored there until after the guests arrived. Don fixed sandwiches and had these spirited away. Those who walked in to share the happy occasion were Grace and Rog Kinsey, Gail 'n' Rich Johnson, Marie and. Allen Mc- Kim, Marge and Art Nelson, and Betty and Ed Hammerstein, Jr. . For entertainment, the couples played CjMpftdes and the gals won 2 out <$£ 3<. Tot Lost Following Tot Party May 1 proved to be a harrowing one for Lois Parenti when she planned a simple party for daughter, Daureen, who turned 5 on April 29. Lois was unaware at the time that she would be feted that evening. Five games were played by Lee Hammerstein, Corky Whitney, Gloria and Sylvia Fernandez, Peggy Murray, Fred O'- Halleran, Peggy Burg, Dawn McKim, Janeen Schlitt and Cynthia Kinsey. The games included "pin the tail on the donkey", ring toss, bean bag, and musical chairs. The kids gorged on cake, candy, ice cream, and soft drinks. The party was scheduled to . • -•» . end at 4 p.m. and' Grace Kinsey arrived with wee son, Jeff, to pick up Cynthia. As the gals prepared to view the exciting Derby race, it was discovered that Jeff was gone! After a great deal of searching and calling by several distraught mothers, the young lad was located in the woods, crying up a storm. Yep, you guessed it; they MISSED the race, but were happy to find the lost one, none the worse for wear.
