Of added interest at this year undergraduate programs point is the fact that these is well as graduate work and branches combine highest colprofessional courses, as in such states as California, Illinois and New York, and others. <• In addition, and more widely fpread, state universities are providing systems of luliy students. legiate standards with sensitivity to local needs. And of equal significance, this expansion of educational facilities means savings for and Puerto Rico are currently operating more than 260 degree- offering branches according to the Office of Institutional Research of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges. In addition to the four year branches, there are three other types r • 127 two year campuses offering the first year or two of regular four year bachelor programs* • 37 technical institutes offering terminal two year programa that usually give stu« dents an ussociate degree. • 113 extension centers giv- . ing degrees credit, mostly for part time students and many who are older than usual col* lege students* The technical institutes are currently reported to be more able to absorb more students than the liberal arts colleges, which seems to be all to the good for the time being since the demand for those technically trained continues to exceed the supply. Bigger Need For Care Of Eyes Is Seen With the increasing use of audio-visual aids in classrooms, today's schoolwork makes big demands on eyesight. Add to that the mounting pressures of homework, with a corresponding increase In the amount of "close seeing" a student is required to •do, and it's easy to see that •the need for intelligent eye care Is more Important than .ever. : A professional eye check-up ts a traditional part of the 'back to school picture. Proper lighting in the home study area is another need of which most parents are aware. There are, however, other fiteps parents can take to be sure their children's vision is protected. Many of them are (simple steps -- as simple as blinking the eyes. An occasional pause for a few eye blinks is just what experts recommend as one way to guard against eye fatigue! It's an eye-care habit parents might practice, too. In equipping and lighting the home study area, parents should also give thought to the over-all surroundings. The room used for home study should be decorated in light colors to reflect illumination. In addition to the study lights, other lights in the room should be turned on, to prevent harsh shadows or high brightness differences. Surface of the study desk or table should be light to medium color, again to eliminate Sharp contrasts with the lighted books or papers. . The student's eye level Should be at least 14 inches above the top of the desk, for comfortable seeing. During Study periods, short breaks of ft few seconds to rest the eyes are advisable. Encourage the child to form the habit of jpausing occasionally to raise £ils eyes and focus them on jflistant objects. j A tackboard above the desk {provides a good resting place JFor the pyes and also is a jconveniom. location for memos fcnd illustrated data. - Use of eye drops such as iMurine, from ? nandy squeeze fcotWe., can sooihe and refresh.
