Illinois Education Association How Can I ? I SWAPPED FOR IT THROUGH THE, WANT ADS by Anne Ashley Q. How can I prevent leather upholstery from drying out and cracking? A. Rub it occasionally (once or twice a year) with caster oil, neat'sfoot oil, or a good commercial leather conditioner. On light-colored leathers, use a white conditioner or white petroleum jelly, since most oils tend to darken leather. After rubbing the oil well in with your fingertips, wipe off every trace with a soft cloth. If using neat's-foot oil remember that, while it is an excellent leather conditioner, it leaves a dull, rather than glossy, finish. Q. How can I improvise an ink blotter when the real thing is not at hand? * A. Reach ihto your box of facial cleaning tissues. The loosely-packed' fibers of these tissues absorb ink even faster than some'blotters. Q. How can I improvise some coconut when I have run out of the real thing? A. Grated raw potato makes a good substitute coconut. , Q. What can I do about some of my stairs which have developed annoying squeaks? A. Try driving pairs of twoinch finishing nails through the tread (top of the step) into the riser (the vertical board between the steps). Angle your nails in each pair slightly toward each other, "V" shaped, so that they will be less likely to pull out. Q. How can I make a good job of cleaning my eyeglasses? A. Most opticians recommend an occasional soap-and-water bath for your glasses to remove the film of oil that gathers from the skin. Rinse, and polish with soft tissues. Q. How can I test bread dough to determine whether or not it has risen sufficiently for baking? A. Press your finger into the dough. If the impression disappears, the bread is ready for baking. If the impression remains, the bread must have more time for rising. Q. What can I do when I happen to mar a finished furniture surface with a hammer? A. Sometimes you can raise the gain of the wood back into place by covering the area with several sheets of damp wrapping paper and pressing over this with a hot iron. This expands the wood fibers. Q. How can I insure the easier peeling of boiled eggs? A. Boil the eggs in salted water, and they will peel quickly and easily. The salt tends to crack the shells and separate them from the eggs with much less effort. Q. How can I clean a white felt hat? A. Coat the hat with a mixture of equal parts of cornmeal, salt, and flour, and let remain overnight. Next morning, brush out thoroughly. Q. They smell so fresh and clean when you hang them to dry outdoors --and won't fall or blow off the line if you put each sweater on two hangers, with the hangers facing in opposite directions. The best way to REMOVE PAINT FROM GLASS is with hot vinegar -- usually much faster than scraping with a razor blade. With all of us wearing lightweight summer clothes and beachwear and going out more, we're going to be watched and looked at more. So HOW WE WALK and stand is important. To stand straighter and look lighter is very easy -- and the way to begin is to just hold your chest up as high as you can. Everything else will fall naturally into place when you "lift" your diaphragm -- your shoulders will relax, back will straighten, stomach will pull in. To show how much more balance you have , shift your weight to the left leg and stretch your right leg out with toe pointed. Rotate your ankle and swing your leg back and forth - - all the while folding your chest high.- Now walk -- your weight's off the feet, the diaphragm carries the load, and you've got a lighter, lovelier step. SCHOOL soon, and you'll have to think of things to keep them from being underfoot. One thing that almost all kids love, especially younger ones, is to color and paint. And a very handy way to let them have fun is to let them paint on that shiny shelf paper that comes in rolls it cuts to any size, rolls out. in big pieces for "masterpieces." Party-up even the most ordinary salad with RAISINBRKAD CROUTONS. Toss cubes of raisinbread in melted garlic butter until well coated. Toast slowly in oven, until dry and crispy. Yummy!
