One district discovered that $18,000 could be raised from the tax. but the recommended alterations were estimated to run about $100,000. With the increasing number of traffic accidents, there's a drive in progress throughout our great country to make all signs alike when meaning the same thing. It's safer that way. But the people who conceived the idea didn't take into account that as long as humans put up these signs, and as long as there are local conditions that can be Corrected with them, there will be a conglomeration of design and wording. For example, not many places have alligator problems, so the sign a few miles north of Flamingo, Fla., in Everglades National Park, is strictly nonstandard. It says, "Alligator Crossing". Or take the signs near Fort Myers, Fla., since thousands of terns nest on the Causeway, the local audubon society has put up signs which read: "Bird Crossing, Slow Down." There are a few places where local officials, perturbed at repeated violations, feel compelled to erect unique signs which no one will find in the standard manual. Take the point near Russell, Kas.. where a county highway intersects a U. S. highway and accidents occurred regularly in spite of a "Slow" sign and "Stop" signs at both sides of the road. So after the "Slow" sign officials posted this concise warning: "Dammit Stop and Look". In Dayton, Ohio, where motorists were nonchalantly buzzing pedestrians at a cross walk, five signs, each a different design and all bearing the words "Cross Walk", were erected along the road. They say motorists seem to have gotten the message. But the sign that had the most startling effect was on the Belt line in North Carolina where motorists were shocked to see a sign taking note of the mental deviations of some drivers. A huge, green and white reflective sign bore the word "Ape" and pointed (he way wi(h a big arrow. Actually the sign was unfinished and by now it probably reads "Apex". LARGE HOLIDAY CROWD A tremendous crowd was in McHenry Sunday night to witness the fire works at the Legion carnival. Traffic throughcut the city was very heavy but through the efficient work of the McHenry police department no accidents occurred within the city. The eight regular police officers were on duty and kept the crowd and the cars well under control. value at low cost-- our Family Life Insurance Plan. Contact me today! RORT. .1. CONWAY *315 \V. Qffer Optional Service "ir i.-i'> JI PKVMCM J • ' il.toii i f. ::AlWa A I AM I "ti.'vi.iMl I Ml --1 w • 1. : :x WW J . . # r l r This map shows the present toll-free calling area and additional toll-free calling area (shaded portion> in which subscribers to "Outer Metropolitan Call-Pak" telephone service will be able to call. The" plan, which lias a number of options, also provides for discounts on calls anywhere in the Chicago Metropolitan Area. One option provides for unlimited calling in the Chicago Met Area for a flat monthly charge. A new optional service, offering wider-range toll-free calling and reduced monthly bills for many customers in McHenry, was proposed July 1 by Illinois Bell Telephone Company in a filing with the Illinois Commerce Commission. With the new service offering, customers here could rea-^ lize substantial savings through elimination of short-haul tollcharges, even though basic monthly charges would be slightly higher than for present services, it was explaned. All existing service offerings would be retained with rates unchanged. The filing, also affecting many customers in 160 other Illinois Bell exchanges, is the seaond step in the company's three-part $6,160,000 state rate reduction program introduced in May. It will make possible annual customer savings of about $2,725,000, a company spokesman said. In McHenry the optional new service offering is similar to the Call-Pak plan now in effect in Chicago and neighboring suburbs. Several classes of Call-Pak service would be offered in a newly - designed \Outer Metropolitan Area" (38 ekchanges in a band extending from about 28 to 40 miles from downtown Chicago). One-party residence subscribers to Call-Pak "Unlimited" could call as often and talk as long as they like to any of the 2,000,000 customers in their 3,000 square-mile calling area, which includes Chicago. The flat monthly charge of $27.50 or $30 would be dependent on the location of the Individual exchange. Other economical Call-Pak services would provide, for a flat monthly charge, expanded .toll-free, local calling areas with volume discount packages of 300, 150 or 50 call units. These units would be applicable to calls to other communities within the outer metropolitan calling area, including Chicago. Additional units beyond the monthly package would be at a discounted rate. They give a nickel's Worth of service for less than a nickel. The expanded toll-free local calling area for McHenry customers with these Call-Pak services would include such towns as Algonquin, Antioch, Crystal Lake, Fox Lake, Grayslake, Hebron, Richmond, Wauoonda, Wonder Lake and Woodstock. One-party business customers in this area also could have a new monthly service with expanded toll-free local calling areas. Call unit charges for other calls within the outer metropolitan calling area would be at a discounted rate. _ Here are other changes proposed by Illinois Bell: In the 122 Illinois Bell communities beyond the outer metropolitan area, an optional "Unlimited 25" service would be available to one-party business and residence subscribers. This would provide unlimited, toll-free calling to any Illinois community within 25-mile radius of the customer's home community for a fixed monthly charge. Detailed information on all of the propised services is being forwarded to customers in affected areas with their bills this month, the company spokesman said. "The new service offerings are scheduled to be effective August 1". Downward revisions of rates for within-state long distance calling went into effect on June 19, and are expected to save users nearly $2,000,000 annually. A third Illinois Bell rate proposal,, affecting some business and "rural area services, will be submitted to the commission later this year. • ONLY 9 DAYS LEFT... m TO ENTER THE FABULOUS ... • GUITAR MARATHON • At Shay's Music World 1220 N.
