Carpentier Secretary of State DRINKING AND DRIVINGSOME NEW FACTS How many of the drivers inrolved In fatal accidents in Illinois during 1962 had been drinking alcohol? 10.5% . . . according tp the reports received by the Division of Highways. A recent study completed by the State of New Jersey, however, indicates very strongly that the drinking and driving problem may be much more serious than we realized. Beginning in 1961, a uniform autopsy procedure was developed in all counties within that state to measure the presence of alcohol in traffic accident victims. A summary of the records shows that 58% of all drivers involved in fatal collisions in 1961 had been drinking prior to the accident. In 1962, the percentage rose to 59. m "Let's charter a couple of buses for the country club party, Jim, and leave our cars at home." Hot all of these drivers were dead drunk, or even "tipsy" according to some standards. Based on the blotfd alcohol levels indicated by the autopsies, 49% of those who had been drinking were definitely intoxicated. A fourth of them were in the .10% and .15% range and the others showed a smaller amount. This points up the fact that you don't have to be drunk to be dangerous on the road . . . just two or three drinks will inlpair driving skill and judgment. The facts speak for themselves. There is no reason to believe that the drinking and driving habits of the residents of New Jersey are significantly different than those of the people in other states. Therefore, we feel that we should repeat the familiar, but often unheeded warning--"If you're going to drive . . . don't drink. If you're going to drink .. . don't drive!"
