Farmers in areas of heavy corn rootworm larval infestation, especially where these underground feeders are developing resioance to certain soil insecticides, are urged to keep a close "watch for the first signs of rootworm beetles in corn silks. Because the corn rootworms are developing resistance to some of the older soil insecticices that have controlled them in the past, more adults -- or beetles -- are emerging to feed on and damage silks in the developing ears later in the season. In badly infested areas of the corn belt, farmers stand a good chance of raising nothing more than "a field full of cobs" if they do not watch their fields during July and examine ears closely for beetle infestations. One farmer said that most corn growers had been getting along fine for the past six years in controlling soil insects, but then suddenly they found trouble in irrigated corn. Last summer was the first time many had sprayed for rootworm beetle control. Some farmers found quite a number of unfilled ears in their Untreated fields. They consider six or more beetles per ear a damaging number. Heavy infestation areas where resistance to soil insecticides occurs include western Iowa, moat of Nebraska, northern Kan- WESTERN NORTHERN SOUTHERN saa and Missouri and southern Minnesota and South Dakota. When farmers find several beetles per tip, an aerial spray of an effective pesticide is recommended. Growers report a single application of the powerful, but relatively safe new-type carbamate material, called Sevin carbaryl insecticide, gives excellent, long-lasting control of the corn rootworm beetles. Midwestern corn growers will want to be on the lookout for the many beetles that are expected to emerge this season, and be ready to control them when they appear. F.N.S. In her recollections. Franroise Gilot describes the oxhuberant, if oxhausting \vnrld thoy know together, a world lit by Picasso's genius, throalened by his moods, and made glowingly alivc in Ihis book. She throws light on his aostholie philosophy, his views of other artists, and his magnificent inventiveness, not only in painting, but in sculpture, etching, lithography, and pottery. Best of .all, here is Picasso the man, the husband, the father, sometimes savage sometimes gent'le, given to sudden rages and childish superstitions, struggling through fits of depression or exulting creative fervor. And here too are perceptive portraits of the people, great and humble, who moved through his life. Recreating the extraordinary adventure of her ten years with Picasso, Francoise Gilot has given us a candid, humorous and intelligent memoir. For the first time Picasso emerges from behind the screen of myth, legend and world adulation that has all but obscured him as a living man. "LORD HAW-HAW & WILLIAM JOYCE", by J. A. Cole William Joyce, to whose Nazi broadcasts all England listened with mesmerized attention (because of the few true incidents he always included!, was oqe of the most hated men of World War II Lord Haw-Haw and William Joyce is both a fascinating story and an objective, and often enlertaining, contribution to the history of the war. Based -largely on hitherto inaccessible material, this is the definitive and only authoritative work on William Joyce. It reveals that he was born in New York, explains why he went, to Germany and, what he did with his -much discussed passport. It also shows how he lived and worker! in Berlin and how he came to'be in that Flensburg wood where he was •captured. Ill a series of letters, the story rises to an emotional peak with Joyce's own account of his months' in prison, his appearance in the House of the Lords for his appeal, and his I hi:lights while being sentenced to death as a traitor. The career of Joyce from childhood to h'liiidng provides a highly dramatic narrative. The full slory makes Lord Ilaw- Haw and William Joyce a document of historical importance.
