Thursday, September 16, 1965 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section Two -- Page Thro# TWICE TOLD TALES FORTY TEARS AGO (Taken from the files of September 19, 1925) Mrs. Lorena E. Colby Flanders passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 1. She had lived in this vicinity all her life. The Sunshine Cottage located on the east side of Pistakee Bay was burned to the ground Monday evening about 10 o'clock. The McHenry fire department was called at that hour, but was unable to save the cottage. The boys immediately turned their attention to keeping the surroundinging houses from damage and were very successful in their attempt. Another sale of ground along the Chicago & North Western tracks in West McHenry was made Tuesday by C. W. Stenger, local banker and realtor, to the McHenry Sash and Door Co. The McHenry homecoming and Labor Day celebration was a grand success. Approximately $2,500 will be the net proceeds. The net proceeds from the celebration will be turned over to the committee handling the funds to be used for purchasing ornamental street lights for the business district. The grand prize, a Ford tudor sedan, was secured by Fred Kuntz of McHenry. Mr. and Mrs. William J. Meyers and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mathieu of Johnsburg motored to Poygan Lake, Tustin, Wis., and passed the holidays on a fishing trip. On their return they reported that they had caught a catfish weighing thirty pounds and to confirm the tale, the fish was on exhibition at the Meyers home, where many people came to see it. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of September 5, 1940) The strong Sycamore nine won the Illinois state amateur title on the McHenry diamond on Labor Day, beating Algonquin 1 to 0 and moving on to the national tournament at Birmingham, Ala. In winning the state title, the Sycamore team was presented with the Gabby Harnett trophy. Sixty volunteer women workers for Willkie were present last Thursday evening in the old telephone building on Green street, McHenry. The turn-out was remarkable since this was the first meeting of this kind to be held in McHenry. Clarence Anderson, who has been affiliated with a baseball team at Statesville, N. C., for the past season, returned to his home in West McHenry Monday evening, where he will remain until next spring. Norma and Marjorie Whiting, Mildred Kinsala and Bertha Schiessle spent Labor Day weekend in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minn. Daniel Jus ten and Arthur Smith left Sunday noon on a motor trip to the Black Hills, S. D., and other places of interest in the West. They expect to be away about two weeks. Miss Verona Diedrich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Diedrich of Ingleside, became the bride of Mr. Alfred May, tson of the Peter Mays of Spring Grove, at St. Peter's church, Volo, Wednesday morning, Aug. 2. New glory is brought to the Pine Tree Farm stables at McHenry by a four-year-old dark grey mare named Miss Horticultural, which has just been named grand champion Percheron mare at the National Percheron show held this week at the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul. Mr. and Mrs. Joe May and little daughter recently occupied their new home on John street. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of September 8, 1955) Miss S h i rl e y Wegener, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wegener of McHenry, became the bride of Mr. William J. Karls, son of Mr. gnd Mrs. Leo Karls of Richmond, at a simple but lovely wedSing service performed Sept. 3 in the rectory of St. Mary's Catholic church. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Elshoff are the parents of a daughter, born Sept. 2 at Memorial hospital. Sunday, Sept. 4, at the McHenry F.F.A. chapter promoted a father-son picnic on the school grounds. In this way the freshmen agriculture boys and their fathers had an opportunity to meet the other F.F.A. members. The father and son teams were signed to play in a horseshoe tournament and also in a softball game. Rev. Fr. John J. McGowan was presented with a citizenship inedal by Commander Roy Morrison of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The award recognized the popular priest for his outstanding service to youth of the community in sports and other activities. He was also presented with a lifetime membership in the local V.F.W. post. A record number of students reported for classes at the local high school this week and they were greeted by the 'arrest faculty ever employed. Among the twenty-nine teachers are eight new members, a number which comprised the entire teaching staff a quarter of a century ago. Rub soap on a small brush and .brush sides of shields. Rinse in clear lukewarm water. MORE ABOUT CLOTHES: Those 'temporary shape (or shape-less) problems happen to all growing girls. If your daughter is a little slim or a little plump, choose the styling of her clothes to "cover up" her shape -- without looking as if you were trying to hide anything. Stay away .from traditional dresses with fitted waists and full skirts --they just accentuate whatever's wrong. Rather, try jumpers and the new flared and A-line designs. Look for overblouse and princess styles, mix-or-match separates. With separates, you can fit your daughter perfectly top and bottom, even if she's 2 different sizes. When you want to store clothes, hats, what-have-you, and be sure they'll stay clean, put them in SEALED PLASTIC BAGS. Seal the bags securely by folding aluminum foil along the top edges, then running a hot iron over the aluminum. The foil prevents the plastic from melting on your iron. Let bag cool before removing foil. HOW MANY TIMES HAS THIS HAPPENED DEPARTMENT: Stamps that are stuck together can be "unstuck" if you pust them in your freezer. In an hour or so they'll separate, with glue intact. Since most people are on some kind of diet these days, the party-giving hostess should be thoughtful of her guests and the food she serves them. I'll be giving you hints from time to time -- starting today where many parties start: TASTY TIDBITS for appetizers, cocktail parties, etc. When you make appetizers or canapes, cut the things that add calories, not the foods that add flavor. (With so many dietary foods today, your job is practically a snap!) Take tiny stalks of celery hearts and fill them with chive cottage cheese. Make small rolls of chipped beef and fill with farmer's cheese that you've "spiked" with a little mustard. Curry shrimp is a yummy delight; boil frozen shrimp with curry powder, grated onion, lemon juice and black pepper, then chill and serve on toothpicks. If you want to be really fancy, combine diet mayonnaise with anchovy paste to make anchovy dip (great for crackers, potato chips, celery). (Watch for Maggie every week)! Ray Page Ray Page, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, this week issued a bulletin advising school administrators in the state to comply with the regulations established for use of school busses. The bulletin was issued as the result of a recent accident involving a school bus which was being operated illegally in transporting children to a summer swimming program. A child visiting in the district was killed. Superintendent Page has placed the school district on a tentative nonrecognition status. Page said that failure to comply with the Illinois School Code on the operation of school buses will result in loss of recognition and state aid. School boards may not operate school buses except in connection with the regular school program when school is in session, and the board has no authority to lend or hire out its school bus to any organization or individual for any purpose. The bulletin further points out that school buses may be used only for transportation of pupils to and from school; transportation of pupils to and from school sponsored activities in which pupils of the district participate (with a charge being made) and for school sponsored field trips in which actual class time work is being carried on. Emergency legislation to include transportation of pupils by school buses to school sponsored activities? was enacted by the recent General Assembly at the urging of Superintendent Page. Page urged the legislation as a safety precaution by eliminating the use of many automobiles used by students to travel to and from games. Previously there was no stipulation for this purpose. In addition to loss of recognition and state aid, the bulletin indicates that school districts may be liable for damages and individual school board members may be personally liable. School disricts will be required to have attached to its claim for transportation for reimbursement, an affidavit signed by the school administrator and the president or secretary of the school board that school buses have been operated according to the law. The main purpose of the meeting will be to provide a briefing and source of information f&r all officials prior to the time when they must begin the extension and collection of taxes within their jurisdiction. At the meeting, questions will be asked pertaining to state and local property tax changes made by the 1965 General Assembly, and the panel members will do the answering and interpreting. The questions will pertain to tax changes involving the' state, county, city or village, township and other local governments. This is the ninth biennial meeting conducted by the Federation for such purposes.
