Page Tells Aims And Responsibility Of Education The obvious enthusiasm and interest of the crowd at McHenry Country club the twenty - first of September led one person to remark that the Republican theme for '66 will be "We ain't down yet!" The McHenry Township Republican Women's club sponsored a buffet dinner for guest speaker, Ray Page, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Seated at the speaker's table were Mrs. Tom Davis, president; Mr. Page, J. Ralph Peak, Mrs. J.R. Levesque, Mrs. Henry Nell, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Tazwell, Mrs. Helen Haynes and Mrs. Connie Johnson. Robert D. Stuart, Jr., Republican National Committeeman for Illinois, sent a wire of congratulations to the club; Mr. Peak, (Scott county chairman) represented his wife, who was ill, the National Committeewoman for Illinois. Mrs. Levesque "stood ..in" for McHenry county chairman, "Jake", recovering from surgery. Announcement was made of the appointment of Mrs. Henry Nell as McHenry county chairwoman. She has long been active in Republican affairs, and is precinct committeewoman in McHenry Township Precinct 4. Mr. Page discussed education and the major role it has assumed in the past few years. Where once education ranked eighth in importance in the eyes of the public, today, it has risen to frist. Educate on Communism Among the responsibilities of education is the duty to inform future citizens about the many laces of communism. In an effort toward achievement of this goal, the office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction under the direction of Ray Page has compiled a manual on the teaching of totalitarian communism. It has been made available to educators in Illinois, as well as throughout the nation. It presents guidelines, suggestions and a bibliography for teachers. Mr. Page emphasized that we can remain ostriches no longer It is imperative to the survival of freedom that our young people receive an accurate and comprehensive education in the area of communism. He also stressed the necessity for our children, of a thorough and complete understanding of our constitutional republic and free enterprise system. He charged the national administration for its invasion of private and state affairs. Should any doubt federal funds include federal control, Mr. Page cited several examples. The creation of a federal teacher's corps, with salaries emanating from Washington, would logically feel no responsiiblity to local school administration. Many states now allow and urge their teachers to become involved in political activity. He hopes Illinois will follow this trend.
