SHOP IN McHENRY DEDICATION OF LOG CABIN AT FAIR POSTPONED The McHenry County Historical Society regrets that the dedication of the log cabin cannot take place on opening day of the County Fair as planned. Due to unforseen circumstances such as the early freeze last fall and the late frost in the ground this spring, the slab could not be laid until much later tharf planned. Issuance of state permits and inspectors okay were delayed due to pressure of work and- the owner ,of the farm on. which the cabin stands had previously' committed to rental the pasture where the cabin is located. Fences will have to be cut. when the cabin is moved and danger of the cattle getting out cannot be risked. The moving has been postponed until Oct. 1. Invitations had already been issued to all supervisors and assistant supervisors and to all mayors and village presidents. The society has just been given a farm wagon, corn shelter and other items by Mrs. Elizabeth Burgett of Hebron, and is trying to get them picked up in time to display them at the site of the cabin on the fair grounds. Several people have expressed interest in the historical society but said they had never been asked to join. There never has been a membership drive, only through publicity has the society asked anyone interested in preserving the items and history of "the early days, to become a member. Anyone may do so by sending in a membership for the following classifications: $1 or $5 for individual membership; $5 for organizations; $15 for businesses and $100 for life membership to be made in one payment. All other memberships are on a yearly basis. PRELIMINARY JUDGING FOR COUNTY QUEENS Blondes and brownettes -- but no redheads -- paraded before the four judges in preliminary competition of the Miss McHenry County contest last week. But no judgments were announced. In fact, the judges jotted many notes, observed the candidates as they appeared in formals and swim suits, and visited with them before the program began. They also added one unscheduled feature to the program which they said afterwards proved "very helpful." They asked to interview each of the girls formally for about five minutes each. Judges will return Aug. 5 when the finals are held before the McHenry County Fair grandstand audience. The Miss McHenry County contest is the opening night grandstand feature and will include twelve young women from a dozen county cities. The judges are Betty Lou Taylor, Patricia Stevens, Inc.; Karl Edmon, WKRS program director; George Menard, WBBM-TV farm director; and Joe Baisch, general manager and executive vice-president, W REX-TV. Meanwhile the candidates are making radio and TV appearances and posing for photos, all in the interest of calling attention to the outstanding fair which begins Aug. 5 at the Woodstock fairgrounds. Local candidates are Patti Gray of McHenry, sponsored by VFW Post and auxiliary, and Ronee Sommers of Wonder Lake, sponsored by the fire department of that community.
