Plans went wrong and there wasn't room for all of the sports stories last week. But, to soothe our disappointment let it be known that all other sections of the paper had the same trouble,, As the fella Says, 'That's show business." Before we forget, the Cubs were in first place for one day a while back and "we didn't say a word about it. Marie Yegge and Herman Kreutzer let us know about it plenty. Must be they think their favorites may never again see the top of the ladder. It is the end of four years of college for our daughter and we have started to haul her belongings home in installments. Took a trip out to Dubuque last weekend and came home with a little strain on the springs. The Mississippi river is narrowing back to normalcy, but results of the flood are in evidence. They are still pumping out the basements and using hose to wash away the muck. The McHenry Shamrocks are ridin' high this week after beating the visiting Johnsburg Tigers last Sunday. The Booster meeting wasn't well attended Monday night, but a long list of donations, large and small, attest to the interest and willingness to keep the team in action. We have talked to others and find that McHenry is no different than other towns in their problem of financing a baseball team. We feel that McHenry should always be represented in league play and cannot imagine a sports-minded community like ours ever letting the team slip away. The Shamrocks have had a real boost from those who purchased Booster stickers this year, but the field has only been.scratched. The boys need your, help in organizing and in setting up a sound financial structure that will carry on from year to year. The Shamrocks now have 19 local boys on the team and, with several double headers on the schedule, should be able to give all a chance o play. This Booster Club will not be composed of business men only.' It will stretch out to any and all who might like to part with a buck or two or more to keep this team on the field and representing McHenry. We think it is the best thing for all if we keep our young men participating in organized sports. Chuck Hiller goes to the Mets. Well, Chuck, you are joining some big names and hope-you will have plenty of chance to show them your hustling brand of baseball. Suppose Alex Justen wouldn't know a thing about a card mailed to George P. Freund. It shows Green St., looking South - from Elm with traffic post in center of intersection. Picture was taken some forty years - ago and shows that Model "T" Fords were way out in front. What really gave us a chuckle was the list of names signed to the card. After looking over the nicknames, which wert actually used, we have decided against printing the names. Any old timer would get a kick out of the list. It has been called to my attention that some twelve year old boys were disappointed because they didn't go to the majors. Some of these twelve year olds are very capable. National Headquarters limits the number of twelve year .olds that each team may have, so it does present a problem. I would urge all of you boys who feel you have the ability to play major league baseball to play all the harder and when replacements are needed (and each year several boys do move up during the season) your chance may still come. . The season will get under way Friday night with the Eagles playing the Falcons. On Saturday night, the Hawks will take on the Condors. On Sunday there will be afternoon and evening games. In the afternoon, the Owls host the Bluebirds and in the evening the Cardinals play the Orioles. Mayor Doherty was on hand to throw out the first ball. Ray Franklin started us on the rqad to victory with a two run single in the second innning. We had a few hitting stars; Russ Cox (4-5), Bob Harris (1-3), Tim Farr (2-2), and Clarence Adams (2-4). The fine defensive play "of the entire Shamrock team helped Russ Cox and Phil Schmitt win the game, while allowing only 5 hits. There were two fine examples of long ball hitting. Lloyd Smith of Johnsburg poked a home run onto the road in right field and Denny Gibson poked a triple over the road ^ in right field.
